you can still find refurbed clip+ on ebay for $35

I bought two a couple months ago, they look and feel brand new except for the "REFURB" printed on the bottom surface. I don't look at that surface anyways so I don't care. I get the stated 15 hr battery life and the front screen panel came with the little... "fake display" type sticker on it and no scratches, so I'm guessing they just put in a new battery and used a new shell

9/10 would buy again. Just wished they'd let me know about the REFURB print ahead of time

>carrying a whole fucking smartphone as your PMP

The Ruizu x02 is a decent option (stated 80 hr battery life, never actually tested it from 100 to 0 but I get at least 30+ hour runtimes) but it can't run rockbox and the difference between $15 and $35 doesn't seem that big a deal to me, the rockbox features are worth it

Is Rockbox dead? There hasn't been a new release or much development activity since 2013.
>>
iPod with SD card upgrade
>>
>>54027596

Second-gen Ipod Nanos are rockbox-able, I picked up a 2Gig silver one off ebay for $25.

The 2Gigs doesn't go that far for FLACs obviously, but you can fit a metric FUCKTON of sequenced music formats (.xm, .mod, midi, .sid etc), good when you're in the mood for some bloops.

The real reason I got it though is for sneakily playing Pokemon Crystal at work and it works great for that. Just beat the first gym leader yesterday at work, trained up my geodude a bit today.

SEMI-EXHAUSTIVE ROCKBOY POKEMON REVIEWS:

Clip+ : Rockboy works and runs full speed + good sound, but the ~16 pixels on the bottom of the GB screen wrap around to the top of the clip+ screen, and it's fucking difficult reading text or telling what's going on on a 128x64 monochrome screen with no aliasing.

Clip Zip: Runs full speed, full speed sound. Quite playable, but the 96x96 unaliased screen makes reading text difficult unless you already know the game well. Hardware buttons are nice though.

e280: Runs slow, like half speed even on monochrome Pokemon Red w/ no sound. Enough pixels for 1:1 mapping but the slowness kills it for me.

Fuze v2: Runs full speed? I forget. Has enough pixels for 1:1 mapping of the screen, but the colors are all fucked up. Probably fixable through a patch or some shit but idk how to patch raw C + ARM asm. Colors kinda ruin it for me, all fucked up even on monochrome (2-bit) mode IIRC

Fuze+ : Full speed + sound, 1:1 mapping , but the only controls are touchpad based and this thing's not really an advantage over a smartphone.
>>
>>54027732
It's not dead, but all their target devices are discontinued and becoming harder to find.
With no new ports being introduced, rockbox will quickly become irrelevant.
>>

>>
oh and BEWARE!!!!!!

THE "SANSA CLIP SPORT" and "CLIP JAM" are TOTAL FUCKING IMPOSTORS that use a different, cheaper SoC and are not supported by rockbox. I guess they still work as microSD PMPs, but without rockbox why even live on this gay earth

>>
>>54027759
Where do you get your sequenced music from? I already have HVSC and keygen music library, anything else to check out?
>>
>>54027807

honestly it's a neat gimmick to show your friends the splash screen, but not really too enjoyable to play. text is basically unreadable and every area looks the same/ hard to navigate, especially since I have the 1/4 of the screen wrapping around issue. You basically have to have played the game recently and have it memorized where to go etc.

This guy has the older version (no sd slot???), and without the wraparound issue it looks sort of playable:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXum29VBtAk

Again, I'm assuming the wraparound issue is an "easy" fix, but that's assuming you're already a lv 99 freetard to begin with
>>
>>54027866

mostly soulseek, I run a search for "keygen music" or "xm" and then if I see a user with more than a handful of results I go "browse files".

I just wish there was an "auto skip to next track after $SECONDS" function for all the sequenced formats, it gets annoying having to manually skip forward each track for the ~60% of files that are set up to auto-loop
>>

clip+ and clip zip are pure flukes of engineering
the new ones are cheaper to make (which corporate likes) and have better battery life (which customers like), and for everyone involved, that's all they care about.

yea I'm not sure how or why they discontinued the product ... pretty fucking stupid

The clip+ is a product that does not exist any more.
Rockbox isn't going to be made for any new devices any time soon.
If someone would port rockbox to the Ruizu X02 that'd be fucking fantastic.

As it is now my own clip+ is getting short on battery life and I think there's going to be some nigrigging in its future as I replace the battery with a fairly unsuitably sized one.

Anyone know what voltage the battery in the clip+ runs at?
I hope it's 3.7

If you want something cheap with a similar form factor I would recommend the AGPTek G02. If you need a screen they have one with a screen now but I've never used it.

I've gone through a lot of cheap mp3 players because I'm a long-distance runner and this is the best one I've found that is <$25.

Before I used this one I just bought a handful of those cheap shuffle clones off of aliexpress for like a $1 each and just swapped a microsd card between them when they ran out of juice. The SQ is pretty terrible on them though.

Yeah the scaling sucks ass on monochrome, but you can do something about the stupid wraparound. Start your ROM, hit power, choose reset. Notice how you now have a random different wraparound amount. Repeat a few times until it's very small.

That and just stop playing GameBoy on such a microscopic screen after the novelty of it wears off.

Real talk, if you already own a phone that has a media player on it, is there any reason to have a separate device to listen to music?

Most smartphones even have equalizers and really good apps to play music, so explain it to me because I just don't get it.

I've owned a SC+ and sure it was good but I feel it's just highly outdated now alongside other one-trick pony devices like it.
>>
>>54053660
People who exercise tend to regard a dedicated player as a good idea. The huge value of smartphones and their slipperyness makes them ideal for slipping out of pockets. Fumbling for the controls is a pain in the dick too.

Battery life is another issue. Storage space can be too- you want free space on your phone, and a music collection will eat that up.
>>

No way that route would cost you three times the price of a fiio and an equal SD card.

Also where the fuck do I get a 200GB SD card? That's not a standard size.

As far as I know, the 1tb mod you can do to an iPod is where PMPs cap currently. Too bad such storage isn't practical.

one thing I liked about the sansa clip, it didn't have an butt ugly UI featuring blurry text and compressed jpegs straight out of 2002

i love the simple sharp bright blue/yellow pixel screen

it's beautiful

sound quality. most phones have garbage DACs in them

battery life. you need your phone for communication. if you're going to listen to 2-5 hours of music, why put the drain on your phone?

Get a phone with decent audio output and just buy this to keep the battery up.

Really disagree with this.
My Sansa clip sounds worse than my Note 3.

Is it really so bad to put the product name on the product?

God, that thing would piss me off so much every time I looked at it. It looks like it has basically an edge to edge screen, but in reality it only takes up like 60% of that space.

Anyway, my Clip+ is still going strong after a few years. I only use it for audiobooks, though. I use my phone (spotify) or a Photon Q (my own library, used less frequently now) for music. The clip broke off awhile back, though, so it doesn't do a whole lot of clipping anymore. Works fine in the pocket, and is amazingly slim now.

And for all the people whining about the need for a small player like the Clip+: There's nothing I hate more than having my phone in my pocket, banging against my leg and getting all wet when I am mowing the lawn, doing yard work, or riding bike.

samsung is one of the OEMs with good sound quality. apart from apple there is really only samsung. HTC is supposedly stepping up the bar though

I had the same issue, fixed it with a soldering iron.
Just open 'er up and see what's come loose.

I glued a peg to the back of my clip+. First I shaved off the knobbly plastic bits to make a flat surface, then I glued a peg to the back.
It now clips again, even if it looks a bit silly.

I used one of these and some fishing line.
"Ghetto" approaches a reasonable description.
