IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Is there any downside to picking up an HP EliteBook besides the keyboard?
>>
Whats a good 13" thinkpad with good battery life?
Does the X220 only have 5 hours?
>>
>>53958874
Not directly. It's more so what you prefer, and getting the best you can get with your budget baring hardware, aesthetics, and quality. However your bound to get more Thinkpoint support and help on this board due to the popularity of Thinkpads.
>>
>>53959040
X220 gets about an hour per cell on a good battery.
>>
I'm thinking of falling for the Thinkpad meme. Is the w700 any good?
>>
>>53959123
Specs haven't aged well for the price. More of a novelty item than a good Thinkpad for serious usage.
>>
>>53959167
Are there any good 17" Thinkpads?
>>
>>53959227
No, Get a W530 and a dock with dual monitors.
>>
>>53959227
W701 would be more respectable, but they're all fairly rare and expensive compared to equivalent 15" models.
>>
Is it possible to mod a x240 and install the x250 touchpad with buttons? I'm interested in one but I could get a t440p with discreet CPU for a little more money. Which should I get and why?
>>
>>53959266
Looks like it has a shitty keyboard compared to other Thinkpads. Any other good ones?
>>
>>53959657

W520 then. i just said **30 because despite liking the **20 keyboard, i think the **30 looks a little bit nicer.

What and when was your last consumer laptop fuckup before you decided you'd had enough and went business class?

>HP DV9000
>2010
>LCD tube cable wrapped all up in a hole in the left hinge
>ruined within two years as the cable is so frayed
>17" laptop
>1.5mm thick hinges
>broken hinges within 2 years
>Even replacement hinges only lasted a year each
>LCD Cable is so frayed at this point you can't turn on the laptop without hitting the power button, quickly shoving the screen down
>1001 screws on everything
Fuck this literal scam product

>2012
>sell motherboard for $80 on ebay
>Get T61 for $120 at the time
>LCD cable has its own circular hinge and is flat so it won't fray
>hinges are thick and sturdy as fuck
>8 screws hold in like 90% of everything
>absolutely positively no problems ever with it
Consumer laptops are literally all shiny timebombs designed to get to you le buy it again

About 4 months after buying that laptop I found my T420 on craigslist for under 1/2 i paid for that laptop with better specs all around. Still need to wipe and sell the fucker.
>>
>>53959040
Really depends on what you're doing. You can get 9 hours with the wifi on if just reading text, but that drops off quick if watching video. Especially 1080p60 video, which takes 80-100% CPU and will drain even a new battery in 2-3 hours. (The hardware decoder doesn't seem to work on 60 fps content.)

>lousy battery life by 2008
>power jack broke, then power adapter broke, then replaced it with a universal one and the GPU died

Replaced in early 2009 with a Latitude E6400 that's somehow still working.

Get it for collectors... because there really isn't a reason to have one since the P70 is the latest 17" ThinkPad.

I was disappointing with the keyboard flex it had.
The wacom digitizer was kind of odd to use specially since I had an X61T for years... I maybe only used a wacom tablet for 2 months before i got tired of it.

>>53959715
I had a Toshiba Satellite A205 about 4 years ago.

>15" shitty screen
>Pentium T2230? I think
>2GB of DDR2 memory

It was flimsy as fuck, the trackpad sucked ass, and the keyboard felt like moist cardboard. The hinges also wobbled to all fuck, and the ribbon cable to the LCD eventually died. When I took the machine apart to scavenge what I could, I saw that the LCD cable was frayed -- inside the machine.

That was the last straw for me. Immediately after that, I started with a T400, quickly upgraded to an X220 Tablet, moved on to an X230 Tablet and sold the X220, moved on to a T430 and sold the X230, and now I'm waiting on getting a P40 Yoga.

After a couple years of using that abomination I heard about Thinkpads from a buddy who said they were dirt-cheap laptops that were good for programming. Picked up a T60 for $60, saw the light, and never looked back. I've spent the past year and a half upgrading nearly every single part in it, and even after trying newer Thinkpads with better specs and battery life in better condition, none of them really appealed to me the way my T60 did. I fucking love this laptop.

My IPS screen for my x200 came in today. I ordered a matte panel, and it was a glossy one arrived. I decided to install it anyways. I plugged it in and tested it, and black smoke started rising from the display cable of my x200. I unplugged it right away, and I looked for the model number on the panel itself(I had trusted the model on the ebay listing). It was a completely different panel.

I was very surprised that my x200 still worked when I put the stock panel back in.

That's in the normal range. You can clean the fan and repaste your CPU and maybe shave off a few degrees but don't expect it to ever run as cool as a desktop. Don't worry about it either way, the CPU is fine if it doesn't run for extended periods over 90 or so.

I'm pretty spoiled. I've always had business-class laptop hardware. My dad gave me some ancient Thinkpad back when I was a kid (don't know which model, but it ran Win95). Wish I'd kept it.

I went for a while with desktops only. When I eventually landed the job I have now I started getting hand-me-downs they were going to scrap. I had a Compaq Evo N600C (Pentium III era), then a Dell Latitude D810 then a D410 (both Pentium M, Benis era I think).

Then I finally picked up a T60p. What a fucking machine.

No. Only *20 series and up can do msata SSD. That means X220, T420, T520, and W520 and up. Since it's a T series, if you don't care about your DVD drive, get a hard drive caddy.

I've been wanting a big 17" laptop with at least a 1920x1200 screen for a while now. But I don't have much to spend.

I've sort of zeroed in on the the HP Elitebook 8740w. It seems like this laptop goes for under $250 on ebay and comes with the older i5's for that price.

The only downside I've consistently mentioned with this laptop is low battery life. Is there anything else to look out for?

T50 wasn't released due to unspecified 'problems' that needed to be fixed.
The problems never got fixed.
The X62 is now in the same state; there are unspecfied 'display problems' that need to be fixed before a full run. They claimed there would be an update beginning of march. It's now April and the project has been radio silence.

So, about par for the course. Believe it when you have one in your hands. Until then, they're just lolware.
>>
>>53963434

I'm not gonna buy it used. It's a special offer for students, and I can get it pretty cheap (Yoga 260 with i7 CPU for ~1400$ instead of over 2000$). Since I don't live in the US, they're obviously not selling it with a US keyboard.

Now I've looked around on eBay if I can find one shipped from the US, but it's more expensive and I'll have to pay outrageous shipping costs and taxes on top of that.

Now whatever keyboard I have I'll remap it to US anyways on the OS level, plus with ans ISO layout I'll get one more key for free. I can touch type, so I don't need the physical layout to match the logical layout. But it kind of bothers me if they don't (inb4 autism). That's why I asked if, as a last resort, there exist some stickers made for turning it into a blank keyboard (or if I could use nail polish remover or something without melting of the keycaps)

I'm in the same boat too. I'm quite comfortable opening my laptop up and changing the kb, if it's within practical realms. I change screens on phones all the time.

I'm hopefully ordering a yoga next week, and it'll be a used one, as comparing it to a newer ones I don't see the point paying twice the dollaroos for such a minimal update. Only thing would be the fact that it's new, and upgradeable ram. I think I'll manage with 8GiB, though, for the time being.

Are the keys backlit? If not, maybe I'll just tape some stickers on the caps as I don't 99.99999% of the time need to see the kb. Only with maybe `´ characters I have to look down and search 'em.

Got a good deal, and it comes with the mid-specs at 8 gigs ram, the i5 and the 128 ssd but with no touch and with the 1376x res. I can live with that, but the meme trackpad worries me. Replacing that shit is doable but a hassle, will I get used to the thing, /g/, or should I order a x250 trackpad or bezel right now?

Center a circle on a 500x500 plane.
Add three round-corner squares, centered on the origin, then pad them out the same amount of pixels.
After doing that, add a second circle, a set amount of pixels greater in diameter than the first, that is masked to only show on the keys.

I tested LoL in a t400. It can run at 60 fps (roughly 40 at high demanding moments like team fights) on low graphics and low resolution.

It all comes down to how many fps you want and if you don't bother playing at low graphics/resolution in most cases.

from a youtube interview with a Lenovo higher up managing the whole thing it's going to take a while; end of 2017 at the earliest

i cant argue with that, if i could, id like an x220, 9cell, 1080p ips, ssd and i7 ulv , would be the perfect thinkpad desu, infact just an ssd upgrade and a 9cell, maybe a bump to 8gb of ram is already really comfy and pretty much a portable workhouse.

also desu, despite the ULV's being great on battery, i feel like sandybridge cpu's perform better, this may sound stupid / placebo, but i use my x220 alot more than my i7-5500u laptop (940m, 8gb ram, 1tb hdd, standard hp shit desu) because the x220 throttles way less and can maintain a heavy workload for alot longer, however my other laptop will do great for about 10-15 minutes then it will throttle and become a POS. ._. thats to do with the vents though, so i guess i cant blame ULV processors, its more like HP's fault.

Nope just use the little adapter they give you or just use paper and tape or whatever to make it touch the top. You don't want it banging around when you're moving it. Not nearly as important for doing this for a hard drive and you could probably get away with it, with the SSD it's more about not wanting the sata port to experience stress and move around.

Not reference. It's an actual photo.

Because the trackpoint top flange overlaps the keys on all ThinkPad keyboards since the T22 days. It overlaps even more since they ditched the seven-row.
Even on the R3200, a soft-dome actually touches the G and H keys.
>>
>>53961866
That was a mistake then. When buying Laptop screens you probably shouldn't go by what says "compatible" in the description.

Though when I did my X200 I bought a whole display assembly for whatever Gateway convertible laptop that was, which came with the correct Boe Hydis panel. I wouldn't necessarily recommend that either because cutting off the digitizer takes forever when you're afraid of nicking the screen underneath with your scalpel blade.
>>

I'm sure you can get lower prices.
>>
>>53972330
that's the thing, they say it's "for" the Boe Hydis HV121WX4-120 they don't say it "is" one. And they very deliberately blurred out the labels on the pictures they posted, and the first one doesn't even look like the back of a Boe Hydis screen.

Unfortunately the guy who was clearing out the Gateway E-155c screens seems to be out of them so I don't have any good recommendations on who to buy from.

there are 2 types of wireless chips so it depends what you have, the Thinkpad wireless is the basic option that doesn't have multiple antennas or the 5.2ghz band. Look up your service tag on lenovo's website if you want to know for sure what's in there, otherwise just try installing the Intel package first and if it doesn't find the right hardware it will give you an error.

Besides that, you should install the Lenovo touchpad driver, hotkey integration (to make the Fn keys work) and power manager, and the Intel chipset, display and ethernet drivers from Intel's site. Maybe also the USB 3 driver if you have a core i7 version of the x220.

That should be everything you actually need.

Some Toshiba or something?

So after a bit of thought, I've decided on getting myself a T420. Newegg sells refurbished ones for $200. Should I buy one there and upgrade with hd+ screen and SSD?

You can snag one for less on ebay, but not as guaranteed that you'll get one in as nice of a condition as the newegg refurbished ones.
>>
>>53977469
Specs?

Newegg models tend to have medicore hardware for the price. If you don't mind bidding on ebay, that's the way to get the most bang for your buck. If you don't have time, even "buy it now" options tend to have better hardware than newegg. Just make sure you read the descriptions carefully so you know exactly what your getting.

Hey /tpg/.
I am looking to buy a T420 for work. I was just in the current desktop thread and someone told me their T420 came with a not so great display and that Lenovo changed the TFT over the course of the release of the T420 model. I was wondering if you knew how to avoid getting the worse screen.

>>

>>
>>53977557
Depends on the model, for example the W520 with a quad core cpu can support up to 32gb, while the x220 and t420 can only support up to 16gb.

Haven't heard of this care to clarify?
>>
>>53977737
Basically the Thinkpad 1600x900 display is still shit, despite the resolution. Still has the god-awful colors and screen-door effect.

There's a 1600x900 display that was used in some shitty alienware laptop, but has the exact same size and mounting points as the T420 screen.

Basically, it's a simple drop it in and plug it in upgrade.

Here's some links detailing it:

>Basically, it's a simple drop it in and plug it in upgrade
You're gonna need an hd+ cable if it came with a 1366x768 screen.
Still pretty easy, though.
>>
>>53977808
Anything like this for the X220?

>>
>>53977844
Yep, ordered one of those too. Somehow the chinks had it for 11 canadian pesos.

>>53977848
There isn't really a drop-in replacement for the X220 as far as I know. Only things I've heard of are the chink upgrades which start at like 1080p, but also require a whole lot more fuss (i.e. eDP to LVDS conversion boards etc). Here's a link:

http://boweihe.me/?p=1442

>>53977918
Already have an X220 (gave it to family) and I didn't have time to wait around to find a good deal on any T420, let alone one with a 1600x900 screen.

Thinkpads are super expensive here in Canada
>>
>>53977952
ah tru. so how are x220
s compared to T420's? what are the pros?
>>
>>53977918
The stock screens aren't very good to begin with. Pretty bad viewing angles and brightness. Plus harder to find.
>>
>>53977968
I've been using this T420 for a much longer time so I like it better, but honestly there isn't much of a difference if you're comparing a 1366x768 T420 to a 1366x768 X220. The IPS screen on the X220 is wayyyyy better, but the X220 also gets pretty hot since it doesn't have as much thermal dispersion capacity.

I don't mind the extra bulkiness of the T420, and some things like the Ultrabay (have a second SSD in there) plus the soon-to-arrive higher-res display make it a better pick IMO.

As for the X220, sure, its lighter, but you're probably a little bitch if you can't carry around a few extra pounds. Also the fact that it doesn't have a screen latch is kind of a pain in the ass.
>>
>>53978024
>X220 gets pretty hot

Surely not from normal every day use right?
>>
>>53978069
If you're running windows (consider suicide) it'll get warm. CPU temps around 50C. If you're running CPU intensive programs, the fucker skyrockets quickly.

The fact of the matter is that the X220 is very small and so gets hot quickly.

On the other hand, if you run a gnu/linux distro there's some tools to keep the cpu idle and generally gnu/linux distros are far more lightweight then nsa/windows.

What's up with all the questions, are you considering buying a T420 or X220?
>>
>>53978112
Not the same one as you've been talking to this whole thread.

I already bought the X220, it's coming in on Friday. I only need it to bode me over until I graduate in 2 years as an excel/animu machine for my finance classes that use macros with thousands of entries and shit.

Could the x220 run excel without issue through VM?
>>
>>53978314
Are you running a windows guest VM from a linux host?
>>
>>53978355
I think?

I am illiterate when it comes to linux. I don't mind learning though. If a good distro can run it fine through something like WINE or what you're suggesting, I'll just do that instead of keeping Win7 installed.
>>
>>53978389
you could just open the excel natively with openoffice or something, or google docs
>>
>>53978389
Yeah honestly if you're not experienced with Linux you're best off just running windows. VMs need some tuning to run without lag, especially on a relatively underpowered system like the **20-series Thinkpads.

It probably won't run Excel with all that shit that well in a VM, but natively it should do fine. Consider a dual-boot with 2 SSDs or something.
>>
guys what kind of external monitor should i get for my t420?
>>
>>53978389
>>53978434
Use libreoffice or google docs. If you dual boot, partition one SSD, with a smaller linux and larger windows filesystems. Then store everything on the windows one that you want access to from both, easiest way to do it. Unless there is some third party driver that can do ext* on windows that's better now, even still I wouldn't want my windows to even access the linux partition at all.
>>
http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Lenovo/thinkpad-t420
Is Crucial pretty reliable?
I'm going to get a RAM upgrade and a 240GB SSD from them along with a T420.
I'll also want to upgrade the processor. I read that a quad core i7 runs too hot. What's the next best thing?
>>
>>53978461
If money isn't an issue, get a Dell U2412M, It's 1920x1200. I fuckin want one so bad.
>>
>>53978505
Crucial had some firmware problems with their older SSDs but seems to be fine now. I'd get a Samsung 850 instead, it's not that much more expensive.

For the processor, the dual core i7 doesn't offer much over an i5, if you have an i3 to begin with you will need to upgrade the heatsink, because they used one with only 1 heatpipe and aluminum fins instead of copper in the T420i.

I guess it's just me that likes the msata SSDs. If you're *20 series and up (you are), it will work. Used intel, toshiba, micron, mwave products so there doesn't seem to be any sort of whitelist from Lenovo. These things are only a little more expensive than your regular SSD, and all you have to do is forego your WWAN if you had one. I must be the only one here who does this.
>>
>>53978591
I plan to just replace the hard drive with an SSD and then replace the disc drive with the HDD. Does this configuration work alright?
>>
>>53978404
OpenOffice and Google docs are absolute shit for anything beyond the simplest functions. They also fuck up formatting when you export them as MS excel files.

>>53978434
>>53978490
I'll just run windows then until I upgrade the hard drive to an SSD.
>>
i dunno, i feel like this res is totally fine on my x220

only thing id want to do is get an IPS screen desu
>>
>>53978619
You can do this, can easily get by and even eject the drive out and swap it for the DVD drive for your one use per month. This really shines if you need a massive amount of storage, and go for msata SSD, plus two hard drives.

>>53978632
Perfectly fine just make sure you either reinstall or clone it over using modern software. I'm that guy who knows this faggot that uses ghost 2003, it does not clone to SSDs properly. Best imo is clonezilla.
>>
>>53978591
>more expensive
My 850 EVO mSATA was the same price as its standard form factor counterpart.
>>
What exactly are docks/docking stations, and what is the best option for the T420?
>>
>>53978707
They add more I/O options. Typically this includes a load of additional USB ports, various video outputs and a couple legacy ports, as well as an extra Ultrabay. For older Thinkpad generations, there existed an Advanced Dock which had a PCI-E slot that made for a quick and easy eGPU setup. They were discontinued after the T400, though. They just provide more ports now. I think one of the docking options for the T420 has USB 3.0 ports, I suppose that would be the most useful.
>>
>>53978700
There you go. Last time I did this was a couple years ago. There's no reason not to get msata.

The year was 2010, the offending laptop was some model from Fujitsu Siemens. It ran very hot. The GFX card in it was some piece of shit NVidia that decided to commit suicide because of bad solder. Apparently NVidias of the time were notorious for doing this.

I replaced it with a T60 with ATI graphics in it. Ooh-lalaa, fuck if it didn't just werk. Fucking beautiful machine, and 6 years later it still works like nobody's fucking business and I still sometimes shitpost with it.

I've tasted quality and I'm never going back to consumer shit. The legacy lives on, My daily driver is now a T510.
>>
>>53959715
2014. I'd had Asus Eee PCs for a while, and an Asus RoG laptop (was in college, had to basically move cross-country twice yearly) and they both had good build quality, so I bought an Asus X401u to use as a hanging-around laptop to complement my new desktop.

Slow as shit, to the point that it could download files faster than it could write to the hard drive. Performance issues running fucking Windows. A permanent smudge on the plastic from trying to peel off the stickers. A shitty backlight and a glossy screen. The keys started falling off nine months in and the battery was shot.

That christmas, I bought myself a T420 that is still as good, if not better, now. Paid the same amount that I did for that garbage Asus too.

Asus is a special case. Their eeePCs and their high end stuff have very good build quality, but my god, the mid tier stuff are garbage tier.
