>Nobody is buying PCs any more

This really. Intel has been oblivious to the Global economic crisis and the competition from mobile market. They could have prevented most of the damage by lowering prices. Now 12000 poor souls will have to pay the price while the CEO probably buys a new yacht. As to how they are going to regain market share from the mobile market is anyone's' guess.
>>
>>54123475
So, waste time and effort trying to hire people (good luck with all the interviews cancelled by applicants) until a notice finally comes down from the top to stop the hiring and start firing existing people?

Long live APUs!

intel is about to get BTFO with HBM Zen APUs.

Yet, here we are in 2016, and shipments declined a whopping 10% year-over-year during the first quarter to hit its lowest total since 2007.

That is the problem. They are at Mediamarkt and not in people's homes.
Until A few months ago I had my mum on a e6600 and only upgraded her because my brother dropped enough pieces to built her something better. There really was no incentive to buy new shit with the current prices.

They don't have anything like the dominance they do on the desktop in the latter two markets (in fact, they're basically irrelevant), and cheap laptop chips are low margin. There are also gayme consoles to consider, which AMD have on lockdown.

Would you rather have 1000 people buy 1$ pen
or 10 people buy 50$ pen?

Or would you want to make that pen shittier after release only chance color and make the cost be like 0.1$ / pen then sell it for 1 $ again?
>>
>>54123735
ARM has its uses in phones, tablets, smart TVs and the like, but I have never seen a non-shit laptop use anything other than Intel. Not to say that poorfags don't buy shit products, but any laptop worth a damn has an Intel chip inside.

Anyone who knows two shits about productivity knows you aren't writing jack shit that's actually important on a standard tablet or phone. While desktops are becoming a dying breed, laptops are still a must for any student and are just damn convenient for others. I'd kill myself trying to research for and write a ten page paper on an iPad alone.
>>
Probably the next big thing will be the ultra cheap organic processors.
Invest in any company that decides to work on that.

That's doesn't matter. RISC-V is doomed because they didn't include hardware integer overflow checks to appeal to the C brutes.

Yes. Unless you check for it in SW wasting cycles, an overflow doesn't cause any exception.

I have held shares in AMD stock for years hoping it would pay off. Hopefully it'll blow up soon, doubt it though.

guys......we've all been saying for years that Intel just won't make faster chips because they don't have to.....but what if they simply don't know how to do so? My 2600k is more than enough for pretty much anything other than workloads that would be better handled by a server anyway. That's a serious problem for Intel - I built that PC 7 years ago.

Lose billions a year trying to pay people to use your failed mobile chips. Then kill the PC market by charging $500 for a 2ghz quad core laptop chip that is only marginally faster than $80 phone SoCs.
>>
>>54126903

>Lose billions a year trying to pay people to use your failed mobile chips

I think that's what happened with the Asus zenfone 2 and the Acer c720 chromebook. The c720 at the time was being produced with celeron haswell Intel CPUs that I think intel sold at a loss just to keep more chromebook manufacturers from choosing ARM like Samsung.

I think their atom CPUs are also being sold at a loss to compete with ARM mobile devices. That's why there's such a big influx of dirt cheap atom windows laptops/tablets now.
>>
>attempt to use wildly different infrastructure in a mobile market wherein developers already have to go through hell to play nice with every possible possible
>be surprised when that falls flat on its ass
Should point out that AMD's gearing up for quarterly reports soon, so for all we know they could be tits up
>>
>>54123674
Yup, prices for desktops and laptops are fucking stupid right now. The lowest end shit can barely compete with c2d and still costs hundreds. I bought a refurb 2012 Lelnovo for $100 US (free shipping lol) with a core i3 and it absolutely shits all over anything on store shelves.
>>
Why is Intel failing so hard for phone CPUs? They should taken over all high end phones by now.
>>
>>54127310

Probably their licencing cost

Also mobile chips are system on a chip which usually means custom designs for power saving and whatever hardware gadgets are there. Which doesn't work well with intels one size fits all.

Mobile and Apple specifically have been crushing a lot of established bones lately.
>>
>>54127310
Intel has an insane amount of bureaucracy and is notorious for not being able to iterate thorough designs fast.

Also, they went full retard and dumped XScale to develop an x86 phone SoC.

I believe the former CTO Pat Gelsinger left because of this retardation.

What they should have done is kept XScale and use the tight relationship with XScale customers to push mobile x86 when the chips are ready, not dump XScale first.
>>
>>54127310
>Why is Intel failing so hard for phone CPUs? They should taken over all high end phones by now.
Bloated poorly run company that hasn't faced any competition for almost a decade vs multiple aggressive companies use to fighting over low profit margin mobile parts.

Now the ARM manufacturers combined are much larger than intel. Intel's entire business model is to eliminate any competition by aggressively updating their fabs so it's not economical for anyone else to try. But mobile chips became so popular it became possible for companies other than intel to invest in high end semiconductor fabrication.

Now they are facing competitors that aren't years behind in fabrication tech they aren't good enough at CPU design to stay ahead of everyone else.
>>
>>54127122
That'd be pretty much the end for low end desktops. Unless you want to use those MiniPC clunkers with laptop CPUs in them.
>>
>>54123036
Just fire all those poo in loos they aren't necessary.
>>
>>54126627
It's true, think of all the jobs made for building that yacht.

It probably makes up for the lost jobs entirely.
>>
>>54123036
How many of these 12k positions will be filled with H1-Bs because Intel couldn't find the "qualified workers"?
