Why do people upgrade so often?

When was the last time Intel actually offered significant improvements other than ram speed? Was it the jump from netburst to core2?
>>

Good for me though, I got an i7 870 3 years ago for the price of an i3. 4c8t, oc to 4.3GHz.

You can half the size of transistors and put twice as many on a CPU but trying to put more power through to make anything more actually happen will still melt the metal. Iunno.

I refuse to update untill I can replace my 2500k for the same price with an 8 core cpu! skylake is a decent upgrade, if you want moar corez just get a 5820k and OC it. 6 cores with 15mb of cache is going to be relevant for a very long time, and x99 mobos will still be available at '''reasonable''' prices for some time because of broadwell-e coming soon.
>>
Honestly right now I'm considering upgrading my i7 920, not because the new CPUs are significantly better but because I want usb 3.1 and sata 3.0.

Skylake is not a decent upgrade after so many years. It's in performance basically Haswell with ddr4. Jewtel has been lazy and jewish because AMD allowed them to get away with it. And if this is the case, then I'm going to jew the jews and refuse to accept their meager upgrades.
>>
>>54018246
It's like you fuckers believe Intel has a secret back room where they hide superior alien tech, only releasing minor changes to maximize profits. If Intel could actually do what you unreasonably demand, they would smash amd, and have 100% of the market. Why wouldn't they? It makes no sense, from a investors perspective, and from a CEO also. You have been spoiled by the rapid advancement of the past, and still demand the same results from massive developmental achievements.
>>
>>54017657
But they are significantly better than what you have.
>>

It's at least 5% better per clock, 10% in some applications. That's basically the same increase between Ivy and Haswell.

Single-core performance gets hamstring'd to account for thermal efficiency. Despite the prevalence of multi-core processors, most programs are still not optimized for parallel processing on physical cores, let-alone logical cores/hyper threading.

Meaning, most individual cores inside a modern package are running at 70% of maximum potential--almost as a rule--compared to single cores from years ago, and still manage to edge out 5-10% in raw compute performance while improving almost every other facet and adding new features.

If you want to create a very constrained box that reduces the total package of what newer CPU's offer, that's your prerogative, I guess.

Adjusted for inflation you are getting less performance for your money out of Skylake than Sandy Bridge. It's ridiculously bad.

His point is exactly what you stated. We've almost reached a level of everything "just werking" the way it is intended without the CPU being a limiting factor. If you own Sandy Bridge or later, you probably have a PC good enough to do what 90% of people would ever need to do.
>>
>>54019105
People shouldn't have bought that Prescott to begin with.

You know what's worse than the situation now where a new CPU gives you 10% better IPC at most?

Intel released Prescott which actually had 10% WORSE IPC than the previous generation. You can't make this shit up.
>>
I usually upgrade every 5 years or so.

With that said, there are more reasons to upgrade your CPU than raw processing power. Memory support, PCI-E lanes, virtualization, etc.
>>
>>54019145
>muh IPC
IPC is a design choice. Lower IPC can translate into higher clocks, moar cores or simply cheaper manufacture.
Inversely higher IPC can actually reduce overall performance in favor of high power efficiency.

/g/ I need your help so badly, and I'm extremely glad this thread is here.

I recently started building my mini-itx travel desktop, for going to friends houses or doing overnight travel for work in a reasonable area.

anyway

I decided that the best way to do it was to put my old desktop parts in my new travel build. So I decided to upgrade cpu, gpu, ram etc in my main desktop. I bought

>DDR4 ram 16gb 3000
>i5 6600k
>new mobo
>(waiting for Nvidia to drop new gpus in june)
to upgrade my main computer

and I'm moving my

>DDR3 8gb
>i5 3570k
>gtx 970
along with a new 1155 chipset mobo I bought

into my travel build

My question is this, after searching far and wide everyone seems to be saying that 6600k isn't any real upgrade to 3570k, so I was going to just return the 1150 atx mobo and the 1155 itx mobo, and just buy a 1150 itx mobo and put the 6600k + DDR4 ram in the travel build (since everyone says it wouldn't be noticeable), but videos like that one make doubt.

I would love to keep major performance gains to my desktop if possible.

(please excuse any mistakes, I'm a terrible typist)
>>
>>54019229
Prescott didn't result in any of these things.

It was lower IPC, hotter, more power hungry and clocks no better.

Seems like a waste of money unless you are really going to make good use of that meme ITX build. For your every day desktop usage you will not really see a difference, and as other anons pointed out, depending on the games you like to play you may notice some difference between the 3570k and the 6600k, but it's not like the difference between playable and unplayable. At this point, I'd just put the 3570k in the ITX build as you had planned. That'd be powerful enough for LAN stuff.

If I were you I probably would have bought something better than the 6600k for your desktop.

i7s are not completely useless for all games but the majority will not benefit from hyperthreading. No, not be a retard putting words in my mouth. Intel is just allowed to be lazy on the desktop market, and waste our time and money by letting their shitty iGPU take up more and more of the CPU die. They could easily put in 8 cores for the same price if they ripped out the iGPU, but they don't because AMD is retarded and has no money. So intel can just ignore the desktop market and give us weaker cpu's with oversized crap iGPU's most never use, as they are developing these things anyway for the laptop market. And if we want more cores, jewtel points toward their overpriced x99 platform.

It's the same reason why they stopped soldering the CPU's after Sandy Bridge, and instead used the most crappy TIM they could find to safe a cent or two on every CPU they sell. "You don't like our hot chips with crappy TIn? Well goyim, perhaps you can try the risky delidding...but would you not rather buy our server leftovers? Look at the 5820k, it has 6 cores! And we soldered it like we used to do in the mainstream!!"

Intel is a company, so they jew us because they ahve zero competition. I don't believe they keep alien tech hidden because they are jewing us, they just no longer care about mainstream desktop as they ahve zero competition. So we get no more cores, and more and more of the CPU being taken in by a crappy iGPU. And intel just laughs and tells us to get an x99. Mainly because we have no choice.

Newsflash: Skylake (and its chipset) isn't that great. They were designed to be thrown into the latest overpriced Alienware by Dell brick and mortar PC shitbox. Real PC enthusiasts have already been on HEDT chipsets for a few years now.

I'd be very curious to know how much, if any, of the boost the 6700K sees is from higher bandwidth DDR4. I would've liked to see something like 4.4 Haslel with 2400MHz DDR3 against 4.4 Skylel with 2400MHz DDR4.
>>
I'm fine with my i3 2120 and it was just 100 bucks 4 years ago.
>>
>>54020219
>2400MHz DDR3 against 2400MHz DDR4
...you DO realize that the higher bandwidth of DDR4 comes from having higher clocks as a standard, right?

And anyway, for general use the boost is jackshit. The main benefit comes from having lower voltage and therefore lower power consumption.
>>
>>54020402
>...you DO realize that the higher bandwidth of DDR4 comes from having higher clocks as a standard, right?
Did you actually read my post and think for 5s?
>>
>>54020438
Did you? 2400 MHz DDR3 has the exact same bandwidth as 2400 MHz DDR4.
>>
>>54020554
Which was exactly the fucking point, make the bandwidth the same to see if the 6700k performance increase was due to the CPU or the memory, holy fuck.

I guess the answer to my question was that you did in fact not stop to think for 5s.
>>
>>54020219
The smarter comparison would be to downclock Skylake memory to DDR4-1600 and see how much difference that makes.
Massively overclocking DDR3 doesn't tell you anything
>>
>>54019803
I have a Xeon E3
It has a very slight improvement in minimum frames. Nothing that should make you pay $100 more just to have more threads, if all you care about is gaming. Most people will be fine dipping to 50 FPS instead of dipping to 53 FPS.
>>
>>54020640
The bandwidth of ddr4 shines at 3k and above. That's when it can really start to make noticeable improvements.

Last decent bump was the second generation core I series, everything after that was a small increase in IPC with either a very small bump in clocks or a clock regression. A current gen core will still be a significant upgrade over the 2xxx because there are four generations of incremental upgrades.
>>
>>54014866
i5 2500k here. Can't justify 300-400 to upgrade just yet... maybe in a few generations.
>>
>>54014866
>i5-2500K passmark score: 6453
>i7-4790K passmark score: 11208
so what you're telling me that instead of getting the i7-4790K a year ago I should have bought a used 2500K that's only half as powerful?
Old CPU was a shitty AMD Phenom that produced more heat than a nuclear power plant and performed like shit.
>>
>>54022097
>artificial benchmarks
>meaning anything
Where in the flying fuck do you get the idea that OP was suggesting anyone should buy an old CPU? He's talking about when and why you should upgrade, retard.
>>
In gaming you can get 10-20fps more with newer CPUs. Performance with resource-intensive tasks is also much better. So people stuck on old CPUs, what do you actually use your computer for? If you just need a facebook machine or word processor, yeah an old CPU is fine But Sandy Bridge isn't anywhere near the magic architecture /g/ seems to think it is.
>>
>>54018883
30fps doesn't mean anything. If it's up 30 from 700FPS then it's literally nothing. If it's 30FPS up from 50fps then it's great. At least do like a % increase or something.
>>
>>54021255
No, it can start to make noticable improvements at 1080p.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Er_Fuz54U0Y

The Witcher 3 actually prefers faster RAM over a CPU overclock.

>>54022305
Because things become memes and people just repeat them forever. Sandy Bridge was great, and still perfectly adequate for most people's needs once overclocked. But it's left in the dust by Skylake, especially for gaymen. It's just going to take a while for "never obselete :^)" memesters to get their around that.

It was the same thing with dual core CPUs. Less than two years ago /g/ was heartily recommending the G3258 because "gaymes don't use more than two cores". Now almost every gayme demands a quad core, with catastrophic performance on anything less (some even refuse to boot with less than four threads available), and even overclocked to 4GHz+ the G3258 is completely worthless for new AA titles.
>>
>>54018808
Supricingly big difference bethween those cpus but still, reasons to upgrade:none (assuming only for gaymen)
>>
>>54022404
I'm starting to think "do the opposite of what /g/ says" is valid advice. Waitfags on /g/ were wrong too, news of new GPUs sounds less and less impressive, I'm willing to bet there's a lot of people here who waited for no new reason. The only reason to be excited for new GPUs is DX12 and the initial release of DX12 has been lackluster so far. By the time there's enough newgames out to justify a new GPU you'll probably be ready for an upgrade anyway.
>>
One good reason to upgrade to Skylake or Haswell-E/Broadwell-E is new Intel CPUs will no longer support Windows 7 or 8.1, if that's a big deal to you. Windows 10 is the only supported Windows system on Kaby Lake and beyond, if you don't upgrade now you may be fucked in the future.
>>
>>54014961
>For some reason, /g/ thinks sandy bridge was some magic architecture that you never need to upgrade from.

The reason we think that is because Sandy overclocks so high that it can make up for the 5% per generation performance increment that the newer K type CPUs had. And it still uses soldered IHS instead of the later ones that all use thermal paste to make overclocking more difficult (Intel hates overclocking).

The best reason for later CPUs is probably PCIe v3, and better USB3 support. Maybe NVMe boot, but drives aren't common/cheap enough for that.
>>
Since this is a cpu thread, and there's no build threads up, I have a friend running a gtx 760 and and FX-6300. Which is the bigger bottleneck in games? They're both pretty low end components.

Would it be worth it to tell him to upgrade to an fx 8350, or to go intel (requiring new mobo), or to wait out for zen (also requiring new mobo).
>>
>>54023249
Depends which he values more: being able to run games at higher settings or having constant 60 fps. Kepler works like crap in many newer games, so I'd lean towards upgrading the GPU first and waiting for Zen(or its successor, even, depending on his budget) before getting a new CPU.
>>
>>54023409
I honestly don't know what he plays other than World of Warcraft. He was just complaining about his aging machine. I assumed the cpu was the worse performing part because of the fx series's low IPC and the fact that its a low end chip. I agree though that Kepler aged like milk.
>>
>>54022275
then why wouldn't i upgrade? the 2500K is slow as hell for a desktop cpu

Skylake disables many features on Linux or other non-Windows OS
>>
>>54014866
Most of the improvements are coming in chipset features.
They're locking people into upgrading their CPUs to get those chipset features.
>>
>>54020402
Lowering the clocks on DDR4 would result in better timings anyway which would reduce the latency and could result in better performance depending on whether the issue was raw bandwidth or access latency.

It is a fair thing to test.
>>
>>54026583
I've seen someone on Overclockers do this. He bought a set of G.Skill TridentZ and downclocked them from 2666 to 2133 and was able to get the timings down to ridiculous levels (for DDR4, at least)

That's a pretty sweet deal for a quad-core CPU. That's not even $50 more than an AMD A10, and those are budget APUs.

As someone who has a 980ti and a 2500k, I can definitely feel the 2500k being the bottleneck of the the system. Espcially when I can't even get a constant 120fps in BC2 at 1080p.

I've personally been using an i5 2500k for a while. I'll be upgrading to a 6950X or a 6900K when they come out since I like making video content now and have disposable income. I don't plan to upgrade from that CPU for a while since Intel's performance increase per generation is minimal. I don't have high hopes for Xen in terms of "enthusiast" grade CPUs.
