Windows 10 kills fragmentation. Users are stupid. Consumers have done it to themselves. For years Microsoft tolerated a million different system configs. with various levels of patches because somebody turned windows update off: had people simply read the guidelines and installed recomended patches none of this would have been necessary.

I'm sorry it sucks for people who are stuck in the old ways, but the future is constantly updated machines. The future is no fragmentation. The future is everyone on the same feature-set. It helps improve the quality of life for everyone.
>>
>win 10 will full screen update and reboot with no warning unless you pay $100 more for the server version
>>
You can disable updates by using Wi-Fi and marking the connection as a metered connection.

I have done this only because if I don't, there's a risk that Windows will automatically restart at 3 AM, when my machine is in sleep mode next to my bed. The restart takes the machine out of sleep mode and makes its fans whirr, waking me up at 4 AM.

This has happened twice, and it is not happening again.

What the fuck does that even mean? It turns itself back on? Fuck off, it doesn't. I have had them disabled since I installed Windows 10 in November except for when I downloaded the 1511 Update. Something about the registers and windows update. I did it a while back and have not had it pop up since. It still shows up on the bottom right on my laptop though, however, I did do that one more recently so that might be why.
>>
>>54103039
>What the fuck does that even mean?
What he said, except it's not correct. If you did have Windows Update on, then your other settings would have been reset, services turned back on etc. Since Windows Update does this and you've disabled it, nothing can happen.

But then you also don't get security updates, so that's not a great solution.
>>
>>54102902

Enjoy your viruses.
>>
>>54102624
In most parts I agree this is only beneficial for average consumer:

But still if you want to just avoid updates and have ability to customize block / remove features just use windows 10 enterprise version.
>>
>>54103742
Not him but I've been using Windows 7 for over a year now, no anti virus, updates turned off and I still don't have a virus. What's funny though is that Windows 10 had recently been targeted with ransomware.
>>
>>54103977

OSS and Linux also have ransomware. Your point? Rather stay updated to the latest software to stay safe.
>>
>>54104029
I also use OSX, but there's no need to warn people for viruses as long as they don't do dumb shit. I prefer 7 over 10 by a landslide, if Microsoft didn't do this stupid bs with 10 it would have been an instant upgrade, I'd actually would have bought it even.
>>
>>54103086
Just outright disable Windows Update. I did that years ago and have never ever been asked to upgrade to Windows 10.
>>
>>54104144
What I'm worried about is WUpdate being enabled when I do a fresh install so it upgrades before I get a chance to disable it.

I'm trying out Wine for game emulation first.
>>

>>
>>54104180
You can do that during Windows installation, it will ask you whether you want to enable automatic updates, enable manual updates, or disable updates altogether.

Even if it doesn't, worst case scenario - just disconnect your computer from the internet until you're done with basic setup (booting into Windows first time, disabling services and that).
>>
>>54102624

Windows microsoft was the worst thing even for decades. They used to not have a auto update system at all. They would just post a patch on the site list all the vulnerabilities it fixed and then watch everyone get the viruses that instantly got made because of it.

Actually something changed recently.
When it shows me the "updates available" notifications and I esc out of it, it will not display it again until I update and new updates are available after updating.
Before it kept bugging me every day about the "delayed" updates.

This is pro version though, I know home guys don't get the choice.
So it's basically like updates in 7 if you got the pro version.
Literally the only thing that changed is that you can't tell it when to look for updates - it will do it on its own in background.

As for OP - yes. Forced updates are for normies (home edition users) for all the reasons you provided.

There is nothing wrong with telemetry.

There is everything wrong with not being able to opt out of it, which you can not do at all.

It does not help that Microsoft repeatedly used dishonest methods(and continues to do so) to sneak Windows 10 on people's computers before forcing them to upgrade because they did not know better or are just not informed enough to do anything about it. Then the audacity to brag about how many people switched over without mentioning that a significant portion of those were forced to. It says a lot about the product.

This shit is what convinced me to get a Macbook. Windows tries too hard to be helpful, fucking over the usability and the user interface in the process. TWO control panels, one of which is a confusing mess of huge, vague buttons and ugly animations. Don't forget the copious amounts of whitespace because flat designnnnnnnn

It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't turn Windows into this one gigantic pile of shit by slapping on UIs designed for tablets in Windows 8 and then adding in desktop support as a fucking afterthought? UWP has little value and I'm not interested in tacky apps that were made by someone who designed everything for a phone and left 24" screens with 180dpi buttons and one-click navigation.

Bash on Windows will only add to the clusterfuck since it's still depending on a fucking Ubuntu VM running in the background, which is pathetic and useless since it won't interoperate with Windows applications. Cool, we have grep, awk and sed, but we can't use them with anything. It's not going to entice developers back because it's nearly the same thing as running Ubuntu in VMWare and running PuTTY.

You don't control Windows 10; Windows 10 controls you. I only use it for video games now because it's so goddamn worthless at anything else.
