I don't have any good advice then. It's a difficult course of study that's hard to monetize but man, I'd love to be skilled enough to have the option of becoming "professional" and not as in the "touring/recording musician" way but like, really classically trained. You might have a hard time paying off loans, but are you sure you'll be all right with having passed up the chance to study at a conservatory? I might be projecting, but that's the first thing that comes to mind.

My advice to you would be to give the music a solid shot if it's something you would like to do.
I was extremely anxious that I had made the wrong decision choosing music, and it eventually broke me. I don't regret spending the time I did studying music, because now I know who I am and am much more confident in my decision to pursue this career path knowing that I don't have to worry about 'what could have been'.

You might be able to twist the wires back together and hold them there/shield them from each other with tape. The colored wires are probably enamel coated with nylon filament for reinforcement; brush them with a lighter flame to burn this off before twisting together. Don't do it for too long and burn up your wires.
