I don't think you understand how inherently configurable are KDE and even Gnome.
>>
>>54058198

Agreed, best look.

I've never seen a nostalgiatard riced KDE/GNOME setup that looks even remotely as good as the real thing, using the Redmond theme and lazily replacing a couple icons with shitty Windows 95 pixel icons does not a nice interface make.

Yup. Except, the best was the NeXTSTEP interface. WindowMaker/GNUStep is a close approximation, but far from perfect.
>>
modern linux WM's unironically look this shitty out of the box
>>
>>54058868
I think NeXTSTEP looks way better in monochrome desu

Still up there on my list though, Considering getting my hands on a ThinkPad 560 and sticking OPENSTEP on it for a similar setup to Jobs' daily driver until OS X could run on PowerBooks.
>>
>>54058933
>implying
that shit was actually consistent

Linux WMs look like XP with a shitty deviantart theme pre-applied
>>
>>54058942
Why OPENSTEP rather than GNUStep?
>>
>>54058981
Aside from the obvious points of application compatibility and performance, like >>54058868 I don't really find GNUstep as visually appealing.

I'm also interested in trying out the real OS since I'm playing with the idea of grabbing a slab or a cube some time this year.
>>
>>54058198
I think most of the people who tend to enjoy that lack of eye candy and simplicity all tend to gravitate toward less UI elements too.
So they're probably running window managers with nothing but a task bar.

I'm using the i3wm with only a task bar. "dmenu" is all the menu I need, and I just use the default gtk theme "raleigh" which looks pretty much just like that windowsxp screenshot

The people who enjoy having a bunch of menus and stuff are probably less likely to want that oldschool look.
>>
>>54059072
How do you install Openstep on modern hardware? I didn't think it was developed anymore.
>>
>>54058981
How about AfterStep? Anyone tried that?

Yeah, I liked the old 9x/2000/xp look to. I like 7's to but the older gui's were much easier to navigate imo. Funny, newer os like 10/server 10, favor flat design look and do file compression to reduce install bloat. They should just bring back ye old 9x/2000 gui and mixed it with updated code to support latest hardware and called it a day.

It isn't, NeXTSTEP ended with OPENSTEP 4.2 around 1997.

That's why I'm putting it on contemporary hardware instead.

>>54059225
Modern OS X's take on flat design is so pathetically awful it's not even funny, who thought that off-matte shit was a good idea?

For years, I thought 9x looked ugly as shit, but it's grown on me lately. Particularly 95's UI, which is uncluttered, simple, and clean.
fucking Platinum is so sexy though, I need that shit back in my life

>>54058868
NeXTSTEP is pretty, but actually using it isn't that comfy, not like pre-X OSX and Windows 9x.

>>54059170
>OPENSTEP
>on modern hardware
You don't. Driver support is piss-poor, even getting it installed on a machine of the day is a mild toss-up because of that. Good luck trying to get your CD drive and disk drive recognized, let alone anything else.

>>54059225
man, I don't like OSX's current UI one bit
I'm pretty sure 10.4 is the best OSX has looked.

OS X *FINALLY* has a consistent, unified look after 15 years and people are complaining?
10.4 is nostalgic. It looks like shit when you actually use it. Pic related.
>>
>>54058868
i wonder if someone could help me with a problem with windowmaker, i somehow got my right click menu to be titled "debian" instead of "applications" and if like to have that on my other linux machine now

i dont know how i did it, but it had more stuff than the regular menu
>>
>>54059362
I don't really see much inconsistency in there at all, I also use an iMac G4 with 10.4 reasonably frequently, it's not bad to use at all.

I'm a little torn. While I appreciate the older interfaces, part of me also felt that the gray-on-gray , "fake 3D" buttons and tabs were really dull and a little depressing. I'm not saying I want my interface to look like it was made by Fisher Price, but a little more brightness and color don't hurt.

Anything is better than this trainwreck. It's like Microsoft hired freetards from every open source DE project and made them work together.
>>
>>54059452
something I will never understand is why since XP you need to hack the uxtheme to get unsigned themes to work. I mean, at some point the fucktards at Microsoft thought about letting people make the themes? or let someone get signed themes on it?

Microsoft and Apple are such idiots, so afraid of someone customizing their OS with a fucking theme or god forbid an icon set. The only good thing in that matter that Windows did good was letting you go back to classic if you wanted, that being need or just because you wanted.

changing the XP theme from the stupid shit luna theme to anything and/or change the icons with an iconpack isn't heavy customization. In fact it's basic shit.
>>
>>54059566
but people who are employed can still download custom themes made by people who aren't. that's the whole spirit of open sores.

I also like XP better than mah minimalism Windows 10.

>>
>>54060415
using OS/2's UI is a pain in the dick for like no reason
if there was one thing that was really neat though, it was being able to customize the colors of individual windows and folders

but hot damn, using Windows 3 felt nicer
not that it mattered too much when most of your programs ended up being Windows 3 programs anyway

I've always hoped for a major Linux distro to go all out for "user friendliness" but with like a 1998 standard of user friendliness instead of a modern one (like ubuntu) and go with a simple look like some of these screenshots.

I think something like that could potentially be quite popular.

You're probably mostly right, but I go back and forth. Sometimes I appreciate eyecandy, and other times it just feels too distracting, and cluttered.

I've recently become a fan of Fluxbox. 'mI looking for the perfect balance between gorgeous as fuck, and extremely simple. I can do one or the other, but can't seem to find that sweet spot.
