Why would anyone use Linux now that Windows officially has the Bash shell. You'd have to be a huge neckbeard to use Linux as a desktop.

Has anyone here actually met someone in real life who uses Linux? Do they leave their house?
>>
people use Linux for Freedom™, not for bash. The point is to get away from Windows and its baggage.

Most major corporations use it. Business over 5 employees often use it at least by proxy. Basically if you have a job you've probably had contact with Linux regardless of whether you realize it.
>>
The only good reason I've found to use Linux is that it runs well on old hardware because it's lightweight.

I've never seen a use for it outside of that, and it's pretty tough to tear me away from like 26 years of using a the Windows environment.
>>
>>54093837

That's server though.

The context of the question was obviously aimed at desktop / laptop Linux use.
>>
>>54094504
I mean there are some obvious reasons
>free
>runs well on old hardware
>complete control over your own OS
>most people just use computers for the web so OSs dont really matter that much
for me it was the complete control. As a programmer I like to tell my computer how to do things and not the other way around. I also like to style my computer without the overhead of running a program ontop of the existing desktop environment. The fact that when something goes wrong I have the option of going into the OS files and changing them, and that those changes are all well documented, often telling me what they do inside their own config files, unlike the registry editor or most of the "windows" folder which you can only really properly edit by involving microsoft(how many times have you read "I contacted M$ and they told me to edit XXX Keys in the regedit). Just the modularity of linux astounds me, sure its nothing like the minix days but I can remove and replace the desktop enviornment, network manager, and even the kernel it self(of course removing the kernel is generally a bad idea, but you get the point). Linux is wonderful in this way.

But it cant play directX games so it might as well belong in the trash.
>>
>>54093501
I use zsh on GNU/Linux, and frankly that's not even one of the main reasons I use GNU/Linux to begin with. Also, I hate /g/ for making me second guess calling it Linux or GNU/Linux.

Linux is a lighter, more secure server OS which allows managers to upgrade more easily than Windows Server 20XX.

Proprietary software is guided by two factors: money and deadline
This causes the company that designs the software to look for the cheapest programmer and the programmer to half-ass it to get it done in time.

confirmed for never using Linux and/or Windows in any environment other than their mom's basement.

Probably comparing Arch Linux to Windows 7 and then thinking they know what the rest of the world's tech industry is really like.

I use linux and rarely leave the house. The only person I know who has agoraphobia uses Windows 7. He was supposed to come over the other night but got too scared in the dark and ran home. What the fuck. OP, you don't have your fucken head screwed on. The other two PCs I have running both run FreeBSD because one just plays audio and one just does torrents. I have Windows 98 on a ThinkPad for if I ever get the desire to run games. If I ever get the desire to use a ThinkPad, it boots Debian too.

Open source is half-ass all the time because special snowflake volunteer developers only want to work on what interests them and no one wants to put in the shit work it takes to produce a finished product.

Then you've got your talent spread across hundreds of slightly different ways to solve one problem because every time someone's feelings get hurt projects get forked.

I use Linux because it's free.
I do have windows on my gaming pc, but only because muh games, for everything else I use Fedora or Ubuntu. Linux also performs better and I don't have to bother with an antivirus.

If you don't play video games or use a windows only application or feature, you have no reason not to use Linux.

Manually running hacky scripts over ssh isn't very efficient. What about the computers that don't happen to be powered on? What about those laptops that are almost never in the office?

I use it for servers, but for day to day shit Windows 7 SP1 works fine. I also have used redhat and backtrack for school. I don't have anything against linux, I am just a gamer primarily. There is no arguing that Linux is far superior in the security department. A lot of people use it. Different strokes you know, use what you like. Or you can just dual boot.

True, Microsoft licensing is a fucking mess, but until a Linux distro includes management tools, Windows still has the least cost of ownership.

... this would be a relevant point if anyone was still using Windows Server for anything.

bash is garbage

thankfully, linux, unlike windows, exposes a lot of functionality through virtual filesystems and software tools, so i can automate my OS in a decent language like python instead of a shitty, insecure, slow, godawful GNU fork of a 1970s ALGOL for dummies. windows doesn't do that. windows uses its APIs and powershell.

if you use windows and use bash instead of powershell you're a fucking idiot. bash isn't even a standard, it's yet another pile of retarded quirks on top of standard sh (just like ksh/zsh) so portability is NOT a reason.
