If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Showing off the red clitoris, OP?
>>
>>53830656
That's awesome. I was considering the P40 yoga but I wanted more power and durability. I didn't even opt for the touch screen because not only did it exceed my budget but it's a completely unnecessary feature I don't need. It lowers the brightness by almost 30 nits, introduces a slew of fingerprints to muh beautiful IPS panel and just isn't that novel. I have a yoga 11 tablet that the charger blew out on and the touch wasn't all that crazy for me at all even for 8.1.

Speaking of which. The charger on my yoga 11 tablet is the same as the charger on my incoming P50. Would it be unwise to try to charge my yoga to see if it still works? The little yellow rectangle from inside the port comes out. I have both the old charger and the yoga obviously. I'd love to see if it works but I don't want to ruin my new charger. I'm not an electricity guy so I don't know what the risk is of the port is damaged.

What are you trying to get? The P50 and the P50s are just about the same size. The difference is battery life and power. You get a hell of a lot more computer going with the P50 over the 5510. The aesthetics may not be the same but that's a lot of extra beef for 150$ less.

>>
>>53832636
Holyhell, they did start it on theworkstation 510 series, which is odd. While some don't ocnsider a T420 a real thinkpad because 16:9, I do because it's a durable ass laptop with a 7 row keyboard.

It depends on user prefrence, if 16:9 is a deal breaker for you, and you like the old school aspect ratio, get a t410, but if you don't mind going widescreen, the T420 is a winner, sandy bridge is awesome, and it's the same durable design as a T410.

Question about the P50 I ordered. There is an activation key on the back/battery compartment right? How many times can it be used? I want to use a clean Win 10 Home ISO from USB to install windows on an SSD and wipe the hard drive the laptop comes with.

All of the wholly free as in freedom distributions suck balls dude. I use Arch but even that isn't close to free as in freedom.
>>
>>53834344
I use Debian on my laptop and I do not install any non free software. I use arch on my desktop and the only nonfree programs I use are nvidia drivers and games.

Personally I keep nonfree software to a minimum. A free as in freedom system does not need to stop you from installing nonfree software, you just have to choose not to install nonfree software.
>>
>>53834395
I don't want to nor have the option to install free software. Almost all of the software required for college must be done using the official software. The only thing I can probably get away with it libre office or something.

Besides, while I support free software, most alternatives to nonfree software are quite frankly garbage. Some have no free alternatives at all. Like Netflix. How am I suppose to Netflix and chill a bunch of college sloot's with no Netflix? Even if I made that exception, then I'm limited to Google chrome beta as it's the only supported way to view Netflix on Linux.

I could go on and on but unfortunately there's not a lot of good, functional software that does what I require to be done

thanks, I just bought a T420 for my daughter and really dont want to end up breaking anything hardware or case related. I guess I was more worried about case desu. I know the mobo is in there deep. both my T420's have been refurb. the screws I always need most are a ta dbit stripped. annoying. that also gets to me.
>>
>>53834534
Yeah. On two separate installations of Arch it was fairly easy to set up but both had their own unique problems. Poor resolution, transparent controls, full screen issues etc.. Other than that it worked pretty good.

Works better on Windows though. Don't worry, anon. I'll embrace Linux again after college when I can afford to(figuratively, of course).
>>
>>53834566
I dual boot now. I was doing netflix on linux till I tried the windows app and noticed how much better it was plus less resources. may sound odd
>>
>>53834474
I personally don't use netflix, because I don't like heavily compressed video, I don't like DRM, and if I want to take the time to watch something, I like to have a copy downloaded. I do get your point though. Personally I have not run across any classes that make me use user subjugating software.

The installer does some type of challenge-response auth with the board to check if it has a legit license, if then it gets the key from the mobo, otherwise it asks you to enter a retail key(since OEMs won't work).
Windows 7 required a xrm-ms certificate in the OEM ISO and a SLP key to process the ACPI SLIC tables containing the license.

you'd be buying one with a battery, but they usually come with 6 cell batteries, and they're old, used batteries. the 9 cell is the extended battery, and a new one will have much higher capacity than a used one

Can you install a quad core cpu in the t420?

Pic related is the flavours the t420 comes with. No quad core cpu contained.
>>
>>53839538
Lenovo likes to offer the T420 with chips it knows wont get too hot, the same way my Dell desktop supports a quad core, but was never offered with one. I myself wouldn't install anything more than a dual core in a little 14 incher for heat and battery reasons, but it can be done.

You can, but it isnt recommended because of temp issues like >>53839610 said. To be honest, a dual core i5 is good enough for most usages, and the i7-2620m is a bit better then the i5-5200u that was in every mid level laptop with a broadwell.

its either the LCD-inverter or the board itself.

Try to get some load on the cpu, if the whining is gone you could turn off the low power states in the BIOS

Blogpost time:
Just upgraded from an X300 to an X301. Managed to get one of the 1.6GHz ones for $50, but it didn't come with a drive, battery, or RAM.
Used the drive from the X300 so I didn't have to reinstall my Ganoo plus Linucks.
Borrowed some RAM from my W510.
Did some transplanting of parts so I could have my freshly-replaced palmrest of my X300 but with the multitouch pad of the X301 (not that I'd ever use it, but some bugs with the old one meant I had to leave it disabled 24/7, which annoyed other people who used the machine on occasion).
Power usage is way better, going from 8w to 5.5w on min backlight+idle. With new batteries I could probably hit 8h of light usage.

Worst part was the BIOS mod to unblock my wifi card, since there wasn't an ISO for the hacked bios, so I had to install wangblows just for the BIOS flasher.

Is lenovo known for being ridiculously slow on shipments? The product said 5-7 days to ship 1-3 days to arrive. I ordered on Friday and it says it's not expect to ship until the 13th. That's 9 business days, 13 business days total. Says it's not suppose to arrive until the 20th.

The flashing process is simple as long as you have a guide and the right tools. Here is the guide I used:

I'm looking for a work laptop, simple enough but with at least 4 GB of RAM. I'll be using Oracle Virtual Box and creating word documents.

I found this and would really like to hear a second opinion if its a good buy. Or if youse have other ideas. Thanks in advanced.

What would you give to have this laptop in this condition? This thing is freaking sweet.

Why the fuck does YouTube default to VP9 when only Skylake and a few others can hardware decode it?
All this time YouTube was draining my battery like crazy and I didn't know it.
Download h264fy extension and enjoy your extra battery life

Yoooo guys, about to buy a laptop for university work and stuff so I can take it with me places, and I've decided on getting a thinkpad. Been doing lots of research on them etc. but I have a couple of questions:

1) I've been looking at these two, and can't decide between them:

I know the T420 is heavily recommended, but the spec increase (4GB to 8GB RAM, and especially the 160 to 240GB SSD) seems nice. Also I know the older model keyboards are nice but the chiclet keyboard is meant to be just as good, if not better, right? (plus it still has the old trackpad/trackpoint design. Advice?

2) Everything about the older thinkpads gets me hard, but I've heard that the screens are shite. How much a factor should this be? I won't mind too much for doing any programming or essays etc., but I'll likely also want to watch netflix and stuff. Are they really as bad as some people say?

Cheers

I'm thinking of buying the Lenovo Thinkpad X220. I'm putting Debian on it instead of Arch, because I'm too lazy to setup all of Arch again after doing it to my desktop. Also I want to put in the Extended Battery into it for extended time. What I'm asking. Is this laptop customizable in any other way that is not the ram slot? I don't care for the graphics, because I'll be running it on Linux. And the I7 version seems better, but it has that weird swivel thingy. Also is this a good deal?
