Ubuntu 16 comes out on Thursday. I am excited. If you want to upgrade, a clean installation is recommended, so put all your valuable stuff on the cloud and then install Ubuntu 16.

http://www.ubuntu.com/

https://www.linux.com/news/ubuntu-1604-something-get-excited-about

Ubuntu is Linux for human beings with jobs and girlfriends, unlike Ach linux which is for basement dwelling virgin redditors with tiny penises. Happy 16.04 everyone!
>>
Is it smart to install the preview and just upgrade later?

I don't see what difference it makes, especially since it's 3 days away.

Not a preview, it is a release candidate. There is no difference between this and the final installer, except some package updates to fix bugs. You can also install updates through the system updater.

It is very stable at this point, but YMMV
>>
>>54107076
>I think you mean 16.04 as in 2016-04

Spare me your pedantry faggot. It's going to be known as 16 for years to come, not 16.04. People refer to 14 as 14 LTS.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

1) That's for GTK+2 only. Not only is Firefox about to move to GTK+3 (so you won't be able to make use of it there), but you can't just put big changes into a toolkit that's in maintenance mode.
2) Was it reviewed? Were any concerns addressed? Was it rejected? Why?

You can't say "NIH" without understanding what that means.
>>
>>54109758
Literally nothing written there had anything to do with security past the first paragraph. Shitty practice, certainly, but not security risks.

As for the first paragraph,
1) Does anybody ever look at the "Security Advisories" anybody puts out? I wasn't even aware distros did this, and this is coming from someone who uses CentOS, Fedora, Ubuntu (server), AND Mint almost daily.
2) It uses the same packages as Ubuntu and Debian, it's trivial to just look at the "Advisories" from there.

Honest question. Why does everyone insist Linux is better for server stuff? Granted my use case is very small. My mini media server only has to serve up to a max of 4 people. Sharing a folder or printer is as simple as right clicking the folder in question, going through a few properties menus, and done. Each person has their own user account.

Windows fucked itself as it's wont to do because of a sudden power outage. I installed Linux. After 2 hours of fucking around and googling several problems, I got a folder shared over the network. Problem is, I'm the only one who can connect. I tried everything and it amounted to nothing. Not to mention transfer speed of the network is a measly 55MB/s where as on Windows I was getting 130+MB/s.

What gives? I'm going to give it one more try, complete blank slate and step by step with the help of the forum, but getting even simple server use out of Linux seems so convoluted compared to Windows.

This is coming from someone who has been use Linux Ubuntu as a major OS on laptop and desktop for a few years now. Only now that I need server use out of it does it present problems.
>>

I personally use NVIDIA because they're the best, but lots of people are fine on AMD. It's a good way to save a few hundred dollars on a build.

1) Windows machines are simply not as stable as Linux-based machines. There's a reason "restarting it" is a much bigger thing in Windows than it is in Linux. Generally speaking, Windows machines have a much, MUCH harder time staying on for the hundreds of days that are required of servers, where Linux machines really don't.

2) Sharing over Windows networks generally uses the SMB protocol. You can configure Linux machines for SMB servers, NFS servers (which are MUCH faster and Windows 7+ compatible depending on the W7 version), FTP servers, or whatever else you want. I don't want to sound like a pedantic fuck but if you lost speed, you're doing something wrong. Keep in mind that most RJ-45 ports these days are gigabit: the theoretical max you can get is 125MB/s. Windows is reporting the speed wrong unless you're on 10gbps connections.

3) Use SMB server for your situation. It's extremely easy to set up if you look it up. (couple minutes in smb.conf). If you need to edit fstab for automatic mount, be careful; fstab's tricky and a bad edit can mean you're going to need a LiveCD to get back in there and fix the mess.
>>
Newfag to linux. Was about to install Ubuntu on an old AMD-based win 8 laptop. Should I just wait for the release since it's so close?
>>
>>54111541
Thanks for the actual input! And yes I figured Windows was falsely reporting speeds as I know the limit of my LAN. Using cat5e and gigabit switch.

I know there are several edits one can do to the b.conf file. I just want to get the thing up and running first. I'm assuming samba share can be accessed by multiple users simultaneously without a problem? That was a major hitch Windows had. A share couldn't be mounted as a network drive by more than one person at a time, so you'd have to browse the server share via network section of the file manager in Windows.

Is there like a super noob guide for starting out with samba? I'm decent with Linux but I'm not one to assume I know everything. Don't want to fuck up and find it was something fundamental that was wrong.
>>
>>54111496
How secure is amahi remote access? I'm currently using SFTP for my remote access and the speed is decent for a phone (~2MB/s with 4G/a halfway decent wifi connection). Can I get better with Amahi without sacrificing security?

Samba is fairly easy and intuitive to configure for a share-all public folder, I didn't even need a guide the first time. Here's one of my shares for example (you could just change this for your situation then add it to the end of smb.conf:

#[Media] means it will appear to as [Media] inside your computer in the Windows network
[Media]
#Really have no Idea what comment does
comment = Media Share
#Path to the directory to share
path = /srv/shares/media/super/
#Browsable by others
browsable = yes
#Accessible by anonymous users
guest ok = yes
#Change to yes if you want write access
writable = no
#Mask for new stuff - doesn't matter too much.
#0644 is rw-r--r--
create mask = 0644

Few things to discuss though, i'll cover them in the next post

>>
>>54111687
>>54111613
Yeah, it should I would think. I'm on 14.04 but I'd imagine the package is identical.

Alright, few things:
-I believe I'm on the default smb.conf settings still (didn't change much if anything from the default smb.conf file).

-My partition mounts to /srv/shares/media at boot

-The /super/ at the end of the path is the top folder in the partition. Without this, if the partition fails to mount for whatever reason, and the share is writable, users will be able to write in an empty directory you're supposed to be mounting in - this is a big no-no. There's nicer ways to do this (with symlinks), but this works for me until I get bored and mess with it.

-The partitions shared can be any filesystem and will be readable by Windows machines (afaik - I've shared JFS, XFS, and ext4 and they all work)

-On that note, NTFS is a little weird when it comes to permissions on linux systems. You'll have to set the permissions at mount time (in fstab). There's a workaround but I haven't messed with it. The easier workaround is to just not use NTFS.

-Before you share everything, go to the directory and do a
sudo chown -R nobody:nogroup *

This removes the owners from the files, preventing some weird read problems from happening.

It's great for web servers, database and the like. If you have Windows clients it makes sense to use Windows Server for Active Directory, Group Policy, File and Print. Anyone who says you should use Linux as a back end for Windows clients has never been employed. The right tool for the right job. Licensing a windows server will pay for the time you spend troubleshooting samba several times over.
>>
>>54112250
nigger what. The vast majority of the internet is Windows clients and you don't see people running servers in Windows.

And samba is honestly one of the easiest networking things to set up and maintain, no troubleshooting required.

Correct. I'm talking about a managed office environment with a directory service, file shares, and network printers. Anyone who tries to convince their boss to do all that with Linux should be escorted off premises for being a fucking moron.

>And samba is honestly one of the easiest networking things to set up and maintain, no troubleshooting required.

You've obviously never tried to make a shared printer available to Windows clients with Samba. Get a job and come back in a couple of years.
