Recovering Fried HDD?

I don't think it's fried, but maybe it is.
I had this laptop about 3-4 years ago and when I set it down, my screen froze. I let it sit for a while and it didn't change so I had to turn it off manually. When I turned it back on, it wasn't working and I had to go into some screen. It said my hdd wasn't connected or something but i opened the bottom of my laptop and it was there. some boards said I had to install windows again or get a new hdd. I already have a new laptop and I was wondering if it was possible to move all of the contents (implying it still has all of the files) into a usb or something? Like can I take it to the shop and they can move all of the stuff into a new portable harddrive I can buy?
Also do you think thhe repairers would look at my files. I'm pretty sure I have a lot of porn on there.
