I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an OS on its own, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell facilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an OS, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete OS. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU OS: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distros are really distros of GNU/Linux.

ubuntu et al is great for newbies who just want to check their email, listen to music etc. way, way better than the newer versions of windows

it's also way better for more experienced computer users who know what they're doing

where it falls down is for that strage kind of 'middle-ground' user, who thinks they know a lot more about computers than they actually do, when really all they know how to do is slot the parts into their gaming rig and update their graphics drivers, the kind of person who says 'i am good with computers' but who can't program or use a CLI, and has used the same operating system for their whole life

What are you using?
Are you using Ubuntu .iso 16.04 lts or some flavor with a different DE?
>>

>windows is laggy, bloated, and is basically 110% government botnet

I tought the bloated laggy part was a meme, until I tested 16.04 out today, absolutely works fucking smooth, same hardware - firefox can handle 50+ like it handled 5 tabs on windows, everything feels smooth as fuck.

TOo bad 16.04 also feels like beta... I'm looking for help what should I do? Use mate 16.04 which had 2 years of development compared to ubuntu 16.04 6 months, or install arch again and keep it minimal? I mean only packages strictly for what I need with update once / week only if newsfeed show no problem with that, this way I'll have little to no problems that can't be fixed in few minutes.

Linux was never meant to be great.

A lot of computer scientists I work with are actually surprised we still haven't evolved past UNIX style systems. In the 70's and 80's they were sure these were going to be obsolete by now.
