I use an external 1920x1080 as my primary along with external keyboard/mouse.

Using the laptop's 1366x768 as extra screen space almost feels forced and annoying.

Are there smarter ways to use the 1366x768 laptop display? For example to permanently show emails, FB messages, news, programming documentation?

Watch performance with your tool of choice like task manager

Don't have a second monitor just for the sake of having a second monitor. Statusbars, feeds etc that serve no immediate purpose are simply distractions. If you find yourself in need of a particular thing, then by all means use it and see if it makes your workflow more efficient, but adding random junk just for the sake of not letting monitor space go to waste is doing yourself a disservice.

This.

I intentionally went from two monitors to one.

Two monitors is just ADD-inducing if you don't have a specific purpose for it.

This.

Don't try to make a use for it. Use it if you have a use.

It depends of the task you are doing.
For example, if I'm doing homework, I got one screen for my notes / problems and the other for Maple / Matlab / Excel.
If I'm only browsing /g/, the second monitor is mostly useless, I usually put my music player on the second screen.

Anyone run with their lid closed? My chinkpad gets super dusty even though I hardly use the screen on it, but I'm concerned about it venting heat out of the keyboard and onto the display.

I'm running a closed thinkpad and that works fine. If you have a macbook you shouldn't run it closed. The vents in the back of the macbook are physically closed when the lid is closed, so running it closed will make the cooling less efficient which will impact performance.

I run my dankpad closed in a dock all the time. My keyboard doesnt become noticeably hot unless im running in the 90s.
