The power draw is in the midrange, the performance is in the top range and the dies are being kept small for right now by both companies on the consumer side.
Of course, if you wanted to spend 30K on a chip you could get big Pascal, though you wouldn't be able to use it.
On another note, I'm worried for Nvidia since they don't seem to have a handle on Async, they're moving back to a design more like Fermi which means they're burning up a lot of transistors to readd the FP64 hardware, and they were already neck and neck with AMD without having to sacrifice die space for that. If they didn't have some huge design wins in reworking their cores they're going to watch AMD eat their lunch and not be able to do much without throwing away a lot of money in the process.

Nvidia pissed off sony with the ps3 so the chances of sony ever giving them businesses again are slim to none (which explains why Nvidia got so salty when AMD got the cotnract).
AMD has a fairly decent history with nintendo. IBM have ragequit all their fabs and intel can't provide a powerful enough gpu for sony or MS's needs. This basically leaves AMD the only name in town unless you go full custom which neither sony or MS were prepared to do given the horrific shitshow that resulted from the ps3/360.
What /g/ fails to realise that unless something major happens from Nvidia or Intel AMD has the console market sewn up for the next decade as they are the only one that can provide an all-in-one computing solution. Remember: latest rumours peg the nintendo NX as using AMD parts (possibly even 14/16nm hardware).
>>54087491

are you retarded? AMD isn't anywhere near beating nvidia, they can't even release cards at the same price point that perform near the level of nvidia's cards.
>Nvidia beats AMD because of marketing, nothing more.
marketing won't help you at all if you don't have better performance, nvidia and amd were pretty much equal from ~2007-2011 and nvidia only had a 5-10% market share advantage then. they only sold a lot more once AMD started doing really stupid shit like not fixing their dx11 implementation and rebranding.
i hope AMD recovers, but it might already be too late. they've bled an insane amount of market share (they lost ~50% of their gaming market share and lost all of their pro 3d and supercomputing share as well).

They have about 1/4 of the graphics card market, which I'm baffled why it's that low, since you can actually hold onto an AMD GPU for like 3+ generations, and continue to have solid peformance, unlike Nvidias offerings.
It has 100% market share of GPUs in the current gen Wii, X Box, and PS, and 66% of the CPU market, in the PS, and X Box.
Luckly, Intel makes great non gimped CPUs, that you can hold onto forever, but AMD is the savior on thr GPU side, because Nvidia is trash.

I like their products, I can get 20-30% more performance then from Intel/Nvidia, they're great to overclock and reliable. Same with their GPUs.
They're rarely used in servers/workstation because of "high" power usage and/or because their highest performing CPUs can't compete with the highest performing Intel CPUs. But again, in the same price range, you get more performance with AMD. Another reason why there is so much Intel in pre-built desktop computers is because of their unethical marketing and backroom dealing. In respect to servers/workstations their position is justified though.

You would be the first one to die, SJW.
Built an AMD PC on for super cheap after my decent i5 build went to shit, I expected maybe 10 degrees difference and a bit more noise but this CPU is disgusting in terms of thermals and noise. My stock Intel cooler barely made any noise or went above 75°

Also AMD and Intel are to ink some deal regarding integrated GPUs for intel chips soon. AMD has no choice since it's desperate for cash. Even if temporary, that just means future gen intels will rape AMD cpus even more. AMD is finished.
AMD Polaris and Vega must beat Nvidia this time, otherwise it really gets critical.

??? Amd has the lower end side of the market by the balls, nvidia don't have shit on amd. If amd focuses on the one thing it does best from all of its competitors, which is provide amazing price/performance hardware, they'd dominate their part of the market. Nvidia releases good cards and all, but not everyone is prepared to pay $600+ for a gpu.

I don't get it, isn't the ps4 using a HD7850 and 2 quad core laptop processors sharing 8GB gddr5 across them all?
That seems plenty powerful for 1080p in my opinion, not at desktop ultra settings, but for medium 1080p, I honestly fail to see how it can't handle that.

>AMD's Zen was designed by a talent-starved team on a money-starved budget with a worker-starved staff in a hope-starved company. good joke friend. none of these things are true.
in fact the opposite is true in all respects, AMD hired on one of the best CPU architects on the planet, talked deeply with GloFo and Samsung, and basically abandoned every other CPU project they had to focus on Zen.

Even that would be enough for 1080p low settings with medium textures and 2x tessellation at 1080p, but you're wrong, it is a 7850.
Consoles use low level APIs, so they get better performance than desktops. Look at dx11 vs dx12 performance for AMD CPUs and GPUs.
Care to cite your sources on that gpu though?
They only need to shovel shit towards the journalists that keep them on life support. Free cards and gimmicky initiatives that sound original but are respun existing features to generate hype in "the next" big thing in gaming that never materializes. The FX CPUs offer about the same real-world performance as an Intel CPU costing twice as much. The one thing they lack is an integrated GPU, but since "enthusiast" is code for "faggot gamer" their target market probably doesn't care about that too much since they'll be slapping some ridiculous graphics card in there anyway.
>>54092608
Pretty sure my fx 8320 can match an outperform, or match, the i5 4460 in the games I play, and can be overclocked for better performance.
Also cost 60 aud less than the i5 when I bought it.
So yes, it does. For battlefield 4. And for gta v I don't care because I'm still getting more than 60FPS

Ok! I am actually going to build a new computer, and I wanted to take a look at what AMD offers before I make up my mind. I don't play alot of games, but when I do I want it to work perfectly. Wich one would you buy today, if you were building a "gamer" computer?
Three chips and six derivatives are exactly what AMD did with GOAT HD7k series.
7750/7770, 7850/7870, and 7950/7970 (excluding the special release 7870XT which was basically a 7950 with 4 CUs and a faulty memory controller disabled)
Now AMD seem to be releasing three chips, and six derivatives once more.
P11 cutdown/full, p10 cut down/full, and assumedly Vega cut down and full.
With any hopes they can completely replace their product stack and retire all old designs which don't otherwise serve the ultra low end/OEM segments.
You won't see old parts still in inventory drop prices much if at all compared to their new performance equivalents.
>>54092819
If I were building a "gamer" computer for myself rather than waste money on a CPU I would just buy some bleach and drink it, but then I have a sense of shame.
What's your budget?
>>54092682

polaris 11 is 1/4th the performance of a gtx950, so i'm pretty sure we won't see a desktop version of it. we'll most likely see it in the zen apus coming out next year.

AMD hardware runs all three consoles, and their APUs are very popular for low cost budget systems and HTPC setups.
A lot of their gaming GPUs are solid as well, they make a nice middle ground in a lot of areas (example - Nvidia has absolutely nothing available between the $180 GTX 960 and the $340 GTX 970, which is where a bunch of AMD's R9 cards are).
Lastly, they got a huge boost from cryptonerds grinding their GPUs into dust mining bitcoins, although this has slowed down quite a bit.
AMD still has a few revenue streams like the PS4/Xbone chips, Apple (M370X in the MBP and Firepro in the trashcan computer), the upcoming Nintendo NX and whatever chips they can get to system builders for laptops, as well as their cards which are popular among memecoin miners.
Basically they don't make money, but they have a rather robust life support system.

That is the results of years of bribes by intel to companies like Dell and HP to only use Intel processors. Tho Intel was sued for this and had to pay anti-trust funds after lawsuits in Europe and in the US. But the damage is already done so nobody really used AMD now that they are so used to Intel.
Nividia does their own bribes, hence you see their logo and catchphrase "The way it's meant to be played" in so many games. And retarded gamers get brainwashed after seeing these logos and catchphrase so many times.
> Just how do they do it? Do they have patents? What for? AMD tech is literally obsolete and bested by either Intel or Nvidia. Did they outsource all their shit to India or something?
That's the interesting part... yes AMD does have certain patents that Intel pays for. At one point... Intel was being sued for anti-trust all around the world... and Intel decided to settle by paying a few billions as well as share their x86 patent with AMD for free. Meanwhile... AMD actually owns the patent for x64. Intel still pays for that patent yearly.
Meanwhile... Nvidia has burnt so many bridges and fucked over many companies that nobody wants to use Nvidia any longer except retarded PC gamers. On the mobile side.. companies don't want to work with nvidia anymore. Their mobile processor is just inferior to others and sometimes buggy shit. On the gaming side... Microsoft even had a lawsuit at one point against nvidia over some xbox shit... but then both decided to just settle and move pretend to be friends again... meanwhile Microsoft decided to just go AMD for their new consoles and never looked back. Nowadays.. even PC gamers are slowly realizing all the shady shit nvidia does and slowly switching to amd. It's a slow ripple effect.
AMD is far from obsolete like you are claiming. In fact, they are more relevant than ever with DX12 on the horizon.

Is it still good? It's sold way cheaper than i3s where I live and I wanted a somewhat decent gpu for pc games on a 720 res It's for my office so I didn't want to spend shekels on anything big..
>>54096197
anything more than 60 hz for a monitor is too much and sync monitors in general are meme tech. how does it feel to know u spent your money on meme technology? :^)
>>54097733
>and sync monitors in general are meme tech
spoken like a true poorfag.
>>54097760
>You don't spend your money on useless shit you must be poor
Literally Macfag logic

For some reason military buys a lot of AMD products for their machines
>>54095611
Game ready drivers dont work that way anon
If there is a drop in older applications, then its because they're purposely gimping their drivers
>>54097781
Because it's cheap as hell, that's the main thing AMD has going for it and why so many companies prefer to go AMD. It doesn't cost them a fortune to buy AMD cards in bulk and it just werks (when it's not being broken by shitty drivers). AMD also caters to the cross platform market, while nvidia only cares about windows. All macs are powered by amd gpus right now. AMD is kinda a hit or miss company, every once in a while they release something game changing like high bandwidth memory, athlon 64, but then they shortly go back to being unknown again.
>>54086970
>watt/performance is bullshit
This is literally how you measure performance. You are truly an idiot if you think otherwise.
I'd like AMD to do well too since Intel and Nvidia have way too much influence which is bad for innovation and progress.
>>54091847
Its not that simple.
>>54087742
>stock Fury beating 980TiOC
wat
>mfw I have a Fury X
>>54095481
Holy shit this much mad. Nvidia was always better you poorfag.
>>54098398
For gaming, yes. Only because Nvidia managed to make all companies optimise their games for nvidia whether they like it or not. For pretty much everything else, both AMD and nvidia cards are fairly equal (provided AMD gets their shit together and actually releases good drivers).
>>54098416
>(provided AMD gets their shit together and actually releases good drivers).
So year later you mean
>>54098442
As I've posted before, AMD is a very hit or miss company. One time they release something revolutionary like athlon 64, the r9 290, but then they go back to mediocrity again for a while. I hope Vega doesn't disappoint. Running a zen system with amd vega would be comfy as fuck.
>7 yo AMD CPU has more computational power than I'll ever need
>it will only be replaced after it dies
>7 yo AMD GPU is perfect for my use-case and lets me any and all games up to 2015
>it will only be replaced after it dies, or when I need to run something that my current card can't
Not to mention the entire rig consumes about the same power as a single modern high-end GPU, and that's after considering my non-80+ PSU's inefficiency.
AMD products last forever so they earn shit cash because nobody ever upgrades.
...or at least that was the case before they entered "The Great Jewing Competition" with Intel/Nvidia and started producing their own shit-durability parts to force more sales.
Competition ain't all that healthy for the market it seems.
I want ATI back. I want old AMD back. Fuck.

>t-this benchmark is b-bullshit
Typical ayymdrone damage control. Retarded AMDeluded fanboys call every benchmark that doesn't favor their beloved ayymd bullshit. What a cancerous fanbase.
>>54094120
>290 is bearing the 970
No. A 290x loses to a 970 in the majority of games unless they're unoptimized turds like QB or amd sponsored like Hitman.
>>54095481
>This whole post
Virgin detected.
>>54092342
not its not you nigger. it's even more powerful than a 7850. wherein the 7850 has 16 execution units the ps4 gpu has 18, while a stock 7870 has 20. it's the xbone one which is pretty close to a 7770 as far as i knew
>>54097733
>Hasn't experienced the pleasure of 120hz monitor
144hz isn't a big jump from 120, but its still there. The fact you've never experienced 120 is sad. I never spoke shit about something I'd never tried, and I'm EXTREMELY glad I did do it.
Your argument is thus invalid, and that's even without having to even consider the just as stupid second part of it.
>>54099325
You are correct. PS4 is roughly a 7850, Xb1 is 7770.
>>54099416
not the guy i am talking about but lately i see some people saying if your games can't keep up 120/144hz or the game is locked at 60 they see stuttering or someshit that made them sick, is that a lie because i am a poorfag and i need a new monitor, so i have to choose between higher hz or just stick to 60hz but i do hate the constant screen tearing on 60hz and vsync doesn't always fix things
>>54099617
IF you get a 120/144hz monitor, get a -sync monitor because that will make the monitor refresh exactly to how many frames the game gives. Anyone who claims they felt sick from having a higher refresh rate screen is a fucking liar.
Now, as for screen tear, that's exactly why G and Freesync exist. To eliminate screen tear at ANY framerate (over 30) without needing to use V-sync.
If you're upgrading anyway, I'd 100% recommend going for 120/144hz monitors, though you'll get the best result out of them if they're G/Freesync. Considering you say you don't have loads of free cash, I'd recommend Freesync. It's cheaper and just as good. Anyone who says otherwise has NOT done any research because only the very, very first few monitors with it were any worse.
The current ones released are exactly as good.
>>54099192
I would be ashamed of posting this picture if I were you.
At this point it's so outdated it's considered disinformation.
>legacy driver discontinued
And AMD released an update to the legacy driver post-announcement anyway.
It was more of a "we want to focus on new cards" rather than "we no longer give a fuck about old cards" kinda deal.
>benchmarks
Outdated as fuck. That landscape has changed much since mostly due to drivers.
But you probably believe the no drivers meme so you don't even allow this scenario in your head.
>3d application settings
What's even pictured there? Tessellation adjustment slider that works? Limited 3d accelerator settings?
If it's the latter then yes, AMD is still behind on that.
>WHQL meme
>Card killing that happens on both sides, and is always blown out of proportion
(Bonus points: Nvidia's WHQL-certified drivers managed to kill cards - which only serves to solidify the fact that WHQL is a meme)
Did I leave anything out?
>>54097383
Don't I had a setup like that but I returned. You are better off getting a 860k and 950.
Or i3 6100 and 950.
i3 might be dual core but it can whoop the AMD chips.
>>54099680
well i have an amd r9 290 pcs+ right now and a fx 6350 cpu so clearly i don't really have loads of cash, if it's not too much work could you recommend me a good monitor that would work with those specs, i don't care for size as long as it's not less than 21 inch, i don't need extras like curved screen, and since my gpu and cpu aren't very good i am okay with 1080p res
>>54099691
>And AMD released an update to the legacy driver post-announcement anyway.
They said they'd release a final crimson driver after the announcement. That additional driver was not unexpected.
>>54099691
>Once in a blue moon nvidia releases bad drivers, then pulls them back in when they learn how unstable the drivers are
>OK LOOK NVIDIOTS, THIS IS WHY AMD IS CLEARLY BETTER, AMD WOULD NEVER DO SUCH A THING, LOOK AT OUR SUPERIOR DRIVERS AND SUPPORT
>AMD has shitty drivers practically every time
I love the AMD shills on /g/, they're top tier humour material.
>>54099996
Which part of my post implied that?
All I said is the fact that Nvidia gets all their drivers WHQL certified is irrelevant, so the picture I was criticizing has no right to bash AMD for lack of aforementioned certification.
>OK LOOK NVIDIOTS, THIS IS WHY AMD IS CLEARLY BETTER, AMD WOULD NEVER DO SUCH A THING, LOOK AT OUR SUPERIOR DRIVERS AND SUPPORT
In case you missed it, I'll quote it for you:
>Card killing that happens on both sides, and is always blown out of proportion
>Card killing that happens on both sides
>both sides
>BOTH
Yes. This clearly states that "AMD would never do such a thing".
>>54100036
I wasn't countering your argument le sir, I was merely adding on to your post!
>>54100079
That was a weird way to go about it then.
>>54099815
Sorry, was off doing other stuff.
I don't know all of the different panels out there right now, and my monitor (XG270HU) seems like it no longer gets stocked anywhere.
Best bet is just to type in 'Freesync monitor' and have a look, ask around/check reviews for issues with them though.
