There are a lot of people that buy high resolution tvs, monitors, and phones without ever actually using any media that is made for the resolution. I know a guy that dropped the tens of thousands that the 4k tv's were priced at on launch and then he went straight to watching his dvd's that weren't even in 1080p.

A higher resolution is obviously going to look slightly better than a lower one, but it also means more driving power is required. Mobile SOCs are being pushed to their limits because of this, and we all seen how shitty they are getting. Galaxy S7 has some of the best battery life on a smartphone today. HTC One M9 had a 1080p display and the battery was still shit. Even though the pixel density on iPhones are way worse than Flagship Android phones, their battery life is not that much better.

Pixel density is just a small factor when determining whether a display is good or not. Maximum and minimum brightness, contrast, color reproduction, response time, matrix, depth and the quality of the panel itself are just as, if not more important, than the number of pixels.
