How do the police end up catching ppl who point lasers at planes and helicopters?

like say if someone pointed a laser for a couple of seconds here and there at an aircraft how do the cops end up knowing where it came from with such accuracy just from a few seconds of lasers?
>>
>>54204547
How do they catch someone who interferes with a million dollar aircraft?

I'll put it in simple terms so you can research it, high-end cameras. Federal law enforcement spends good money to figure it out.

I don't want to give specifics because miscreants. I know it's not a hyper-useful answer but there are kids with issues on this board that do not need to get ideas.
>>
I also want to point out before this discussion continues that even sarcastically encouraging this behavior is a federal crime.
>>
>>54204713

No, it's not.
>>

This. The concept is simple though like in warfare. If you fire your rifle, rocket launcher, tank, etc. from a hiding spot, you just gave away your position to the enemy also.
>>
>>54204713

oh you
>>
>>54204547

THIS IS ALL HYPOTHETICAL!

Because people who do it are usually chavs who hang out in local park/estate

Also its usually done at night and areas around airport are sparsely populated, police or airport security just drive there and wait for idiots to show up on main road. Or they just surround them.

If you are smart, get a map, look for areas at the end of each runway where there multiple escape routes. Get a scope so you can aim laser accurately. Also keep in mind that once reported on the radio security can get to you in 5 minutes, so dont linger.

Best thing is get a radio/transmitter capable of airport frequencies so (hypothetically) you can jam the frequency it while shining the laser.
>>
>>54204925
Kinda stupid to do anyways, what is the point?
>>
>>54204996
There is no point. Dont do it. But the knowledge of how to do it may be imteresting

>>

Because those produce heat that can be easily detected with thermal images. I doubt tiny handheld lasers produce much heat, not to mention those used for covert military purposes.
>>

IR cameras. All the police helicopters have them, and there's always one around in the bigger cities.

The problem is that the small point becomes a big area over a large distance. Your laser pointer is not accurate enough to keep it all focused in one point. So if you point it at an airplane, the likeliness of blinding someone is a lot higher than you think.

>>
Bird hits are more dangerous than drones. Most drones capable of getting that high are quite expensive and not too many 'teens' can afford them. Usually those flying the heavier more expensive drones have some experience with flying the cheaper type first before laying down serious cash. I am not saying there are not a few idiots with money to burn but I think this is over inflated.

>>54206097
I don't think that drone danger to airplanes is how they keep people in-line.

Drones are still primarily a hobby, good luck forcing ANYONE to register ANYTHING they build themselves.

Also all you have to do in order to stay off the registry is run a light drone without a heavy camera. It's done to prevent long-range low-altitude telephoto snooping. Do you even drone, asshole?
>>
The solution is just in defining no-fly-zone areas close to every airport.

This is a good point, actually. I'm coming around more to your side. I still have a feeling, an ethos more towards that a pointer seems ultimately cheaper, I'm a drone hobbyist though, and I know empirically that drones can be made cheaply/with basically any materials.

We actually buy $40 flight controllers, mount RadioShack brushless motors to formed plywood, and do speedflying with these <$100 usd drones, but you just can't buy anything like that in a store.

I hope you see why I'm on the fence here, I'm not expressing it well, I think.

Drones can fly themselves via GPS. (If you're a retard, that means you don't have to stay in radio TX/RX range.)

You're thinking about quadcopters, maybe. RC planes in 1990 did not fly or stabilize themselves, and without hundreds of dollars worth of equipment, you couldn't fly them if you couldn't see them.

No rude, that's just the answer to your "question", if anyone could call it that.

No.

Drones can be UAS airplanes.

MultiROTORS are self-stabilizing aircraft with three or more vertical-lift rotors. Not necessarily unmanned.

Example 1: DJI Phantom is a multirotor, a quadcopter, and a drone.

Example 2: Parrot DISCO is a drone and a lifting body.

Example 3: Syma X8 is a multirotor and a quadcopter, but not a drone.

Glad we got this cleared up.

Hazard is that flaring part of descent/landing is not done by autopilot. There is a period of time where pilot takes over. Suddenly flashing a 1500mw laser into the cockpit can blind him(or even both pilots) and make him lose control, make a sudden manouvre which can make the plane crash. Its more dangerous with smaller planes because these dont have an autopilot.

I have a friend who publishes detailed papers on penetration testing, and all forms of cyber crimes. They're not going to up and arrest him simply because he was writing about practices that cyber criminals can use. But now we know how to detect those cyber criminals, because we know what signs to look for, thanks to his papers

>>

It will create confusion (while shining laser at the same time). Jam tower, maybe approach, 121.5 to really make them mad.
Airport use mhz range just above fm radio, hand held transmitter can be legally purchased or even made at home with some technical knowledge
>>
>>54207097
Do you have any idea how radio jamming works, you fucking retard? The jammer needs to have more power than the transmitter, and I'll give you a hint: ATC radio transmitters have enough power to be heard literally hundreds of miles away. You'll only be able to jam any aircraft that literally crash into you, but maybe that's your goal you dumb motherfuker.
>>
>>54206871
What do you mean?
It's obviously so strong that the air it shines through becomes a plasma and diffuses the light so that you can see the actual beam.
>>
>>54207075
Those equipped with GPS won't even takeoff if they are in a no-flyzone area
>>
>>54204547
The ancient egyptians used elaborate set ups of mirrors to redirect light. All you have to do is reroute your lazer through an overseas vpn to avoid detection by the Canadian Revenue Agency.
>>
>>54207233
i gotta say i kek'd
>>
>>54206975
>You think "jamming" one frequency is going to do anything?

Each airport only uses a couple of frequencies.
This way everyone on the air/ground listens to everybody else on the air/ground.

So yeah, jamming those frequencies would be bad.
Don't be a nigger.
>>
>>54207173
Dont need to be rude.
ATC may have power to reach aircraft hundred miles away but aircraft do not, interfere with aircraft signal and it will be garbled. We are not trying to jam tower but aircraft from sending and receiving, also timing is critical if they dont expect it, it will take them time to change frequency etc
>>
>>54207173
He's talking about approach and ground.

Those are local radio frequencies used on and around the airport, during takeoff/landing and taxiing, not ATC which is used during normal flight.
>>
>>54207314
Just a couple....

>>
>>54207314
You're missing the point, even if you have the jammer set up, it's range would be, like, five feet, being generous. You'll have something that can fit in your trunk, not a fucking EA-18G you retarded skid.

Forward looking infrared (FLIR) cameras, typically used on military and civilian aircraft, use a thermographic camera that senses infrared radiation.[1]

The sensors installed in forward-looking infrared cameras—as well as those of other thermal imaging cameras—use detection of infrared radiation, typically emitted from a heat source (thermal radiation), to create a "picture" assembled for video output.

I can understand passengers being uneasy about flying in unmanned planes but cargo flights should be automated first.

Assuming you have lifesupport for passenjers anyway and you don't plan on going beyond 12g force on your airbus there's little to gain from it. the real deal will be unmanned fighter.

But yeah if you remove all life support and shit from cargo aircraft, you won't even need to make it airtight and you can squeeze a lot more luggage in and you will save money on fuel that's wasted to powering lifesupport and you save on pilot's wages.

>>54210610
If you want to set stuff on fire, you need a lot of power, not a high energy. So for most kiddies playing around with lasers it's not the color that matters, it's the amount of mW, which is unrelated to the wavelength.
>>
>>54204547
>How do the police end up catching ppl who point lasers at planes and helicopters?
>Planes
They don't unless they do it for long enough to get a chopper in the air to find them or the pilot can explain where the laser is coming from
>Helicopter
The pilot reports it and just circles describing the location of the laser

This only works if you're a chav and shine lasers at aircraft from your house for a long period of time. If you were to walk outside and blip your laser at a plane for a second then walk back inside there is 0 chance you are caught unless the plane was autonomously photographing the area and caught you doing it
>>
>pointing laser at airplanes
How the fuck do you do that? The plane is like thousands of feet above you and in constant move, how can you even manage to point the laser at it?

landing/takeoff. it mostly happens in urban areas near airports, more of an issue for helicopter pilots honestly, airplane pilots just like to bitch and moan because everyone (falsely) think they are some kind of god.

Autopilot just makes it so that the pilots job isnt suicidally boring, constantly adjusting the trim and throttle to get a constant speed and altitude. It takes a shitload of knowledge and experience to operate an aircraft like that. The autopilot's not gonna do shit in a 30kt crosswind or if theres a serious mechanical failure.

>"The autopilot's not gonna do shit in a 30kt crosswind or if theres a serious mechanical failure."
>name two conditions where auto pilots can do better than humans

The Soviet shuttle successfully aborted a landing and came back around due to a crosswind.

Military fighter fly-by-wire systems are designed to stabilize the aircraft and make it flyable after severe damage/mechanical failure. I think some of them can enable the pilot to continue to fly after the loss of entire control surfaces.

Note I say "enable the pilot." The human still controls gross movement, but without the computer the human could not keep control of the damaged aircraft and would go down.
