Have any of you tards ever used FVWM? What'd you think about it and on a scale of 1-10 how based is it?

Pic related it's FVWM.

Looks kinda dope
I really enjoy KDE, but I've been thinking about trying to set up a more minimal wm with krunner, and just using that. I'll give it a look.
>>

When every DE will depend on systemd, I'll switch to fvwm

No looks fine. I'll give it a try.

I'll try in it: http://linuxbbq.org/
>>
>>53881111
fvwm can't do antialiased borders

if you just ditch the corners it could still look pretty nice.
>>
>>53881200
Forgot about linuxbbq. I still need to try that out some time. I have a soft spot in my heart for debian, it was the first distro I ever used and it was the distro that breathed 3 more years of life into a decade plus old computer. It also turned my macbook into less of a giant bag of turds, so that's always a plus.

There are a lot of crappy FVWM setups out there.

A FVWM thread? On 4chan? Someone pinch me.
>>
How about MVWM? It's basically a cleanup effort for FVWM. FVWM it's nice and it's documentation is nice but it's absolutely massive. Not sure how active development is.
>>
Only fork of it worth a grain of salt is metisse

It always amazes me when software can look like a total 80s barf fest then some amazing people come along and actually make it look not only nice but modern.
>>
>>53882318
Never heard of it. What makes it best fork/only fork?
>>
Nice aesthetics.
>>
>>53882395
Lots of cool features like you can duplicate parts of the screen and redirect input and shit. There's videos on YouTube of people making toolbars on the fly.

And of course it had full compositor and let you flip around Windows, scale them arbitrarily, etc
>>
>>53882465
Might need to look into that then. Thanks, anon.
>>
Alright, I'm convinced.

Anybody know of a getting started guide for FVWM? I've looked around a bit but haven't found anything yet. Will post again if I do.
>>
>>53884495
nevermind I'm just a moron, there's one on the links page on the site itself.
http://fvwmforums.org/beginnersguide/

The link to the page with that guide 404'd from google's results but there's an updated link on fvwm's home page

FVWM2 >>>>> FVWM
I might get around to posting a screenshot from my OpenBSD desktop running fvwm later if this thread is still up.
>>
>>53884595
Man I didn't realize how many FVWM forks there were.

What makes FVWM2 better than other forks?
>>
>>53884595
Is it even a fork? I installed fvwm and it comes with a fvwm2 binary.

That screenshot looks awesome. Kys.
>>
>>53880941
Looks kinda like GNOME
>>
>>53885228
It's not about material design you tard it's about having exaggerated pseudo 3D effects attached to every possible edge and border. It's like they invented borders to put places just so they could bevel them. Like on the title bar and the corners of the window decorations and even on the boxes surrounding selections like in the CDE color editor over there and even on the title of the menu they drew 6 lines just so they could bevel them what the crap.

I hate it because it's a waste of space and obscures meaning. Same reasons I hate material design. I mean seriously, even some of the freaking text is beveled.

Maybe if you spent more than 2 and a half seconds ricing it.

Here, take this to get you started with something that already looks mildly okay and build off that

There is FVWM and FVWM2. I was introduced to it via FVWM95 on Mandrake 6.1 back inna day. If you install OpenBSD and during installation you set the flag to have xdm start at boot, your default desktop will be the original FVWM.
>>
>>53885358

that was how it was back then. EVERYTHING was designed like that; Win3.1 on up, CDE, IRIX, fuckin everything!

And it was all awful. Not quite as awful as that screenshot though, on other platforms it wasn't so freaking exaggerated.

Here, look at this screenshot of Win3.1
There's a consistency to it. Not only is the beveling subtler, it's also used much, much more sparingly. Only ever on buttons and objects that can be interacted with. It indicates that the object is to be interacted with. It doesn't spray grooved borders everywhere for no reason and it doesn't exaggerate them with blown out highlighted edges. The marks on the corners are not great but I'll let it slide since it's not beveled.

Same story for CDE

They clearly indicate a purpose when they aren't forced into every nook and cranny that will fit them.
>>
>>53885292
I like GNOME. At least, I like the look of GNOME with a nice theme like Xenlism or Apricity.

Maybe I'll try this.
>>
Welp looks like I need to dig out FVWM. I kind of gave up on it last time and went back to openbox but I basically started from scratch last time.
>>
>>53887425
So even with a nice-ish base it's not easy. Time to dive into the man pages, see you scrubs in a few weeks.
>>
>>53890039
Screw it, I'm going back to bspwm. Looks just as nice as fvwm but takes half as long to set up.
>>
>>53880928
Used it for a few months while running OpenBSD, it gets a solid 8 or 9
