Follow up: Do people only seed because they need to get a good ratio to download their stuff?
I think in those tighter communities people actually want to seed. The same I seed my stuff because it is the right thing to do.
Now if this is true, what is the point of a ration requirement (which reading about private trackers made me believe there is)?
It seems to me that forcing everyone to have a ration of at least 2 (uploading twice as much as they download) cannot mathematically work out if applied to the whole community. Not _everyone_ can have a ratio of 2 (correct me if im wrong).
So how does that work? Again it seems to me that it doesnt make sense to enforce a > 1 ratio for everyone as long as you still have plentiful seeders. There has to be some mechanism to allow people with less than 1 ratio to download so others can get more ratio.
Also this ratio chasing seems to create actually useless bandwith where a lot of people might download something just to seed and not because they want it. If enough people do that you get a "circlejerk" of people seeding to eachother without any of them being interested in the file, just the seeding.

1.0 is the recommended ratio. 0.6 is acceptable. It is not a 0 sum game. Freeleech events allow you to make buffer, without sacrificing the other person's ratio

Yep in some trackers, they do donations for GBs. Other trackers if you seed stuff for a long time you get bonus points (eve if no one downloads your shit) which you can exchange for GBs
Some trackers also have a mandatory seeding period, where if you stop seeding you will get a warning or be banned.Its usually small tho

In the beginning maybe / partially, but on higher tier trackers most people are good enough users where their ratio doesn't really matter (because from regular use they get enough), or some trackers are ratioless. It's not a completely closed economy. There are things like freeleech pretty common.

Yeah, freeleech and bonus point systems. You can convert bonus points into upload credit on a lot of trackers. It depends on the tracker.

This is true to a large extent, and I guess you'll have to compare the cost of people's bandwidth, storage, and time against the goals that freeleech accomplishes, of which I can name three.
1. Freeleech is a pretty straightforward way of pumping extra upload credit into the economy. You don't need to come up with formulas for bonus point schemes, just adjust the amount of freeleech up or down as needed. The problem with this is the disproportionate advantage that people with seedboxes get. Request bounties help with transferring that credit to slower uploaders to some extent, but it's enough of a problem that What just outlawed automated freeleech snatching.
2. Freeleech does help with retention. Any album that becomes a FL pick on What is going to get copied several hundred times. Even if most of those get deleted, you're still probably going to end up with more long-term seeders than you had before.
3. People actually do end up checking FL picks out. If I picked an album I really liked for FL and even less than 1% of the snatchers end up giving it a listen, I'd be happy.
Points 2 and 3 definitely vary from tracker to tracker. The seeder surge system on TC doesn't feel like it works as well as it's supposed to, and there's another tracker where I really am just downloading worthless garbage to get credit. And there are places with extremely easy economies where things also get well-seeded. (Like rutracker. I don't know how they do it.) Every tracker's different. What seems to be making it work more or less okay, though. I think it'd be nice if they did more to encourage moving credit from the hoarders to the request bounties.

As long as you keep your account's ratio in order you can do just about anything you want. The best way to keep a good ratio going is simply by downloading the 300 smallest torrents. That way you gain like 100 bp/hor and can remove 4GB download from your ratio every day.

AHD remuxes are generally better and they have the widest selection, but HDB remuxes aren't all bad. I think for movies remux is always a must and agree that encodes have become a bit of a meme, but for TV shows I generally go with encodes because of the sheer size that remuxes would be, for example one of my favorite shows, The Sopranos, to have the entire series in remuxes would be several TB, now multiply that by dozens of TV series and you have an absurd amount of disk space occupied. Hey guys I don't usually spoil what happens, but I will make an exception for today (I'm a time traveller):
312c will eventually lose his staff position, which will be good news for a lot of people. But it will create a rift so huge in PTP that it will break the tracker apart and fade into nothingness. After a while there will be another one created by some of the old staff/encoders, but won't be as good as the original.
All this will happen in the next 5-10 years.

I got banned from WCD some time ago, took the interview and all was fine, got back in, looked at my old account page and within minutes I was banned. The only logical explanation is they watched what page I visited, they possibly have some sort of trigger warning setup to detect when people do suspicious things. Either way, I think this needs to be possible within Gazelle itself for then to see what pages people visit.

1. Find a torrent that has been upped on more than one tracker.
2. Download one torrent and start leeching.
3. While it's still leeching download the identical torrent from another site and start leeching.
