I'm really torn /hsg/. I've been asked by my uni to head up a student managed rack, including colo.

I'm probably going to donate and colo most of my servers into the new rack along with directing the purchase of some others, but it's going to leave my home rack really empty, but at least my hardware will be getting more use...

when they get cheap enough to be relevant for low I/O stuff.
I have a smallish SSD in my PC to hold the OS, but a 2TB one for my gaymen and archival urges?
I could get 6x 3TB HDDs for the 600 eurobucks that SSD would cost me.
18TB, or 9TB in RAID 1, though in that scenario I'd probably go for 12TB using RAID 6.
>>
>>53879836
SSDs still aren't quite suitable for archival purposes, unless you have quite a loose definition of archival. Notably, they tend to have poor data retention when left powered down. But certainly for gaming and general media hoarding, that seems reasonable if expensive.

Depends, really, what your compute needs are.
I have seen anything from Raspis to fully populated racks in these threads.
In ascending order of computational power, I'd recommend
Raspi
used business laptop (dell/lenovo/hp)
(maybe NUC)
used business workstation (dell/lenovo/hp)
racks

My t420 serves me well at low power. If I didn't have those external drives I wouldn't even need a UPS, as the laptop has its own battery.

tldr; estimate your future needs and buy accordingly.

/hsg/, I need hard drive recommendations
the server I was using for my hypervisor and ultimately my dev environment has had 2 out of 4 of it's drives go bad, and the raid 5 set is completely gone now
I want to re-purpose it into a kind of NAS box, I'm looking mainly at 2TB 7200 rpm drives because I want to use it partly for NFS datastores for virtual machines, and just general network storage
has anyone else done something like this? would I be taking much of a performance hit?
what are the best drives for this? I would like to keep the drive cost down

You're not hiring people, you get to configure all the actual software shit yourself which is the actual meaningful part. The actual hardware for a home server you barely do anything since your network topology should be really simple. Plus hosting a public website from your home connection is dumb and a good way to get kicked off it or forced into an expensive business plan. AWS servers are cheap and even have a free option, just do that.

Also software just depends on what you're comfortable with, comfortable with Windows more? Windows Server. Like Linux more? Linux server. Probably CentOS would be a good bet.

>>
>>53890008

All of them. Literally any computer with a network connection and some storage can be a NAS. Use ethernet and not wifi if you know whats good for you.
>>
>>53890041
but would a low-mid end computer really make a decent nas?
>>
>>53890113
Well if you were going to put it in a server rack feeding data to a few dozen hungry VMs, no, it'd be shit. But you aren't doing that, you're just storing some stuff and occasionally retrieving it. Probably only one user at a time (you). That's a very undemanding job, a Pentium 2 could do it.
>>
>>53879836
Why RAID6? I never understood the advantage of 6 over 1+spares.
>>
>>53890352
The idea of RAID 6 is that a drive dies, you replace it and start the rebuild. But resilvering an array takes a long time these days because hard drives are huge. With RAID 5 if you lose a drive during that process, you're fucked, everything's gone. RAID 6 can survive a second failure during that time.

Same thing applies comparing it to RAID 1. Have a RAID 1, a drive dies, now you have a vulnerable period during the rebuild where if another drive bites it, you lose everything. I guess you could have a three-drive RAID 1, but now you're only getting 33% of the capacity of your disks, whereas RAID 6 gives you (n-2)/n.
>>
>>53890113
yeah as long as you have enough SATA ports for however many drives you want. Software RAID would slow it down a little, but if you do backups rather than RAID it's fine
>>

>>53892300
>80W tdp
Oh wow, lol. Okay, that's much lower than I expected
>>
>>53892250
I have all my media in HDDs in my personal rig

then I have a server full of HDDs that makes backups of all of it. So if a hard drive dies or I fuck up and get cryptolocker or I delete the wrong thing, I don't lose any data.

also the server can be a quiet low-power thing that I leave on all the time, so if I want my stuff from my laptop, my desktop doesn't have to be on.

>>53892263
depends on which xeon. they make a lot of low-power ones. There's big demand for that from datacenters, since if you have a whole datacenter full of servers, you pay twice for every watt of power - once for the electricity, and once for the A/C to remove the heat it makes. Save five watts each on ten thousand servers and you can cut your power draw by 100 kilowatts. That adds up to big savings mighty quickly.

then again sometimes you just gotta go fast so there's big 140/165W ones too.

Worth getting an old mac mini g4 for that? I assume if it's just sharing an HD video the age of the computer shouldn't matter right? I see them on craigslist for 20$ all the time. Could always spend a little and get a core 2 duo mini for cheap as well.
