It's faster to type "word" and hit enter rather than looking up whatever executable name is for ms word.
Even if you did remember the executable name, the search function allows you to find the same program with less keystrokes ("word" is likely shorter than the full executable name).

All the programs i need and use are divided into 2 narrow docks, the file manager has all the relevant partitions and file destinations set up in tabs to open in the order i decided by default.
The rest is just using the search or command prompt.
As far as shutting down/restarting the computer, the keyboard shortcuts are there.

Often I will only just rest one hand at the mouse and then it's easier (and more comfortable) to just click in the bottom left corner and then on the appropriate icon than to put both hands on the keyboard and start typing.
