I don't see what's wrong, it was inevitable considering the shittiness of Java and the beauty of Swift. I don't even do Swift programming as a main, nor have I used Objective-C which makes Swift look even better apparently, but it is featureful and not Java

Apple uses a Unix based OS.
Unix and Linux are basically twins, with similar focuses as far as functionality goes.
Why does it surprise you that Google would adopt a programming language developed by a company that is Unix, for a Linux based Android?

Highly doubt it,
Google has the Go language which they're pretty invested in.
Also Kotlin has 100% interop with java so it's the path of least resistance, but it won't remove their little legal problems with Oracle.

Google is not 1 person. I'm sure a number of their employees have seen what a meme Go is. And the legal issues don't make it the path of least resistance. Like the anon up there said, Swift was made for *nix-based OSes, so it would be easy for Android to start adopting it
