So when downloading files from the internet I can get ~5 mb/s or so over my home's wifi. But for some reason when I try to transfer files from one computer to another in my home I get ~ 1.5 mb/s.

Why is this? Shouldn't the speed be faster? Like close to the 100 mb/s the router advertises? Both computers have good connections, but when moving files across wifi they won't transfer any faster than 1.5 mb/s
>>
>>53956710
Waifu2x
>>
>>53956734
internet -(cable)> router -(wifi)> computer = 5mb/s
because you're using the wifi one way.
computer -(wifi)> router -(wifi)> computer = 1.5mb/s
because you're using wifi 2 ways
>>
>>53956788
Fuck this kinda makes sense. Would going wired improve my speeds a great deal? Eventually I'd like to set up a home server but that's another problem for another time.

I use that for big changes in size, but I need at least one other tool for non-power-of-2 resizes and cases where waifu2x is too oilpainty for the content. ImageMagick is tried and true, but I'm not up to speed with whatever new options there may or may not be.

unless you upgrade to a better wifi (dual or multi-band, wifi AC) you'll forever be bottlenecked by it. and yes ethernet is the cheaper solution. it'll improve your ping time greatly too.

I notice visual glitches will randomly occur on my desktop PC. My GPU is fairly new and the temps never get hot. My drivers and everything are up to date.

Sometimes this will result in the PC freezing on a black screen and looping audio and stuff. Any idea what the problem could be?

Someone enlighten me here.

Corsair CX500M states it has 2 PCI connectors on it on the specifications. (6+2pin x2)

But when i look at the CPU im wondering where theese 2 PCI connectors are.

Given that im using the Sata for drives and peripherals for fans and such.
If i'm using the 8pin for the CPU that only leaves me with 6pin for the GPU right?

Am i missing something here? Do i just not plug the CPU power cable in?

Green = 4+4 CPU

You can't plug the PCI-E wire supplied with this PSU because it only fix in the 6+2 PCI-E slot meaning you are stuck with just 2x 6+2 connectors for this plug.

You can get another 2x+6+2 connectors from the Peripheral ports if you plug the molex wire and then use a molex to 6+2 adapter that usually comes with new GPUs or buy them.

Something about the way you asked that makes me suspicious of your intents, but I'll answer anyway. Hopefully you're an Iranian political dissident and not, say, a terrorist or kiddy fiddler.

Basically, to have even a soft guarantee of security (using any platform), you have to ACTUALLY know what you're doing. You need to understand the problems, the solutions your platform offers for them, how it implements them, the possible side channel attacks and how to mitigate them, etc.

With zero experience, you are more likely to draw attention to yourself than hide. So my advice is: If it's actually critical to stay anonymous, don't even try until you've thoroughly educated yourself on the entire field of computer/network security.

Is it bad to let your phone and/or laptop charge overnight?

My phone usually charges from a dead charge in like 2 hours at the most. Is the battery ok sitting at 100% all night or should I unplug it and drain some before I wake up in the morning?
>>
>>53957441
>>53957456
I think i'm really misunderstanding something here

6+2 PCI connectors, are they 6+2 on the GPU side but 6 on the PSU side so they can fit in the 6pin holes?

Because no matter how i look it at, i only see one 6+2pin and 3 6pin
>>
>>53957418
Pick two: Cheap, good, laptop.

Still, that particular one doesn't look awful. But it has no SSD. I don't think you'd want to boot from mechanical storage in 2016. Budget for an SSD and swap it in.

Can I ask why you want a large laptop, though? It seems to me that anything over 12" is too big to actually cart around, so you'd be using it as a desktop replacement. Why not just get a desktop?
>>
>>53957154
then you'll be fine with fisher price whatever. Why are you asking for recommendations if you have no standards?

Ok, I'm completely ignorant but I'm wondering if any knowledgeable person can list something for me. What is a rough hierarchy of programming languages or levels involved when someone is using the internet, say for example my post here - I'm posting on a page that's made up of html, what's the next layer down? Is if the internet browser, presumably made using a language like C++? Then what's the layer below that and on down? How many layers are there?

yet, whenever I'm listening to music, either I tapped the screen too fast, or even when lowering / increasing volume or talking to a friend in background it will pop the fuck up for no reason and be like " sorry I didn't quite catch that " And pauses the music

it only began happening after the last damn update as well

Following idea: I have a virtual machine running, in that VM there is a website open which has some tick-data (data that changes possibly every second), now I have a python script that takes control of the mouse and keyboard and does the following:
[1] select text of tick-data
[2] copy / CTRL+C
[3] paste/ save in a .txt-file

However the .txt-file must be readable and accessible fast by another program OUTSIDE of the VM, a program that runs on my actual computer. Is that possible, e.g. can files that are generated inside the VM be saved to my actual C:\ drive? please say yes, please...

The answer is yes, of course. Files can be shared from one computer to another. Look into CIFS/Samba/NFS/etc for ways to locally mount a location shared on a network. There's also FTP, SFTP and shit like that.

Google some of those and you should be on your way.

Upon attempting to add a 3rd 4tb hgst harddrive to my xubuntu machine, it will not appear in the bios or in the actual operating system. When I plug this device into either a windows machine or the xubuntu machine via sata to usb connection to check if the actual disk is broken, I can only see 1.64 tb of storage space, regardless of how the partition table is formatted. What can I do to make the remaining space available, and how can I make my xubuntu machine see it through the sata port? Again, this is the 3rd drive of it's kind I've tried to put into the server, and the only one that's fucked. The motherboard itself has 4 sata ports, so unless the other two are somehow locked in the bios I can't fathom what would cause this. The pc itself is a hp compaq 6005 pro refurb.

Thank you for your time /g/.

8.1: Boot to desktop instead of start screen, install Classic Shell's start menu, disable corner/edge actions with it, and use normal control panel instead of PC Settings. You now have a basically Metro-free desktop experience.

10: You're pretty much stuck with Metro. It's spread into too much of the system to fully avoid. You can avoid a lot of it by installing Classic Shell start menu, using the old control panel instead of Settings, etc.

So the Windows 7 .iso I have is Enterprise. I heard of this thing called DAZ (aka Windows Loader 2.2.2) that can make Windows genuine after installation. Problem is, I don't see Enterprise in the list of supported versions of Windows 7. Bit of a problem unless I'm willing to free up space and snag Professional or Ultimate from elsewhere (then again, I don't see Ultimate on TPB).

Furthermore, my case showed up. I'll most likely get the GTX 950 next month. Don't intend on going higher then 1080p and while the benchmarks on Digital Foundry seem okay, I don't intend on playing anything especially recent or graphically heavy. As in, nothing Digital Foundry featured.

But I'm getting sidetracked. The case I got is a Corsair 200R. Can that Hyper 212 EVO fan fit in there without obstructing anything on the motherboard (like the RAM slots) or will the generic fan suffice for the 8320E? The box itself looks a ways smaller then I thought so I don't even know if there's a fan in there (I'm not opening anything until every part is accounted for).

*/ Posted this in /fglt/ but thought I should post here as well /*

Just installed Ubuntu on my Macbook Pro Retina, need a bit of help regarding GRUB.

So I tried installing Arch and Windows on this laptop ages ago, gave up and then went back to pure OS X. Then I tried dual booting it with OS X and a bootcamp Windows partition; worked but it literally had no use, so I ended up repartitioning and going back to pure OS X again.

Now I just want to dual boot Ubuntu and OS X on the laptop, which I can do as of right now but it's really sketchy. I can get into Ubuntu from GRUB on boot up but in order to get into OS X I have to hold down ALT on startup and get in using that. Not to mention on my GRUB menu (and when I hold down ALT) there's fucking 'boot into Windows' sort of options even know I don't have Windows installed or want it anywhere on this drive.

How do I get GRUB to give me just two options on boot up - Ubuntu and OS X? I eventually want to switch to a sexier boot loader (like rEFInd or someshit) but for now I just want to get it setup nice and simple.
>>
>>53961076

Suppose I have some abstract data type that is built up of layers of abstraction. Say I can expose the lower levels of abstraction through the higher levels interface.

Now, some function relies on a particular level of this data type as argument. Should I give it the highest possible level of abstraction and have the function extract the level required, or should I have the data type give the lowest level of abstraction possible?

Example: say I have a wrapper data type for a list and it has a function getList(). Some function requires the list itself, not the wrappers interface. Do I give it the list with getList() as argument, or do I pass it the wrapper and have the function call getList()?

that's the max speed the drive can read/write, doesn't matter if SATA could transfer much more.

the faster SSDs are mostly PCIe/M.2 drives and cost a lot more.

If you need a faster one get a PCIe/SAS/M.2 one.

My 2012 PC with mostly 2011 hardware will be undergoing an upgrade soon. I'm also feeling like Tom Hanks in Big when he gets his first paycheck. I'm up for spending some money.
I need help figuring out graphics card, and I'd appreciate some pros and cons from more up to date peers. So here's what I'm looking at:
>PC is designed mostly for games. Not playing many triple A games, but I'd like my machine to handle them at high+ settings
>I have a 144Hz full HD monitor which doesn't support Gsync. So I want my graphics card to render games well at high frame rates
Now, I know 970 has this 3.5gb ordeal, so I want to ask whether or not the 980 has some big flaw of the same scale. What about other models, are they any good for the task? In addition to that, the AMD graphics line baffles me with its 290 and 290x and now the three hundreds. How do you introduce a newcomer to the AMD graphics world? Which AMD card is on par with which Nvidia card?

I keep seeing arguments on the wide web and on /v/ that say "this game works great on this brand's cards, but after the update, it support the other one's much better". I see technologies of one brand handicap the other brand badly. Is there a drama-free graphics card that avoids all that, renders the games well and just werk?

Is manually uninstalling gpu drivers before installing updated ones still a thing? Surely in [current year] the new installer would surely do all the cleaning up itself, right?
>>
>>53964186
The problem with 980 is that it's not worth the price.

GTX 970 is gimped if you're going to do anything graphics heavy. 980ti is still consumer product king, for now.

Don't get the r9 290 or 290x, you'll be playing lottery with the memory type of elpida vs hynix that causes random black screen issues, get the Sapphire/MSI r9 380/380x or r9 390 if you're going AMD. r9 390 is best bang for buck.

No such thing as a drama-free graphics card, this drama has been going on for longer than certain soap operas.

Mobo : MSI B150 PC Pro
CPU: i5 6500
Ram: 8gb DDr4 2133mhz
Storage: 120 GB ssd HyperX Kingston + 500 GB seagate 7200 rpm
GPU: MSI Twin Frozr Gaming GTX 950
PSU : 550 Watts 85% efficiency inWin
Case : NZXT s340 White case with window +NZXT LED white kit installed + two 140mm NZXT fans.

$600

gtx 960 will give smoother framerate and it can play the game at 1440p.

4k you'd be better off getting a 970, because your framerate would be at a constant 40 or lower with the 960

Well eh I have an evo 850 that'll replace the ssd. I can use it on my old pc. I know the PSU is pretty shit but I won't be adding components or planning an SLI/CF. It's just fine imo. The system under load wouldn't reach 300W.

I'm indifferent to the case but as long as it's quiet it's fine. It has a window which is a nice addition imo. This deal more or less prevented be from going full retarded and getting a $200 mobo & an i7-6700k & $150 850W G2 PSU. I think it's for the best.
>>
>>53964866

>B150 motherboard
Bad idea, that chipset is designed for business applications so you'll be paying for features that you'll never need. Get H110 or H170.
>CPU: i5 6500
>Ram: 8gb DDr4 2133mhz
Good choices.
>Storage: 120 GB ssd HyperX Kingston + 500 GB seagate 7200 rpm
The SSD is good, but do you really need 7200rpm on the drive? I assume all your high priority data will be on the SSD, so the speed of the HDD is kind of irrelevant.
>GPU: MSI Twin Frozr Gaming GTX 950
This GPU will do for most games. However, I'd recommend taking a look at EVGA B stock, yo could probably get a 960 or 780 for the same price as that.
>PSU : 550 Watts 85% efficiency inWin
Nope. Put any spare money into a better power supply. Another £20 and you can get a high quality Corsair power supply that isn't going to fry your components in a year. Also, do you really need 550 watts? Skylake is very energy efficient. I have a 500 watt supply and my 6600 and GTX 980 never draw more than about 400 watts.
>Case : NZXT s340 White case with window +NZXT LED white kit installed + two 140mm NZXT fans.

So I have a drive that my mobo is saying "SMART status bad" on bootup now. Should I just toss it? Or might I still get several months use out of it before it dies?

I can still access it at the moment and I'm making a full disc image backup of it, have already ordered a replacement in Amazon as well,
>>
>>53965098
Thanks for the in-depth analysis anon. I really understand all your points very clearly. In fact, I was going for an ASUS Z170A with an i7-6700K/412Slim with 16GB of DDR4 RAM (2400Mhz) with a Phantom NZXT case powered by an 850W G2 PSU and an 380 without any storage.

However I live in a shithole and this would have cost me about 1.5k and the PSU and Motherboard are out of stock for another month or more. But this was a deal that I saw out of the blue, and it costs about $800 brand new. The guy built it a month ago and he's traveling for work (good for him) and I thought I'd take it. I mean, is there anything really wrong with it? I never thought I'd need an i7k but I was going to get it because I'm retarded. Its going to be for lightwork. I already have an Evo 850 and a 2TB WD Black I plan to plug in there.

>>53965234
Use manufacturer software to make a live CD/USB and perform low-level diagnostics. Depending on what values are bad exactly, you may be able to make it last for a couple of months or even over a year. I'd suggest HD sentinal to try and bring it back to life.

>>
>>53965511
Maybe.

When dealing with water and electronics, you ALWAYS need to remove it from any power source as quickly as humanly possible. That includes battery, charger, whatever. The shit needs to have no power going through it to minimize the likelihood of damage.

Still worth drying it out to see, but in the future you need to pull the battery and keep it off until you're 100% sure it's dry for the best chance of recovery.

>>
>>53966656
For some years now. It's definetly not most 'big' games, but the bigger AAA games like that can totally reach that high. We haven't seen much bigger than that.
Quantun Break is probably over 100GB if you chose to install all the videos instead of streaming them but that's an excpetion.

>>

>>
>>53966694
Ever since blu-ray became a thing games have used all the space they're given (it's often wasted too - the Battlefield games don't even compress their audio losslessly which is why they're so large)
It especially sucks since consoles started demanding installation. My wife got me an Xbox One for Christmas and between the 50gb installation and the 10gb day one patch I didn't get to play a game until boxing day.

yeah, 50gb is the maximum for a dual layer blu-ray. Triple and quadruple layer blu-ray exist now which can reach up to 128gb, though I'm not sure whether consoles have hardware that could read those disks after a firmware patch or if they'd need a specialized disk drive (the original Wii got support for dual layer DVDs in a patch)

I was recently offered a job from a friend of my father's, making a website for his local business. This offer was because I'm known as a "computer guy", in that I build PCs and am generally knowledgeable in using computers. This experience, however, does not include, coding of any kind and I've never made a website before.

I've seen Squarespace advertised all over Youtube and it sounds like an easy way for an inexperienced person like me to make a website. Can Squarespace be used to make websites for businesses? Also what are the legal and ethical considerations for being paid to make a website, but using tools and templates like Squarespace?

Might this be a reasonable option or should I politely decline?

For my project I need to apply a java-script that takes control of mouse and keyboard (jrobot) and it all works fine on my main Win7 machine. But then I naturally give away all control and can't use my mouse/keyboard anymore as long as the script is using it. So can I execute the script inside a VirtualMachine like I do on my main machine now, while a still maintaining control of mouse/keyboard on my local machine?

e.g. if you have a script that lets your mouse run in circles, and you run that script inside VM VirtualBox Win7, and then you continue to work on your main/local machine, will the VM VirtualBox mouse still continue to execute the script so that it can run in the background and you don't have to worry about it?

clarification: the script really is clicking on stuff on some website, so all I would need to do is open firefox on the VM and run the script and then it starts clicking. Then I can turn my attention away to my main machine, but will the VM keep clicking and moving the mouse then?
