I agree that it's way worse (security-wise and usability-wise) than just having a bigger repo like Debian does, but I never found it "convoluted." You simply download a build script and run it.
With cower, which also downloads dependencies, it's as simple as:$ cower -dd a_package

It takes way to much work for not much output compared to other distros like fedora, ubuntu, and debian. I jist don't see the appeal.
