Why are all laptops so fucking ugly, /g/?

I'm looking to buy my first laptop and they just look so awful. All the laptops that have some sort of good looking design has some sort of flaw that makes it not worth buying

Macbook = mac os
Chromebook pixel = overpriced as shit and chromium os

Is there any other laptop that is aesthetically pleasing as a Chromebook pixel or do I have to have to throw my autism aside to buy a laptop?
>>
>>53909895

I really like the Chromebook pixel, but what is the point of paying $1300 for it?

It's the whole laptop format which is old as fuck. Laptops are kinda hitting a plateau, they don't have much room for exploration. So they just get stupidly thinner, which puts an unnecessary strain on the performance.

You can't justify getting a laptop today unless you're a student or oldfag corporate whore who is required to use one for work or study. Laptops are useless for anything else today. And they kinda look dated, as a computer form factor.

Anything that doesn't have a big screen today should fit in your pocket, because that's realistically the only computing device you will need on the go. Nobody needs a laptop outside of their house or workplace ( where you should always use something with a big screen anyway).

And if you actually need some mobile device with a bigger screen you can use a 2 in 1 like the surface.

I own a CF-30 and a CF-47, and I highly recommend them.
They're easy to work on, since everything is held together with latches and screws, and not this snap in place bullshit that most manufacturers do, there's ample space in them for upgrades and modification, the battery life can't be beat, they're cheap on the secondhand market, they're nearly indestructible, they have nice keyboards and touchscreens, they have a carrying handle, you can attack a strap to them, and a bunch of other little things that make them a pleasure to use.
Also the screen makes a satisfying sound when you close it.
10/10 would buy again.

>>
>>53911179
I agree with you about both, and I know how to fix them.
Since you mentioned passive cooling, I assume all the ones you have are CF-30s and not CF-31s.
Most CF-30s come with 2GB of slow as fuck DDR2 that nobody ever bothers to upgrade. Changing out mine to 4GB of RAM made a huge difference, since it didn't have to constantly use the pagefile. The stock thermal compound on them is subpar and wears out very quickly. Just replacing it with some el cheapo ceramic paste from radioshack dropped my average temps by 20C. There's also an issue with "hkeyapp.exe" where it eats all of your CPU, so you want to make sure that you only run it if you need to enable/disable a function key.

With the 13" MBP, throttling only happens with simultaneous CPU + GPU stress. It handles CPU load just fine.

The impressive battery life is thanks to a 75 Wh battery, most competing laptops are in the 50 Wh range.

I don't even know what you're talking about, "FOSS hardware" isn't a thing. If you mean firmware then no, I'm pretty sure you can run Asus C201 on a fully free stack using Libreboot and a wifi dongle. If you mean actual open hardware, it is dependent on the manufacturer releasing detailed specification data, which is obviously almost non-existent in the industry. In either case, you are straight up wrong since stuff like the OLinuXino boards exist and both those and C201 are ARM. Stop spewing bullshit.

>tfw better battery life and performance than El Crapitan

>>
>>53913223

If there is one thing from sci fi that I hope it happens, is that there will be no more laptops, computers, televisions, consoles or smartphones anymore, you just carry around a minuscular device, place it somewhere and the screen is projected in front of you, and you can resize it at will, and customize it with whatever software you want.

A shame I'd probably be dead when this becomes a reality. I hate carrying stuff around.
>>
>>53913297
I actually think this sort of technology is only a decade away. A "minuscule device" like you say would be more challenging, but imagine having something the size of today's smartphones with a screen that could expand to 10x its original size and a keyboard that could be projected on any flat surface in front of it.

>You do realise taste on what 'looks good' is highly subjective, right?
This is a flawed argument. Taste is subjective, but that doesn't mean shit is as popular a dish as pizza. People generally like pizza and dislike shit. Similarly, most people think the macbook and the pixel look good. Few people think big and bulky laptops with no coherent design look good, which is why pretty much only teenagers and autists buy alienware laptops.

Instead of going full autist with gender studies tier relativism when someone says they want a laptop that looks good, you can just assume they mean something with a coherent, streamlined design that gives the user a sense of quality.

The guy you replied to.
You're asking /g/. Go talk to /fit/ if you're just looking for a nice accessory.
My laptop gets the job done, it's over priced, and is good at what it does. No, I do not think that Thinkpads are sexy, but since I travel around a lot (daily), I like that it's not too heavy but not some flimsy POS either. The tracker on the keyboard is perfect for me because I don't like to move off the keyboard too much.
I have reasons to use what I use outside of "it looks good".
That's why I got pissed. You're asking advice for advice about an accessory, and not about a device with actual function.

>Why does this meme even exist? Are people really so stupid that they can't type without the keys literally glowing in their face?

Fuck you and your moronic misuse of the word "literally". Not everything that is glowing is "glowing in your face" so lights that are dim and aimed up instead of your face are not in your face. Unless of course you type by rolling your face on the keyboard.

I have needed backlit keyboard anyway, so it's not just a meme. If there's some special character that I use less than once per month I might forget where it is when I need it. Also even if I don't watch the keyboard the lights help me aim my hand position when laying and at the same time being in weird position for typing something. In dark bedrooms where you can't see anything about your keyboard the backlight helps. Of course it might seem like nothing if you only use it in well lit office.

>>
>>53914640
Not really.
Sure, you're average consumer is concerned with looks.
The average consumer wants something that isn't a hassle to carry around, looks good, and impresses others, yes. But that's why tablets are a better choice over a laptop in that sense.
I don't use a laptop because I'm an average consumer. So if you're looking for a laptop you should be thinking beyond what the average consumer thinks about.
>>
>>53914658
Well, yes, it kinda is.
I'm not a full on RMS-Autist for FOSS. But I heavily prefer my software to be Libre to an extent. Most of these products that promise function and form usually take away a lot of freedom to have it. And without freedom, I don't have much use for the functions.
