Bought a Dell 11 inch to see what the fuss was about. Used it for a few days and stuck it back in it's box and in the cupboard. Useless. I just haven't got round to selling it yet as I'm in the process of renovating a flat and haven't had time.
>>

Bought one, used it for a week, returned it. Complete trash.
>>
>>54049818
Negative.
They're made in such a way it's impossible/very hard to get a proper OS running on them. The Chromebook 2 is a great example, you will need to use Crouton to get anything running and there's also problems with storage space.

Still more useful and less gimmicky than a Macbook.

Macbooks can run all flavours of Linux and Windows. Many Linux programmers actually use a macbook with Debian/Fedora/Ubuntu/Whatever because of the keyboard.

Shit, they have shitty weak processors, tiny storage, and too little RAM. Worse is some of them use ARM processors *shudders*

I got one used for like $60 on ebay and just wanted it for school. Works out real nice but crouton is a must imo. Itnalso takes time to configure whatever flavor you choose witg crouton because some vital packages are going to be missing.

Chromebooks are ONLY notoriously underpowered, exactly as one would expect from a 150$-250$ laptop.
And seriously, getting a Chromebook into dev mode and installing GNU tools is easier than getting into lenovo BIOS/uefi setup.
>>
>>54051175
Like I said, the Toshiba Chromebook 2 CAN NOT run GNU/Linux without Crouton. The storage space problem is real too since they have soldered internal memory of merely a few gigabytes so you will need to use a slow as fuck SD card for extra storage.

I fucking love mine:

$350 retail, instead I got it for free with my Air Miles.

Like ten hours of battery life, light, and with probably the best laptop keyboard I've ever used.

Install crouton and hot key between ChromeOS and Xubuntu; ChromeOS when I'm just messing around, Xubuntu for programming.

10/10, would Chromebook again.
>>

>Like I said, the Toshiba Chromebook 2 CAN NOT run GNU/Linux without Crouton.

There's a SeaBIOS build for it that's fully Windows 10 compatible, let alone Linux.

Personally, I own Dell's 13 inch Chromebook because the shit's built well, has great battery life, and uses standard 42mm m.2 SSDs. Just waiting for a finished SeaBIOS build with backlight and trackpad support. In the meantime I've got a limited Legacy Boot enabled that works for Gallium OS and surprisingly Alpine Linux.

I mean, I get your meaning, but your "must be able to use my distro's installer and my own special snowflake kernel that only contains hardware support for stuff I'm not even running" requirement is an unnecessary restriction for everything save the sole case where you need to use Cisco anyconnect, and only for a little while longer at that. It's also still easier than updating the ram in a macbook

I understand the complaint about the sd card, but that can be easily mitigated with an external HDD or SSD and luks for all your "extra storage" needs.

perfect for normies to use as facebook machines and general browsing. You can even go as far as doing light office work too.
Depends on the model you have you could use crouton to run a distro and have a full fledged OS.
Got a Dell Chromebook 11 2015 on a discount from amazon last holidays for someone who wanted to browse the web only. It runs for 10 hours no problems, it's well built for something that was 160 bucks and the one using it is pretty happy with it. That model also is not shit, has a celeron with 4gbs of ram and 32gbs of storage.
If you want to spend that kinda of cash on a laptop go with a thinkpad, you can get one used near that price and you can run whatever you want in it. if you just want to browse the web and need great battery life, go with something similar to the one I told you.

Crouton basically chroots your existing chromeos install and throws another *NIX alongside it.

> now you have to update two parallel systems.

I had to use the Debian nonfree ISO on a USB to get wireless to play nice during install.

I followed the archlinux wiki instructions to change BIOS to boot direct without going into chromeos recovery mode. That took about 15 minutes to read and perform.

I was going to with the latest xubuntu but for whatever reason the ISO wouldn't boot properly, i can't remember the error but it was an unrecoverable one. This happened with all the Ubuntu flavors for me.

I did the arch install with zero problems on it just to see but I prefer Debian.

I actually liked chromeos but the file xfer on smb sucks shit and video play... May as well been reenacting with puppets it was so bad.

Regarding Debian, everything worked oobob, touchpad, sound, gfx u name it except wireless (nonfree ISO) but that worked fine too.

If I parse your superior school system's taught english correctly, you buy your electronics off amazon instead of local outlets, right? How exactly do you get things cheaper "because of taxes" abroad? You'll anyway pay your local VAT when you check out at amazon or at any major store, as is the law. Unless you're a vat exempt entity, and that I doubt.

If you buy your shit outside of EU, you'll anyway pay customs fees and vat when post office confiscates your shit till you pay up.

I have the Toshiba 2 one
Pretty light, completely silent except for some coil whine when it's charging. The screen is pretty decent, 1080p IPS.
The storage is really small though. Mind that.
As for power, I don't know what the fuck people have against a low power laptop. It means that the battery will last longer, coupled with no fan and no HDD, the thing outlives anything else in my class by a goddamn landslide, and it can still do FEM almost as fast as anything for the practice exercises.
If you want to get rid of ChromeOS, you have to open it up carefully and cut a part of the radiator loose which acts as a hardware write protection.
