AMD rises again edition.

This thread was created to prevent anons from spamming new threads, for technology questions they have.
If you are that person, post your simple/small/stupid questions here

Don't bump. This is a slow board, and will continue to be. Wait for an answer or google it.

If you see other anons posting questions outside this thread, ignore or redirect them here
Use >>>/g/sqt as a link to find the sqt thread
>>
Old thread was looking pretty plump.

my question is: what do you call those websites that are usually mistypings of more common websites and just have a bunch of links to items semi-related to what their domain name implies they're about? do they actually make any money? I don't think I've ever clicked a link from a page such as that

Got this bit of code in Android Studio to play an audio file when a button is pressed

public void onClick(View v) {
MediaPlayer mp = MediaPlayer.create(MyActivity.this, R.raw.audiofile;
if(!mp.isPlaying())
{
mp.start();
}
else
{
mp.reset();
}

It works, but how do I make it so that only one instance of it can be playing? As it is I can mash that button and it keeps starting without stopping any of the previous ones

Google gives you 15, M$ gives you 30, DB gives you 2 gbs.

Its fucking free.

That's usually domain parking. You buy the domain for cheap to sell it later. And that's the page they put on it until that happens.

the likelihood of you getting caught is like j-walking. You gotta do it in front of a cop.

Just don't download anything NOT on DVD. If it's circulating in the stores, than it's on basically every place like Hulu, amazon, google play and so on. Just don't seed too long. A 1:1 ratio is all you should need to do so you don't feel like an asshole

But the reason I'm asking is because I can't get a torrent to start. It remains at zero seeders/peers. Specifically, it's the Gentooman Library torrent here: https://g.sicp.me/books/

I reinstalled Windows 10 (64) and my keyboard randomly stopped working. I tried to fix it in Device Manager but it tells me the drivers are up to date. It offers to try to fix it by reinstalling the driver and tells me to restart, but I've done that 5 times now and it hasn't helped. Some usb devices like my mouse or Xbox One controller work no problem, but my keyboard and also my DS4 controller don't work anymore.

Would you mind reinstalling Windows 7? Images are available that have SP1 already in them. For example:

You will end up with an ISO file for Windows 7 with SP1. Burn it to a DVD, or use Rufus to create a bootable USB drive.

Boot off of the DVD or USB and you'll get to the Windows 7 installer. Make sure to delete all hard drive partitions you see when you get to that part.

You will lose all of your data by doing this! You might want to get a copy of your network driver installers to use after getting Windows reinstalled.

the best place to find downloads of untouched ms iso's is the mydigitallife forum, though you do have to sign up and hit thanks to view links, that way they have a method of correlating reports/dcma takedowns against people who knew about the link. which I think is reasonable

Again, be aware you will be erasing your hard drive and losing everything. Get a copy of your network driver beforehand so you can install it after getting Windows 7 reinstalled.

What was the name of the software that changed the win7 taskbar context menu to look more like it did in XP (layout, not color), and to appear exactly where you right click?

I think it also did other stuff, like reduce the height of the taskbar so the start menu circle thing was sticking up a bit above it.

It may have also changed the way you select files in list view in a folder, making the bar that covers the name and all the other data only cover the name.

If I'm not mistaken, it also removed the convenient "XGB of YGB" hard drive space visuals.

I don't think it's the built-in "Personalize->Windows Classic" option, because the color and start menu button and all that looked the same as in standard win7.

I'll see if I can find a screenshot, but I don't think I have any.

You shouldn't replace the LCD. You could damage the laptop even more. Just pay someone to do this. But take into account if the cost of the screen isn't too high, because maybe it's better to buy another laptop, specially if it's not very powerful and has many years of use.

AND STOP USING SOMEONE'S THINGS WITHOUT PERMISSION, YOU FAGGOT

Here's a pretty weird one.

I have an audio file I want to transcribe. Google docs lets me do it pretty shittily, but it works.
The only problem is that if I want to direct the file to it with pulseaudio, I can't, since it deactivates as soon as it loses focus and the recording spot in pavucontrol disappears. I don't think this is too fixable.

Is there any half decent audio transcribing software out there?
>>
>>54192517
Yeah, but he will be more pleased to have a new laptop than having a more fucked laptop. As I said, you couldn't replace the screen without making more damage. Opening portable computers is terrible, they are not built for this purpose. They are built to be compact, only.

If i have only one harddrive but i make a 5gig partition. Can i install windows to the main partition using the 5gig partition as the installer? can i make a partition bootable?
>>
Oh dear god what fresh hell is this?

I just switched out some old hardware, installed a new OS (well, windows 7), and set about tweaking everything.

After installing like six different drivers and some useful programs, I decided to reboot. Cue the "windows failed to reboot, trying to repair..." screen. It finishes, and I pray to Gates that it'll work.

It starts up properly, and I start hoping that I might get some sleep and keep my blood pressure down. Nope! Turns out all my shortcuts and newly added .exe's (no matter where they were located) are gone. Just gone. It's eerie, looking at a programs install folder with all the .dll's and .ini's and everything else, but no .exe to actually run it. I was lucky I still had the LAN drivers on a USB stick.

What could have caused it? I know that windows can sometimes reverse registry changes and settings and such while trying to recover, but actually deleting executables? The .txt's and .jpg's I had on the desktop are still there, it's just the executables and shortcuts that are gone.

It's a SyncMaster 633NW, when I connected it to power it just stayed with a blank screen for half an hour no matter what I did but now it's working and Windows 10 won't detect it as a new monitor or something to give it the proper wide resolutions (I was using CRT).

I'd like advice. My current PC I bought for $500 off craigslist and it came with a monitor and other shit.

My question is, how much would it cost to upgrade this thing to be able to handle Far Cry primal at max settings, close to 60 fps?

It currently does most of what i want, but it struggles to play Arma 3 with decent frames. Please give me advice.

And yes, I have tried doing my own research, but there are so many options, I don't want to end up spending too much
>>
>>54193711
games are taking way too much space these days to not put them mostly on mechanical.

I just turn mine off when i'm not using it because laptop, and you have your OS on an SSD, so it hurts a lot less.
>>
>>54193746
No, his son did and he took the rap to cover for him.
>>
>>54193761
You could always abuse symlinks and move them on/off your SSD as needed. It's not hard to keep a handful of the games you're playing at any given time on the SSD while keeping the bulk of them on the HDD.

Of course, only some games actually will even benefit from being on the SSD so it's not like you'd even need to bother most of the time.

How about I put "real" games on the HDD and VNs on the SSD? Although from what I checked even VNs are getting bigger and bigger these days. Felt like yesterday when they were hardly bigger then a single gig.
>>
>>54193895
Well, I think for most VNs it won't make much of a difference unless they're actually performing badly due to your HDD's bottleneck or something, which should not be an issue with an internal drive really. You're better off putting stuff with long loading times on the SSD since that will see the most benefit. VNs don't tend to make you sit around waiting for stuff to load.

I do it, on the theory that it will help Steam start up a little bit faster and since Steam is rather small. You just need to configure Steam to set up a new library on your other hard drive and use it as your default install location.

The price difference between the 550w and 650w is negligible, 4 usd (I know I said I was trying to build one as cheap as possible, but if there's anything I know about electronics, it's that extra wiggle room in your PSU won't hurt).

Will a 1000w power supply use more power than a 500w power supply, assuming similar efficiency and the same components connected to both?
>>
>>54194380
They will use the same assuming the same components
Power is not used up unless it is used up except to wire resistance which is negligible, excess power in an underefficient, high-powered system will remain in the lines
Basically if you have 500W worth of stuff in your rig it will only use up 500W even if your power supply is 1000W
>>
>>54194482
and then, PSUs are most efficient at the 50% range, so the 1000W one will use less power.

You can spend as much as you want on the PSU. you don't have to worry about having too much.
>>
>>54194482
>>54194520
Oh ok that's good to know. I got a 750W PSU back in the day and always worried that my PC was wasting power.
>>
>>54194380
correct me if im wrong
but it depends on the efficienncy rating
lets say you are using 500w that has 80% rating
if your computer uses 100w in idle it will still get the 200w minimum wasting 100w
so if you have a 1000w that has 90% rating and you use 100w in idle so its still in the minimum 100w.
yea thats that

Hey guys, I just built a new PC, it has a 650W powersupply, along with:

Gigabyte LGA2011-3 Intel X99 SLI ATX DDR4 3000 Motherboard GA-X99-SLI

and an intel i7-5930k

I threw it all together, plugged it in, and everything powered up for ~3 seconds, then dies back down, then turns on again, it cycles like this (longest ~4 cycles) until I flick the power button on the PSU. I started unplugging everything until all that remained on the mobo was the big power block, the CPU power, cpu fan power, and a power switch, this same cycle continued. I grabbed the PSU out of my old pc, hooked it up and got the same results...

What's fucked /g/?

Should you always try to get a power supply rated for how much your system will actually use?

Not to save money, but because it is better for the system and PSU itself

Apparently the system I am building only needs about 550-650 but the first platinum corsair model is for 750, which I want

Don't really care about the money because the difference between psu models is pretty small but I've always wondered whether a whole bunch of power sitting unused is somehow bad for a psu
>>
>>54195449
I would think you would want one a bit higher than you're going to use. You don't want to force your power supply to operate at full capacity where it can just barely supply everything with what it needs. That is just asking for disaster.

Is it a 2 in 1 modem /router, or 2 separate units? Is it cutting out at seemingly random times, or during use? Have you tried changing the location, or the coax/whatever you're using to plug the modem in for connectivity?

what phone should i buy? my last phone was the htc hd2, but i'm not looking for a high end model this time around, i'll basically be using it for music, whatsapp and google maps only.

budget is 260€

it needs to support a 64gb microsd card and run android. physical buttons would be preferred.
i'm currently looking at the asus zenfone max, is there anything better than that?

Got a i5 4690K I can only OC to 4.4GHz 1.175V, I need to up the voltage to 1.275 to hit 4.5Ghz and by then I hit 100ºC with a H100i at max speeds.

How angry should I be?

I am currently trying to install Windows XP on my laptop (HP f305dx) but nothing seems to work. I am currently running Linx Mint on my laptop. Whenever I try to boot from the USB, it won't recognize it unless I go into the boot menu and specifically tell it to start boot from the USB. Then, I just get a blinking cursor and nothing happens. If I try from a CD, the BIOS just doesn't even recognize the CD. I can hear it start to spin, but if I make boot from CD the first thing in the boot order, nothing happens, and when I go to the boot menu, it doesn't even show a CD drive (though it will if there is no other CD in the drive). I know it's nothing to do with the ISO or the mediums as they both work on a different computer. The same thing happens even when I try to use ReactOS. It happens with legacy mode enabled and disabled and with secure boot enabled and disabled. Any idea what's going on?

depends on the laptop and the usage profile.
anywhere from 2 to 10 years

>>54197418
Laptops can last you decades if you take care of them. On terms of performance though, probably 4 years, give or take.

windows doesn't do ssh.
enable RDP on your server and connect with a RDP client.
otherwise install a VNC server and connect with a VNC client.

So let's say that I'm doing basic stuff like scrolling through a website with smooth scrolling enabled, or switching desktops or anything that could possibly trigger an animation on the desktop. This applies to Windows 10, linux with KDE or Gnome for instance or anything with Compiz, and Hackintosh. And at random times these animations either skip themselves or stutter, but they never do it consistently.

And when it comes to other things such as watching movies or playing games, shit's as fine as it should be. No stuttering or microstuttering unless I'm playing the latest ubisoft piece of shit.

What exactly could make a GPU behave this way? I have an r9 280x, I thought that while this wouldn't be the best for some of the newest releases, it would be fine with animations on fucking windows 10 or debian with gnome but it's quite the opposite.

Tried googling this but I guess I'm not familiar with the correct terms.

How do I fix "artifacts" (?) in shadows when playing videos? Like when it's dark there are these layers of you can see that should otherwise shouldn't be there.

Pic related. Near the left of pic. Is it the game or my settings? Running a 970 for FFXIV.

Nevertheless, I have a stupid question:
Using Avast free antivirus on win10 x64, have had problems with presumably avast minimizing full screen applications (games etc) randomly but often. I want to try another antivirus. What would be a good one that's mostly hassle-free and not hipster editor's choice?

My computer powered down during an intensive CPU/GPU load twice. There are no crash dumps, there was no BSOD, my temps were all very reasonable, there are no memory problems, I get no GPU artifacts, I have not changed or installed any new drivers.
Is it safe to assume it's the PSU and go ahead an change it? I don't have a spare one to test it and if I'm gonna buy a new one I'll get a decent one so I wanna make sure I didn't overlook any other possibilities before spending the money. Is there a way to test a PSU without a multimeter?
