old microwaves last forever
new microwaves will just stop cooking your food
they won't even sound broken, the magnetron will just stop working
>>53874120
It's insane. My grandmother had one that had to have been made in the 70s. She replaced it last year and I don't think it was because it stopped working.
It had a big dial on the front you turned to set the cook time and had 2 settings -- Cook and Defrost. I somehow doubt it was even properly shielded.

While the low energy is not considered to cause cancer, it is good practice to avoid it out of an abundance of cation.
Also the radiation will hurt your eyes, like starring at the sun too long. This is why later versions added the mesh grate over the window to help prevent users from damaged and even completely losing their eye sight.

Actually the oldest piece of tech I regularly use is a Samsung 245BW I bought back in 2007 (along with a Das Keyboard II I got around the same time). Still works, still looks good... probably gonna replace it though, but I barely ever use my desktop these days so it's not high up on the list.
I think the one we use the most that is oldest is definitely the fucking russian microwave that I have in my apartment. It's like 20 years old. Goddamn thing is a monster. Everything works like a charm, buttons etc. Cooks shit nicely, too.

I haven't ever done anything to it except add a few drops of oil. I don't think it has ever been serviced or repaired otherwise except for a replacement plug end. All the wiring is still original.
I believe it is in need of replacement "shims" on the rotor shaft though. If the tilt is set to straight or tilted back, it makes a bit of a ticking noise. When tilted down slightly (as I prefer it anyway because it's pointed right at my bed) it still runs very quietly.
There's really no good reason a fan should die in a couple years. The hair thing concerns me because I've never even noticed hairs getting into a fan. I'm not sure how that even happens. Pets maybe? Other than oiling you really shouldn't have to do any maintenance. I've noticed that many modern fans lack ports for regular oiling, though, in which case it seems they don't intend you to do it.
A lot of fans use a capacitor for starting which can fail, but it would have to be one seriously junk capacitor to fail after two years. My Westinghouse is one of the first fans ever made with a capacitor, and it should probably be replaced, but it still works 82 years later.
