I had one of these around for ages. It might still be in my parents' garage, but I think we gave in and scrapped it once it was far too old to be of much use. (The place that I take old electronics too will donate useful components or computers to schools and the like, too, so it may have lived on somewhere.)

There's a big difference between iconic and abundant.

That Dell Dimension in your pic is a budget release and at the time of release was lacking imo.

Damn in the early 2000s that's what me and all my buddies had. They were great cases for the time, but by today's standards they are total shit tier. >Our team worked with the metal casting manufacturer on cost reduction, the end result being a proposed one-piece die that would eliminate the witness lines, but would require a slight draft angle to extract the part from the die. We got the supplier to agree to a barely-noticeable ¼ degree draft. We built a visual mockup for evaluation, which confirmed that the draft was barely noticeable. One day SJ stopped by our office, spotted the mockup before he was even fully in the room, and asked what the heck was THAT? I don’t remember his exact words, but he spotted the difference and let us know that it was not going to fly.
tl,dr: Jobs was a pain in the ass.

I think he's making a funny, because the way this thing opens. It like a briefcase, no side panel for this beast, on no. Nothing like trying to shove a heatsink in there, let alone replace the mobo. The mobo it held in place firmly by metal tabs attached to the case, you have to bend those to get it out. Oh and don't get me started on the RAM, I think it's a transition property design, somewhere between ddr1 and ddr2. It actually has a spacer stick u have to put in the other slot if it's not being used. But yeah these computers suck ass.

Sadly I doubt you'll find many on /g/ who are even old enough to remember.

My family's first computer was actually even older, a VIC-20 as shown here. It had been replaced by a 386 with DOS and then 3.1 by the time I was old enough to actually USE a computer, though, and I mostly remember the VIC-20 as a thing collecting dust in the garage.

Come to think of it, I wonder why you don't see basic all-in-ones built into KBs anymore.

Even users in the '80s didn't want that weak, unexpandable and bulky shit outside of the ultra low-end where it was a more convenient form factor for use with a television. Nowadays you can much more effectively fill the same niche with a large laptop or SFF/AIO desktop.
>>
>>54010867
>>compact as shit
I don't know about that. Maybe because it's all in one box, easier to transport. Somewhat. it's still big as fuck and contains a CRT.
>>
>>54011147
They were huge and bulky in the '80s because computer hardware in general was huge and bulky, though.

Nowdays you could fit hardware at least on par with an ultrabook into something the size of an average non-mechanical KB, and probably something decently capable of gaming into a slightly overgrown mech board. It might make for an interesting LAN setup for undemanding games like CS, MOBAs, etc.

Because the average users don't want it cause it has no 1-click install fart apps, and the tech users don't want it because it is not running Unix.

If you implemented the form factor with any kind of meaningful hardware, the shit required to dissipate the heat from power-sucking modern components would make up for the difference.

>>Nowdays you could fit hardware at least on par with an ultrabook into something the size of an average non-mechanical KB

But at that point, why exactly would you bother and not just use an ultrabook in the first place? If you're space-conscious, a laptop that includes a built in monitor, far less cable spaghetti and actual portability is a much better choice. If you're just really hell-bent on using your 20''/4K monitor but don't want to devote too much desk space to a traditional desktop or a laptop with a dock, then you probably still have more than enough space for a far more useful and upgradable SFF desktop or all-in-one with a nice display instead of some shitty gaming laptop with no screen and an awful permanently grafted keyboard.
>>
>>54012300
later PC300 minitowers should fit standard mATX boards just fine

wouldn't really like the idea of destroying a 300XL or other slider box for some half-assed sleeper build though, those things had some real cool engineering, especially the dual socket pentium pro 365 model

The Dell is "iconic" if you're talking about family computers. I fucking hate it. I don't want it to be ironic.

I just had a shitty time with them is all. I've NEVER touched one of those fucking boxes when they were new afaik. Always when they're full of shit running XP and running slow as fuck. It's always in someone's house used by someone with the patience of a saint who couldn't give fuck all if she had to wait 4 weeks for her Internet Explorer powered by Yahoo! edition to fucking start up.

I need a moment here, or a hug. I can't handle this right now. And then opening one of those up and looking at what Dell called "easy access".. oh god.. there goes my heart.

Got any plans for it? I guess it'll make a useless server. By useless I mean.. a file server you don't really need. Essentially what most of /g/ has. Essentially a computer who's hardware is useless besides the hard drive, which stores files that you could fit 20 times over on that laptop you probably have lying around somewhere.

I haven't followed the scene in recent years, but Japan practically had/has a cottage industry in modding and upgrading those compact macs, particularly the Color Classic since it had a color screen, (then) modern features already built into the case, and in particular, the internals was designed similar to other Macs of the era. Despite its size, the logic board was the same width as most all the other Macs of the era, (including the Power Mac towers.) Some boards you could just swap in, others required some internal plastic surgery to fit a slightly longer board.
