How do you like the HD800S.
I listened to the HD650, 600 and 800 side by side and ended up leaving with a HD800. I want the signature of the 650 with the soundstage and imaging of the 800, is that what the HD800S tries to be?

The S is still closer to the 800 than the 650 to me, it just seems like they were trying to make it a bit more tolerable rather than being like the 650. They didn't have a 600 when I went to listen to some headphones a few days ago though. I'm thinking of taking my S in to compare direct since they didn't have them in stock.

>>54038671
What is even the point of such question if not to bait people who like the headphones you complimented/bashed?
Any retard can do their own research and find that out.
I figured the impedance was directly tied to a players ability to power the drivers. I've used a couple of DT770's 32 ohm for this reason.
Yesterday I got the HD650's and they seem to be 300 ohm, but my phone is still able to drive these at very reasonable levels, and it's gotten me to wonder wether I've missed something.
Can somebody explain this using pleb terms? I've tried to read up on it but so far I've been unable to make sense of my phone both driving a 32 ohm and a 300 ohm at reasonable levels with no amp involved.

They're not. They just have wealthy parents that work a lot for affording expensive gear for their spoiled children.
>>54039734
my step dad bought me some HD800S recently :3
>>54038022
The 800S is an 800 with a helmholtz resonator stuck backwards into the center of the wave guide. A resonator can either amplify or attenuate a specific frequency of sound depending on its orientation, and Senn designed it specifically to reduce the 6~7K spike of the 800. It seemingly also has the side-effect of adding some distortion to the bass, making it seem warmer. Besides that it comes with a balanced cable and is a different color.
It's possible to make your own analog to the resonator with some basic materials, sharp tools and a steady hand, as I did with mine. Because the HD800 is half the price of the 800S where I live, the modding route was a no-brainer, otherwise I might have budgeted for the S just for the balanced cable.
Mod chops a good 5db off that peak I reckon. Not that I had a problem with the sound beforehand, but I was curious about the effects, and immediately the whole range of sound felt more balanced because your attention is no longer fixated on the high frequencies, and does so without veiling or muddying the sound either. Props to the French dude who bought an 800S just to learn what makes it tick and developed the mod.
>>54039664

>>54039664
put a $20 bill in a jar once a week and in a year you already have a grand to spend on whatever.
I'm not rich, but I can have a lot of the stuff I want because I cut down in other areas that people may often not even realize they're just throwing away cash on.
The gaming kiddies on here don't hesitate to drop like two grand on a gaming PC that will be obsolete in a few years, or at least effectively depreciate to the point where that money is wasted, but headphones, assuming they're quality, may last for decades.
I listen to mine every single day, so why shouldn't I deserve something better?

>>54042549
Seconded. MSR7 is GOAT.
Somebody mentioned before Moffat got called out on his shit somewhere, anyone got a link to that?
>>54045133
The "problem" with the m50 comes from the fact that years ago (before we even had the /hpg/) it was a rival to the MDR v6 and /g/ liked both very much, enough tho argue about it in every single headphone thread (pic related is from back then), in fact to many the M50 was the "bood-non-poor-fag" option, it was also when the terms "treble rape" and " bass canons" started getting so much use.
Many reviewers praised them as a great headphone for the price (about 10 bucks more than V6), but as the popularity of the M50 rose so did its prices, still, 20 bucks more than a v6 wasn't much, people kept buying it anyway, after all the reviews said they were great for the price, these buyers also ended up making reviews, prices kept raising and people kept buying without knowing how much it was worth, with so much sucess eventually Audio Technica released a new model, which was essentially the same thing with a detachable cable for more than 150 bucks, from that price people would either go with K550, DT770 or the much cheaper V6 (or MDR7506), and that's for closed-back only, so the /hpg/ started to see that it was not good for the price and you know how things work here, people either love something or hate it with their every breath, now the prices are much more fair, but with many other options more showing up and so much time of accumulated bad rap the hate remains.
And yes, i agree, i too bet most of them haven't ever tested it.

never quite understood what the graph right under the frequency response indicated
is it supposed to tell you if the audio loses loudness at certain volumes or something? I vaguely remember that the lines were ideally supposed to be flat
>>54047951
I think if the line curves up at a certain frequency, that means that frequency requires more power to be at the same level of volume as other frequency ranges, which means that range of frequency will sound quieter to you.
if the line is flat, that means the frequency range across the board should sound like it's at the same level of volume
>>54047977
>I think if the line curves up at a certain frequency, that means that frequency requires more power to be at the same level of volume as other frequency ranges, which means that range of frequency will sound quieter to you.
You're on the right track, but this is actually a description of the frequency response itself. The reason there's dips and spikes in the frequency response is because it takes more or less power respectively to get to a certain volume. The impedance and phase stuff is something you'd use to figure out how your source equipment will affect the frequency response. On something with a 0 ohm output impedance, you'd get the graph shown in the frequency response section. On something with a 60 ohm output impedance, even if the source equipment is 100% neutral and uncolored, you'll get a slightly different frequency response if the electrical impedance and phase for your headphones aren't a flat line.

>pic related?
That's a guide someone else worked on, not me.
>>54046514
You are free to think of whatever about the guide but I'd rather people did not find their information on a single website, especially not IF.
If you have suggestions to the guide, I'll consider them and change stuff if anons agree on it. I'm personally not satisfied on the descriptions and I'm thinking of changing them into simple bullet points describing the headphones' sound signature and features instead of the somewhat subjective approach of what is good and bad it is now.
The point of the guide is to collect a list of quality headphones for people to consider if they are in a market for one. There's no universally best option as everyone's preferences and needs vary. It's also really hard to find worthwhile information about headphones if you are newbie to the market and have never researched for them. And if you are about to drop hundreds on a pair of headphones, you might want to make sure you are making a good purchase. The guide is supposed to aid with this.
>>54048814
I don't browse /hpg/ anymore, but I've come up with suggestions for the guide in the past.

Somewhat this >>54049371 and Tyll talks about concepts he doesn't understand. I don't like his non-standard compensation curve, the inclusion of square waves in the measurements and the "subjective-objective" -take on audio. His subjective reviews provide nothing of value for me and I personally happen to disagree with him on these impressions in a lot of cases. I appreciate the measurement data he provides however but that could be represented better and explained properly/correctly. He is better than the average audio reviewer on the internet and that's almost completely due to the effort of providing and doing measurements. The other clutter on his site like the Katz's Corner is worthles as well as the occasional Head-Fi -tier amplifier reviews.
What headphones do you guys use for the gym? I always see everyone use Beats.
>>54049702
I use my Stax SR009. They sound great out of the Galaxy S7 my mom bought me some time ago.
>>54049505
>I don't like his non-standard compensation curve
I don't see how it's an issue. There's enough difference between measurement setups that you shouldn't be comparing one site or person's measurements to another. Within one site's measurements, if you're trying to figure out what headphones sound like without a reference point, you're dumb. And if you DO have a reference point, i.e. you own headphones that have been measured by that site, the compensation curve is irrelevant since you can compare the measurements for the headphones you have to a new set of measurements to get a feel for how they sound.
>the inclusion of square waves in the measurements
Seriously? Sure, it's essentially the frequency response in a different form, and it's useless to people who don't know how to read one, but it's a useful visualization for people who do. And guess what? It bypasses the compensation part too.
>I personally happen to disagree with him on these impressions in a lot of cases.
People are going to have different preferences. What I appreciate about Tyll is that he knows what he likes, and he's consistent with his evaluation. If you share his tastes, just pick a favorite of his. If you like more treble, pick something he thinks has a bit too much. Subjective impressions (other than your own) are pretty worthless, but as far as they go I'd easily pick his as the best.
>that could be represented better and explained properly/correctly
Aside from the short bit of explanation he adds in on every review (on the measurements page), there's a couple articles on the site explaining how to read measurements. It's not perfect, but good enough for a layman.
I do agree that you should use multiple sources, but as far as a single source goes, I'd put InnerFidelity at the top.
>>54049702

>>54049813
Forgot to say: every measurement sheet he has includes the raw frequency response too. So if you don't like the compensation, just use the raw data instead.

>There's enough difference between measurement setups that you shouldn't be comparing one site or person's measurements to another.
They shouldn't be large below a certain frequency range, this is why there are supposed to be standards that are followed.
I've felt Tyll's gear to be suspect for a while, even as far as simulators have issues replicating human features.
>it's essentially the frequency response in a different form
That's the impulse response. The square wave response is something different. At times, Tyll seems to conflate arbitrary square wave discontinuities with the impulse response.
>and it's useless to people who don't know how to read one, but it's a useful visualization for people who do
Even if you know how to make one, extracting useful information is very difficult. It takes more time to break down a square wave than it does to read three or four separate charts that tell you the same thing and more.

guys?
I've been looking at some guides and I was gonna go for the Sony MDR-V6 which all the guides list for costing $65, now I live in the UK and I know we get screwed on electronics a lot so I was expecting to pay a bit more, but at worst I thought it would be the old dollar to pound trick. But nope, I can't find a pair for under a hundred quid. Even in America they're costing a hundred dollars. What's wit the price jump? Have they stopped production or something?
The MDR7506s are on Amazon for 73 quid, how do they compare? I'm thinking them or Sennheiser HD280s, any others that are recommended?

7506 is the same except you get a gold plug and a better warranty. I believe they have stopped making the V6 so that might be why they're becoming more expensive. I got mine in the UK in 2009 for about £50.
If you have an issue Sony isn't replacing the V6 with the more expensive 7506 they'll give you a V600 or something shit.

Anyone know how do they compare to the HD280s? The 280 is a bit more than I want to spend really, but I'm willing to fork out if it's a significant upgrade. I'll add that I'll be using them with my ipod mostly, but also a bit on my laptop for music listening and occasionally messing around in a DAW, and maybe plug them into my amp while playing guitar and bass. But mostly ipod and I do have a Fiio amp if it's needed.
Also how do they compare in terms of durability and ease of repair? Also I use the bus a lot so if either of them leak sound too much it would be nice to know. I've heard the HD280s have a pretty good seal.

>>54050703
>No, no it definitely isn't.
I don't know what you're thinking, but a summation of odd ordered harmonics with varying intensity is very different from exciting a system at all possible frequencies at once at equal level.
The latter defines the system's response.
>>54051863
>exciting a system at a lot of different frequencies at once at different levels is very different from exciting a system at all possible frequencies at once at equal level.
Different, no doubt, but I wouldn't say VERY different. Measurement of either will give you data on the frequency response and phase response of the system. An impulse response gives a more complete picture, but is even harder to read visually than a square wave.
