What's your excuse?

Nice, but if you're driving that on the road you're a fuckboi.

I can do both

same, it's good to be well rounded.
my weakest area of repair knowledge is very small scale electronics at the board level

Because I got tired of wrenching on shitboxes and bought a 2014 and no longer need to do anything.

Who am I kidding, I miss my shitty Hondas.

fucking blebs

Only abos do that.

Former mechanic here.

The problem these days isn't so much knowing how to do it as it is the fact that everything is so computerized that diagnosing and fixing many issues requires a ridiculously expensive proprietary diagnostic computer.
>>
>>54045300
I can fix basic stuff like electrics and oil changes but anything other then that i have to go the mechanics as my car is low as fuck and my jacks at home wont let me get under the bastard.

My mechanic is cheap too only charges $50-100 for labor because im a poorfag millennial
>>
But i do, i build my own shit
>>
>>54045471
he was talking about cars, not gas tanks
>>
>>54045475

You're a shitty liar. OBD2 readers can be had for $10 on Amazon. You're a fucking loser who's never even changed his oil.
>>

One time my radiator fan came off spindle, fucked up my radiator, shroud, and serpentine belt. I managed to fix it enough to drive it around, but I had to get someone else to put in a new radiator.

I can't change my own oil.

I'm fucked when madmax is real.
>>
>>54045475
Yea that's pretty much the worst part, especially concerning ecu/pcm.
Blew 2 ecus on my civic, then it kept frying the keys and using the immobilizer, sold it soon after.

>>54045541
Obd2 doesn't cover half the shit you actually need to diagnose serious problems.
It is a very useful tool for diagnosing little things and helping you on track to the problem.

The serious software is usually dealership only, unless aftermarket hardware.
>>
>>54045300
But anon, I have an Automotive Service Technician Red Seal.

>Obd2 doesn't cover half the shit you actually need to diagnose serious problems.
it's so irritating
>find code
>oh good it's not the "general fault" code this time
>google the code
>"general fault"
>computer has dozens of "general faults" that are seemingly random
reeeeee
>>
>>54045541
Nope, I was a full-time tech at a highly regarded shop that specialized in track-focused BMWs and Porsches.

OBD2 doesn't even begin to cover a lot of the shit on post-05 or so cars, especially with stuff like BMWs.

We used an Autologic at my old shop, and there were numerous diagnostics that only something like it could do, as well as many actual maintenance procedures. For example, the only way to properly bleed brakes on E46 and newer M3s is to run a power bleed routine, which can only be activated through a diagnostic computer. Having real-time data traces is also critical for properly diagnosing and tuning their engines, and even a nice OBDII reader (we had a doesn't provide enough information. Many cars also won't let you disable warning messages and things like that without an advanced diagnostic computer, and you often need to manually reset or adjust parameters after replacing components.

So yeah, either you're not a mechanic, only work on '90s cars, or some shitty lube or tire tech or something.
>>
>>54045646
And see, this exactly an example of why OBD2 readers are shit.

Plug an Autologic or a dealership computer into that same port, and it'll tell you exactly what's broken and often what's wrong with it, or give you information that lets you figure it out. (For example, when the OBD2 just says "general fault," the Autologic will say "Crank Position Sensor - out of range signal detected." or "VANOS solenoid not responding.")

I have always worked on my own cars. I build motorcycles as a hobby as well.

Just put a new camshaft in my ktm last weekend.
>>
Every car repair I've ever done myself is been a result of googling the problem and finding a forum post or YouTube video that explains how to solve it.
>>
>>54045300
I doesn't know how to fix my llfe, to be honest
>>

>>
>>54045300
So long as I keep computer running, I'll be able to gain access to resources that help me fix car. If I can fix computer, I can fix anything.
>>
Jokes on you.

I don't know how to fix either.
>>
>>54045300
but I just replaced my timing chain cover gasket. hopefully gonna put a new shifter seat in tomorrow so it stops pooping out of first gear
>>
>>54045541
I'd ask if you could really be this retarded, but then I remembered where I am.

OBD doesn't cover most of the cars communication systems. Many cars, especially at the higher end, had special diagnostic ports from about 99 to about '05. (2000 BMW 540, for example).

Telemetry data is everything.

>I do, I just don't have the tools or space to do it in with my current home.

Yes same goes for me, I'm trained car mechanic, working as sysadmin now. Thats literally the only valid reason. No space or no tools (including those Laptop or PC testers for the ECU without them you are fucked nowadays, you cant even reset an oil change anymore without theses pieces of shit)

This.

besides if the mechanic fucks up its under warranty most of the time if the parts new and the place isnt dodgy as fuck.

A great mechanic is such a rare thing so glad i found one.

We had a similar one in Afghanistan. Right side drive and stick. Drove the fuck out of it.
>>
>>54045475

True

But you can buy clones that do all of this shit from China.

My 07 Mazdaspeed 6 is all OBD but my best mate has a 99 MB C200 that requires it's own diagnostic port and that. He bought all the stuff required from China and has a pirated VMD image that does everything.

So if there's a will there's a way
>>
>>54045346
This, but also
>Engines have a lot more parts
>They require more specialized tools e.g. engine lifts, car lifts

I can change brake rotors/calipers/drums/shoes and tires and wire up a stereo and shit just fine tho, and change my oil, etc. Basically anything that can be done with relatively basic tools.
