I was wondering the same thing. Usually just graphic designers because of the good display. Everybody else just buys them for the status. There really is nothing better other than the aluminum body and better graphics. Most people shouldn't be paying that 500-800$ premium, but they like shitting on their friends with how "trendy" they are.
>>

> Most people shouldn't be paying that 500-800$ premium
Where do you get the number?

The most affordable ultrabook with a non joke resolution starts at 850€ here. Macbook or rMBP would be only 450 bucks more for more SSD space/or power, much better trackpad, battery life and not look like you stole it from a hobbo.
>>
Am I the only one who doesn't really like how this chick is the face of the whole "real you" trend? I'm all for encouraging women that they shouldn't strive to look like unrealistic photoshopped women plastered everywhere in the media, but this chick just doesn't do that. I honestly can't see how this woman is, in any way, "natural". The human body does not look like that. Anyone with an ass that fat and legs that thick have a belly, love handles, or SOMETHING as well, but this chick has a flat stomach with tight abs and no love handles or stretch marks whatsoever. Women do not look like this. At least with anorexic stick models, you can attain that unhealthy look by starving yourself and excessively working out (which is not good), but you will NEVER look like her no matter how much you hurt yourself unless you pay for plastic surgery, liposuction, and fat injections. If anything, her presentation in the media as the "real beautiful" is 10x worse than any stick figures we've previously been exposed to.
>>
>>53846109
Literally not shitting you. I know these prices because I got a computer today. At Costco I got an hour laptop with an i5, 8gb ram, 15inch, and 7 hour battery all for $480. Looking at macbook pros right now, one with an i5, 4gb ram, 13inch, and 7hour battery is $1099.

Trust me, I wish I was pulling numbers from my ass. It's disgusting the premium people pay for style.

1tb HDD in my new computer. I think 6th gen i5s in both
>>
>>53846383
Ah, you're comparing it to the shitty ass non Retina Pro. In that case $1099 is pretty much robbery indeed.

Retina MBP is on a whole other level with PCI SSDs and hi res screen. Also it's lighter.

And last but not least, 6th gen alone doesn't say enough, was it 15W or 28W chip?
>>
>>53846267

Let me guess

The screen and keyboard are shit and it lasts 2 hours on charge.
>>
It's really quiet, but I think that's because the one I use only has an SSD. My HP is loud as shit when it does CPU intensive stuff.
>>
>>53846267
>7 hour battery
Yeah right.
>>
>>53846541
I have no clue to be honest. I don't know that much about hardware. I just bought the cheapest laptop that wasn't a chrome book or ripoff Chinese craptop. I think I got a good deal. I've been using it for about 3 hours now and it seems pretty good. I don't even know how you'd notice the difference between a 15W and 28W i5 anyway.
>>
>>53846580
Keyboard isn't great and 720p resolution is okay, not great. It says it lasts 7 hours on full charge, but I'm a bit skeptical it's THAT much.
>>
>>53846669

keyboard feels nice in its own way (feels better than 99% of laptop keyboards anyway, unless more than 1 in 100 laptops are Thinkpads)

use what you want, but Macbooks aren't used so heavily by the tech industry just because of "muh aesthetic"

they ARE used by 99.9% of consumers because they're a status symbol/perceived as the best you can buy

if you buy or don't buy hardware based on how it is perceived by other people, you are a jackass
>>
>>53846688
>>53846731
Indeed. Staring at a 720p 15" screen (guessing 1366x768) makes one feel like a bricklayer because the pixels are so fucking huge.

I've never really cared about display. As long as it's not completely disgusting and noticeable. I'm fine with it. When I look at it closely, I see what you're saying, but it doesn't bother me. I bought what I needed, and no more, so I'm satisfied.
>>
>>53846914
Suit yourself. I tried getting by on a $500 15" 1336 shittop once a couple years ago and to me the screen was near unusable. Barely tolerable for web surfing and 4chins and utterly useless for any kind of complex work (code, photoshop).
>>
>>53846914

I get by just fine with my T420; but I do see the appeal of macbooks & I think they are good machines.

But there's no doubt the bitter poorfag NEETs of /g/ will hate on macbooks despite having decent specs for the price
>>
>>53845468
To pay >80 bucks if your charging cable breaks, like it happened to my sister.
>>
>>53847365
I don't *need* a high resolution screen to write code - I could write code on my 1280x800 12" Dell Vostro if I had to - but a high resolution display certainly makes coding more pleasant. With a higher resolution I can more easily drop the font size, allowing for more code on screen, fit editors for two source files at once, keep documentation open alongside an editor, etc etc. All these things reduce the amount of alt-tabbing and scrolling and have a tangible effect on productivity.

Literally the only problem you guys have with macbooks is the price, LOL

Cheaping out on power adapters for ANY laptop, even the /g/-beloved Thinkpaddles, is a really really bad idea. Look it up, people have cracked open third-party manufactured power adapters and inspected their construction; they're all bottom-grade houseburner shit. You get what you pay for.

>>
>>53845468
OSX combines the best of windows (a working desktop environment out of the box and commercial support) with the best of linux (a unix-style command line). There also isn't a middle man between you and apple, unlike buying a windows laptop pre-loaded with bloatware. The retina screens are nice and the aluminum case feels very solid.

Yes and no, one should be careful with them but third party chargers don't automatically mean house fires, slower charging and all of that shit. Gotta read reviews and do your research, anon.

Each to his own, I'd rather pay a little more and buy first-party and take good care of it so I don't have to buy more. Electricity and lithium ion batteries are not things to be trifled with.

Yosemite and El Cap are a little less stable than Linux (assuming a proper distro/installation).

10.6-10.9 was easily as stable or better.

I wish Apple would tighten up their software QC a bit, back to where it was under Jobs, and take the enterprise server market seriously. With Windows going off the rails spying on every fucking bit that transverses the CPU Apple could clean house.
