I shudder at the thought of having to talk to DR8C0, but he knows of a place where you can get them custom made to say what you want and much higher quality than the chink shit you've got. I think his plan (which fell through) was to have the UID go to his Tumblr.

UIDs don't work like that

Korea is basically the same place, you know that. I don't know what the point is, don't shoot the messenger.

Also I believe he had some plan of getting a QR rather than a UID and I just fucked up in my thinking. I do definitely remember he wanted something stupid like that though.

Alright, so the right shift of my Noppoo Choc isn't working. I already desoldered the switch and put a new one in, but no dice. The PCB isn't damaged around the switch and I don't know what else it could be at this point. Any advice or is it fucked?

>>
>>53936932
lolwut? What keyboard is that? Why are the cherry blues that color?
Why are omrons and cherry switches on the same board? Why would they do that?
>>
>>53937694
Might be gateron blues or sth else.
>>
>>53937650
Looking through them right now. It's so tempting to get a cadet keyset even though I don't even write Lisp. I just really like it.
>>
>>53937694
As I said. Navy blues.
>>53937755
genuine cherry
>>
>>53937536
The first switch didn't work, which I tested extensively and opened. The second one doesn't register either, so I guess there's a defect on the PCB. What do you mean with tracks?
>>
>>53937869
It sounds like you're approaching debugging all wrong. Do you have a multimeter? Check all the tracks on the PCB that connect the specific switch. If the issue is here then it's generally very easy to fix. If you somehow managed to short a track (how the fuck would you do this though?) then the pin on the chip is probably borked. If you find this to be the case then there are a few options but they're all a lot more work.
>>
Just killed my cherry mx red keyboard with some coffee.
what should i do with it?
>>
>>53937948
define "killed"
>>
>>53937925
I see. I'm not the best electrical engineer out there - I had a switch not work before and just exchanged it so it worked again, that's why I tried it with this one as well. The PCB tracks look alright, how would I go about testing with a multimeter? I have one here.
>>
>>53937787
I doubt more than two of the people getting space cadet caps use lisp.
>>
>>53938029
What, are you saying there aren't a ton of people in the MK community who need to type Cyrillic or Hangul?
>>
>>53938021
turn the meter to measure resistance, pretty much any range will do. place one pin on the pad where the switch should be and the other pin on the leg of the chip where that track should run to. if the resistance is zero then you're good to go (the track is okay), if the resistance shows 1 (or infinity, depends on your meter), then the track is broken. repeat on the other side. if you mess up what pad runs to what leg you will also see the meter show either infinity or a large value.
you can check your switch in the same manner, put the meter pins on the switch legs, measure resistance when the switch is not pressed and when it's pressed.
>>
>>53938067
what does that have to do with using lisp? do you know what lisp is, anon?
>>
>>53938100
Right on, going to try this tommorow. Appreciate your help.
>>
>>53937963

What keyboard would you recommend as someone's first mechanical?

I have to buy a keyboard and after some time seeing this threads and admiring how some of your mechanical keyboards look I'd like to get my first one.

As a programmer I think I'll enjoy the difference, but beyond being mechanical I don't need anything fancy. Just an intro keyboard.

What would you recommend for a starter?

>Budget
Ideally 70€ max. If that's too tight please suggest what's the cheapest 'decent' (as in something that I won't immediately regret buying) keyboard that you can come up with.
>Location (continent at least)
Europe, Spain
>Preferred switch type
No idea.
>Form factor
60 - 80%, no numpad
>Backlight
Yes if possible.
>>
>>53938201
probably shorted a lot of stuff. you can try fixing it but i doubt i would bother. salvage the switches, the caps and the case, if it's of interest, and move on.

"Stock prices start at around 70$ for cheaper boards (40$ if you want knockoff switches like Kailh) and can go over 250$. If you live in Europe add ~30$ to the price"

Though it's not exactly a replacement, http://pexonpcs.co.uk/products/filco-keyboard-mods?variant=839028751

That would give you a normal large USB-port at the end sticking out (they don't do micro/mini usbs anymore sadly)

>>
>>53939887

I suppose.

There are 5 wires on the cable I posted. If I cut the detachable usb cable that connected the keyboard to my pc, am I gonna find the same 5 wires inside it meaning I could just wrap them up together?
>>
>>53940210
yes, but you need to check which pin is which, you can do this easily with a multimeter.
>>
>>53940270
>with a multimeter

My dad has one. What would I be looking for in this case when using one? I mean, what tells me it's the right cable?
>>
>>53940270
I actually just cut the wire up and it has 5 cables with the same colors as the ones in the cable I posted I think it's safe to assume the colors will match, right? lol
>>
>>53940310
if your dad one he can probably teach you how.

anywho, break the cables apart and clean their ends so you can measure them nicely. switch to resistance and put on measure pin on a cable and then use the other measure pin on the usb pins to find which one is connected to it. if there's a connection, the resistance will be 0, otherwise infinite.

Is this Ozone brand any good?

I'm in search for reds and literally the only ones I've found with a decent price where I live is this Ozone Strike Battle Red. It has this ugly red backplate but it actually fits inside the standard casing of other keyboards and I have one to spare from a coolermaster POS I have.

Keys randomly fail when I'm typing or stop registering after some time if I keep holding them. Some LEDs on it died out even though I don't even use them. I heard that was a massive problem with the first version of it and that they did a revision.

I really don't like coolermaster as a brand at all because this keyboard was actually what I got after I RMAed a CM storm stealth that presented every defect you could possibly imagine. It was actually discontinued because the whole thing was a POS.

which board is that? I've been looking for a nice TKL board and that one looks good, the granite caps I have would look nice with it.
>>

Literally every TKL looks the same

Just get a QFR if you want to save money, or get get some other meme TKL if you want to waste money.

Sure, get a memefire and suffer from the same shit as >>53941830. Single sided pcb keyboards suck.
>>
>>53943565
The QFR and Rapid-i are not made by the same manufacturer.
>>
>>53943703
but they have the same flaws
>>
>>53943703
Regular QFR and QFR Stealth are though. Both of them made by costar, and both suck exactly because they have single sided PCBs.
>>
>>53943723
I know, right? The QFR is so bad 100% of the switch LEDs are dead on arrival!
>>
>>53943565

My QFR has been good for years. I didn't even clean it for like 2 years then did two switch swaps on it later and here we are. Still great. It's still my #1 choice for a new cheap keyboard. If you're lucky you can get 'em for like $65. Cheap keycaps and rubber coating are the only downsides IMO.

I'm still waiting to receive it, but I'm sure it will be a good first one. It costs about 70 € in aliexpress and it's available with different switches. Only thing to keep in mind is that it has the American layout, and that you'll have to get used to it. Shipping is free.

I bought a MagicForce. This board usually comes with OUTEMU mechanical switches for $40. But when I found a version of this keyboard with Cherry MX Greens for only $89, buying it was an easy decision.

I wanted a 60% keyboard. I was considering the Pok3r with Cherry MX Blue switches for $129, but I eventually decided that I couldn't do without dedicated arrow keys. For the price, I was expecting the MagicForce to be lower quality than what I've received and I'm pleasantly surprised by this keyboard. I think that it's a hidden gem. Will definitely have to replace the keycaps, but I was likely going to do that regardless of what board I purchased.
>>
>>53948254
Not as fan of the font and the windows keys are fucking disgusting.
I've heard great things about the keyboards though
>>
>>53945000
Cherry MX Board 3.0 with wrist rest - 80 bucks
Ducky Shine 4 + Aftermarket caps (and shipping and customs) - 300 bucks
HHKB - 220 bucks
AEK II build project - 30 bucks
Magicforce - 50 bucks
240 Gaterons - 66 bucks or so
Teensy + other stuff for handwiring magicforce - 30 bucks

So about 770 bucks.

I do. It's a sturdy keyboard. Very little flex when I twist it. Everything works.

The only thing I don't like about it is the light blue backlighting, but I turned that off by holding down the fn key and clicking the down arrow several times.

All in all, I would buy it again. No regrets. It's a great price for what you get.

riddle me this /mkg/
I have a model M that's working just fine, in fact I'm using it to type this
BUT
every time I turn on my PC for the first time every day the keyboard never works, it only starts registering after a reboot
from a cold boot it only has the numlock on which I can disable but not enable again
I restart the PC and it works perfectly.
the connector is PS2
what is this sorcery?
>>
>>53949982
buy a better keyboard
>>
>>53949982

Is it an AT connector version? Most PS2 ports don't put out enough power for those, you need something like http://www.amazon.com/SANOXY-PS2-Keyboard-USB-Adapter/dp/B000BSJFJS to supply more.

>>
>>53950065
Exactly. Only the cool kids have pastels on they're keyboards
>>
>>53950092

There might be just barely enough at first. If it shares a bus with other ports, anything could cause it to drop, but you're most likely undervolting it either way.

PS2 isn't plug and play, so it takes a restart to see it again. That adapter will definitely solve your issue.
>>
>>53950062
>>53950113
Which is why you get custom keycaps after the fact. However, that's gonna be a bit of a pickle since the right side of the bottom row, as well as the shift are non-standard sizes. Not impossible to find sets that would fit, but it's not as easy as regular layouts. Going with blank keycaps obviously makes it easier.
>>
>>53950176
I'd get blanks in a heartbeat, but the weird layout made me just accept that I'll be stuck with the same shitty edgy keycaps forever.

The perfect solution would be to get a blank 88-key WASD keyboard, but even the MK84 is pretty expensive for a keyboard for me.
>>
>>53936932
>you will never get your third mechanical keyboard cause it has to be the last one you get and you might aswell get a k type
>>
>>53950280
If you go for blanks you have loads of options. Just go for a set with full 104 keys, then you'll have plenty of spare keycaps from the keypad, arrow keys, and such. Then literally the only keycap you need to worry about is the off-size right Shift, but many blank keysets come with extra keys that could fit that. Just search for something that has blank keys and a 1.5u shift
>>
>>53950391
>>53950280
Scrap that, it looks like it's a 1.75u keycap, not 1.5, so search for that instead
>>
>>53950280
And after a bit of searching, this set has a 1.75u shift that will fit your board, if you don't mind the colors.
http://www.amazon.com/Vortex-Double-Shot-Mechanical-Keyboard-Keycaps/dp/B013KPX9E0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1460213719&sr=8-2&keywords=pbt+keycap+vortex
>>
>>53950459
And at this point I realize that I just don't care enough about this sort of stuff. Not the first time.

Thanks for all the advice, I'll just stick to my trusty old Logitech G103 and save a hundred dollars.

please point me to where they are currently selling translucent keycaps for backlit keyboards.

There do exist some keycap sets on massdrop and elsewhere with high quality plastic and transparent legends though.

Most people don't realize that mechanical keyboards is a very niche business once you venture from the gamer market. If you ask for something it's sometimes not available right now.
Products appear and disappear in the blink of an eye. Good stuff becomes sold out, shops close and group buys end.
Thankfully the cycle will start over with a product similar to whatever was missed popping up within 2-3 months. All you have to do is discover good sources for news and products and monitor them.

TL;DR: LURK MOAR

Shortages are just kind of s common thing for mechanical keyboards. It's not a major market and shit comes and goes. I waited about a year to get a while Filco with MX Blues switches and had to settle for a top print because the side prints sold out instantly, and that was over three years ago.

>>53956050
There are certain situations where backlighting can look alright, but for the most part it really is just trash. I also think it's hilarious that people act like they need lights to see their keys. If you've got a monitor, chances are you can see your keys.

got a kb with mx whites a few days ago, heavily worn in keys + keycaps, but I was rly surprised with how dank they are to type on honestly. My experiences with clicky MX tech keys in the past was limited at oetemu blues (I have a model F and a model meme tho), and I was pretty surprised by these, pretty satisfying to type on because they're not retard-loud but still feel 'full' when typing on them
>>

I think those are some ancient MX whites. Their stem used to be translucient for some time, found some in old typewriters as well. They should be weighted like modern MX Blues though. Very nice find.

Vintage Type A: 80 cN, translucent white stem, black click-slider — 1987–?
Vintage Type B: 50 cN, translucent white stem, translucent white click-slider — 1989–?

board is a chicony 5160AT. There's no mention of MX white as a possibility for this board though, and I'm too retarded to understand what a 'click slider' is in this context so I can't give an answer to which it is for sure.

>I'm too retarded to understand what a 'click slider' is in this context
A slider that produces a clicky noise, i.e. a clicky switch.

Hm, I'm not too sure whether those are actually MX-Whites. Can you make a vocaroo of you pressing the keys softer, maybe without bottoming out?

This is what modern Whites sound like (there are some hardclicking switches in there... I'll desolder them soon and replace them)

Shine 5 or Corsair K70
>>
>>53958253
on boards like this you should look at keycaps, case, functuality. what do you want from a keyboard and how do you want that. I'd say go for ducky because I like that brand better, but no experience with both brands.
>>
new here, which is the poorfag's mech keyboard? tenkeyless ofc for lowest price possible
>>
>>53958340
Quickfire rapid.
>>
>>53958253
I have both. I prefer my Shine, to be honest. Though, I do use MX Blacks on the Shine as opposed to MX Reds on my K70.

Both are brilliant keyboards, but the Shine excels at keycaps and the fact that is has a removable cable. The K70 has just the bare aluminium plate, as the Shine has a plastic frame on top. I'm torn between what makes the lighting look better, but I'm leaning towards the Ducky's.

The one area where the K70 (RGB version) wins over the Shine is full customisability of the backlight. The Shine only has a limited amount of presets, and these are changed using the FN + F5-F12 keys. K70 has Corsair's software and gives you endless amounts of colour customisation.
>>
>>53949143
where does one acquire these
>>
>>53958432
Are you allowed to save individual keys as a color on the ducky? I have been searching for the answer but haven't found anything.

For example, if I want the numbers red, and have WASD as white and then rest blue.

>>
>>53958534
You can on the Shine 4 with red/blue/anything shade of purple but I don't know about the shine 5
>>
>>53958564
Backlighting can show through even thick caps. It depends on more than just thickness: things like colour, plastic formulation, etc. I remember a lot of whining about how there was light bleed through the GMK Triumph Adler.

>>53958534
Sort of. You can change the colour of WASD and the arrow keys, but you don't have much control over them. They can either be red, green, white and blue (for each key, preset) or they can do a colour change animation. That's it, though.

Pic related. WASD is constantly changing colours and the arrowkeys are solid.
>>
>>53958648
You can't set a color within the RGB range ? This makes me sad :(
>>
>>53958668
Not for WASD and the arrow keys as a separate zone for themselves, no.

You can change the colour of the entire keyboard with the RGB range, though.
>>
>>53958743
I suppose I could set every key besides WASD as a solid color, and then use the RGB range mode for just the four ?

This makes me reconsider the ducky, I have to thin kabout how much this matters to me

WASD/arrow keys only have two modes: colour changing or solid red, green white and blue. You can't choose a single solid colour. It sucks, I know.
