In about 2012, on my last PC, I got tricked by one of those .exe that had a unicode filename which obscured the true file extension. Had to clean that shit up while frantically killing processes manually before they downloaded more shit. Fun times. Current PC? Nothing yet.

Pirated VMWare about 5 years ago. But nothing actually came of it. It kept trying to run something from the user folder, but EMET was preventing it from executing whatever kind of memory attack it wanted to perform.
>>
>>54041540
7 Years ago give or take.
>>
>>54041708
CryptoPrevent will stop shit from even running from the user folder. Try it out.
>>
Never.
>>
>>54041721
It wasn't a crypto, at least to my knowledge. Nothing was even able to run.

I only realize there was something there when I was looking through the event viewer logs one day and noticed this program constantly trying to run and failing a few hundred times a day.

I'm assuming it was EMET, but it's possible it was the fact I have UAC set to its highest setting as well and wasn't able to elevate its process with a whitelisted application like calc.exe because those applications are no longer UAC whitelisted at the highest level.

So yeah, don't know what it was trying to do, but it failed at doing it. I was getting a new SSD anyways so I decided how was the time to do a clean install.

Over 10 years ago or so. Last time I got malware was from cracked FM 2013 install in 2008 or so but it was pretty easy to get rid of, just annoying.
>>
i had my credit card number stolen about 7 or 8 years ago, and it was used in another country half way across the world, so i'm pretty sure i must have had a virus on my desktop around then, unless it was skimmed or harvested from some shitty website that stored the number illegally or something. never actually found a virus, but i blew away the OS away just be sure.

i've since switched to linux about 5 years ago anyway
>>
Wasn't a virus but somebody nicked my entire CSGO inventory because I didn't have a password for Teamviewer access. They could've fucked up my entire life but they only wanted some cosmetic, useless shit for a video game I got back anyways by sending an email to the Steam support.

The one and only time I've gotten a virus (since I started computering in ~1996) was about 5 years ago when I clicked a link on /b/ (I knew it was fishy, but thought my Java was up-to-date enough to be fairly safe... yeah, right) that exploited some Java bug and started trying to infect everything on my PC. A few seconds in, I realized what was happening and pulled the plug (literally), then booted linux and used f-prot and clamav to clean up what was infected... deleted like 20 replaceable executables and was fine after that.

Since then, I don't even install Java anymore, and just flat out avoid anything that requires it.

TLDR: fuck Java

probably 2008 or 2009, nasty sality32
and before that probably in 2004/2005, same sality32 crap
both times because i rushed while getting stuff installed (the most recent one was trying to download the free/cli version of ms/t-sql server cause the ms servers were being slow)

before these occurences i used xp+ie6+spybotsearch&destroy+norton and pc was always clean (2003 or so), then decided to use firefox (pre release) without any antivirus ever since

fuck sality32

2 years ago on my 1 year old windows install i got a opencl virus that burnt out my 6970 and overvolted my motherboard and blew that too as well as fried some ram sticks for good measure.

had to chuck the whole pc except the psu and case and ssd everything else was fried.

god w7 was a insecure pos i wont run it anymore because of how insecure it is its like xp not worth it.

Upgraded to windows 10 7 months ago never looked back

Holy fuck. I always wondered if that was possible, either a virus that overvolts shit until it is fried or overclocks until it is cooked.

I only ever got virus on purpose. Its been decades. There is a guy at work who gets them all the time "Shes hot for me and in my area!" "DONT FUCKING CLICK ON IT FRANK!!!"

oh wait no, it was companies internal software that obviously never went through QA and wasn't caught by the non-existent full scan mechanism.

Yes its possible there was a vbs script a few years ago that would max out your volume, prevent closing it or shutting down your pc, prevent lowering the volume and play the MLP theme song. I think it would also inject its self into your startup folder. Absolutely diabolical.

How would you really know? At the moment, I have no idea if some very well hidden keylogger/whatever is running or not.

Those adware extensions have a tendency to download more shit, which in turn downloads more, until you have legit malware on there as well as all the adware toolbar crap.

2 days ago a site redirected me to my router page, tried to log in with the default password (that I can't change for whatever reason).

the logs indicate no change has been made, but I'm paranoid.

anybody got an input on what could've happened?

2003. I plugged my desktop into the ethernet port in ny student apt. I thought I was on the school network and that I was safe. After two weeks my computer became unusable.
Turns out the apartments used time warner business class for internet access. I wiped the computer, reinstalled windows, and black ice firewall/IDS. I was floored at the nonstop port scans and other attacks.

A few months ago. I lent a friend one of my old laptops. In a span of 2 days they managed to get 2 root kits and 79 other infections, they also started using IE because they some how broke chrome.

I need to figure out a way to weaponize this person.

How do people get viruses?
One time I installed an XP VM and tried to download every fake firefox and chrome link I could find, clicking every fake download button and following endless chains of links on shitty porn sites.

No virus.

A year or two before i started using NoScript back in 2006 I think? So around 2004. I got some ransomware that would open the CD tray and pop up a text file asking for money to fix it. Google found a better solution in less than a minute.

My mother on the other hand continued to use IE on her own computer until she switched to Chrome a few years ago, and she'd get like 2-3 viruses a year.

When μtorrent got hijacked, I noticed it wasn't signed, but I thought: "What the hell, shit doesn't even ask for administrator privilege".

All it did was drop one of them fake security suites and have it run on boot.

I don't even remember how many years ago it was.
