I'm about to upgrade from Phenom II X2 and Radeon HD 5770 to Athlon X4 860K and R9 380 (used).
I've never read bad things about AMD, only about Intel and nVidia. Try to convince me why I shouldn't keep buying from team red.

Ever since 2008 I've been buying AMD gpus over and over, for different reasons. I left nvidia back then because I had my bad luck with those. The latest ones though, 6850HD / 280x just make me regret things a lot. And it's mostly drivers and the fact that support on linux ain't so great. The reason I bought the 280x was because I could grab it for cheap where I couldn't grab an equivalent on the nvidia side that was priced the same, but I'm not too happy about it.
Shit when I got it I thought "this should be way more than enough to use any linux desktop environment without lag", how wrong I fucking was. Playing GTA V on decent settings and then find that Cinnamon is sluggish. Come the fuck on.

CPU is kinda meh really but still a far better choice than a fucking pentium. Also, it's on an outdated platform that only uses DDR3 instead of DDR4 which makes it an issue.
GPU is fantastic as long as you get the 4GB model.

That's a fairly solid build, but an FX 6300 would be better. As would a Phenom II X6 1090T/1100T actually. You should look into whether your current board supports those chips. They're fairly cheap on eBay and hold up really well (I'm using one right now whilst between CPUs).

Actually looking through used 380s, I found 380x at ~200$, while regular 380 was at 210$~. So I'll get 380X instead.
I wish I could wait for Zen, but I'll need a desktop by June, and I'm afraid Polaris 10 will be at a premium price, and just drop to <250$ few months later. So I'd rather get 380 now

AMD was the money saving alternative to Nvidia and Intel. Now I can buy Nvidia for cheaper and Intel is so far ahead of AMD that it's not even worth buying the cheaper AMD anymore.

My current mobo has AM2/AM3 socket, so it would fit Phenom II 1090, but 125W? A tad bit way too much. Cooling would be an issue too, I have not-so-great airflow and excellently isolated house (thermally), I'm often sweating, even in winter, room temps are easily >28°C. Also Athlon X4 860 seems to have better single core performance.

Maybe it's because I'm not retarded, but I have never had issues with AMD or Nvidia cards. I've had quite the few pcs configuration and have never had any part die on me, I take care of my stuff, and I make sure to uninstall my current drivers before updating, and I never do day 1 driver updates, I always wait a month or so just in case there are any kinks. When I buy a product it always comes down to price for performance and any coupons or deals I can get. If you want to dedicate your life to a company become a console fag.

Thuban doesn't run hot at all. My 1090T is overclocked to 4GHz with a 0.15V bump and doesn't break 55 in gaymes. At stock voltage and 3.6GHz (max it'll do at that) it doesn't break 45. The 4790K it replaced actually ran way hotter.
As for single core performance between K10 and Steamroller, there's so little in it as to be irrelevant. AMD have spent most of the past five years clawing their way back to where they were with K10 in terms of IPC, after Bulldozer took a massive shit all over the floor.
Your board might not support 125W chips anyway. A lot of older AM3 boards don't, unless they were fairly high end at the time.
