Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I was hoping to get a tablet computer with stylus and came up on a $54 total HP Elitebook 2740p. Just needs basic stuff like a HDD, HDD cover, power supply, etc.

It's kinda nice that it is an i5 as well rather than a Core Duo for the price.

Good deal?

So is your /g/uys opinion of Lubuntu on a T420?

I just installed it after trying out Manjaro for a month on it. It was a pretty nice go, but my familiarity with debian and ubuntu flavors had me install Lubuntu (was running Kubuntu). Though, if I ever get around to getting a new battery for my Asus 1015PEM eeepc, I'll very likely install Manjaro on it.

So I just traded a first generation ipad mini for a t400, problem is the hdd only has 20 gigs after installing windows 10, should I replace the hard drive or just get a external? I was thinking of keeping most of my shit on a sd card and the rest in a external but I'd rather had a bigger hard drive and eventually a external.

I could've sworn the 745s were SFF, maybe they come in two types. I would go and check what I have again, but they're burried under boxes and other shit.

>>53799925
I've had that one for years, and yeah it's incredibly useful.

I wish I had a sort of hub, that I could connect 3 or 4 different hard drives to. I don't mean a NAS, I mean something hot swappable with the same agility.

My dock does have e-sata on the back, maybe such a thing exists.

My Helix is developing new problems on top of problems it had from when I got it, but at one point I opened up the computer so I could do a makeshift repair on the audio jack since it got a crack from the computer falling a short distance and landing audio-connection first.

So is my warranty still valid?

By the way, I made sure that I didn't open it too wide, because I noticed there were things that would disconnect if I did so, which possibly could have been things for telling if the computer had been opened previously.

256gb ssd is mart buy. 128s are 40 bucks in most cases, but the 256 is just 20 dollars more. I recommend the Arc 100, from OCZ. Decent read/write, good IOPS, and MLC.

What's a good laptop for video editing? Things like a good screen, dGPU and portability/battery life are pretty important to me.
W520/30 have the power but are too bulky to carry around and have shit battery, W550s looks like a good in-between. Latitudes seem to have the best screens but I can't find one with a decent dGPU

ThinkPad design was due to Richard Sapper, it's a timeless design that hasn't really been fucked with. Even today it holds up.

The Panasonic is clearly the design of Japanese engineers - functional, but not as timeless as ThinkPad.

The only other manufacturer who has stayed relatively consistent with their design is Apple, and even then, it's only since 2008 with the unibody Macs.

So 73% capacity is the best you can expect which, assuming 1hr per cell should net you slightly over 4hr, give or take.

So if you're at 36% now and have a little over an hour left, that's close to par.

An hour per cell is a slight overestimate.

Seriously though, I did this same exact thing and you'll never look back.

I had a decent computer two years back-- i7, 560GTX. Played videogames like crazy, and it got in the way of school and social events and so on.

Then my brother asked if he could use my videocard for some rainbow tables, and with quitting video games in mind, I gave it to him. Sold the rest of the machine, and programming, exercise, and friends took up the void.

Make sure that you have something that you can really dig into, though. You'll regret it if you find yourself replacing gaming with shitposting.

Is there any technical harm in swapping the actual drives in the main bay and the UltraBay?

Thanks man. I've been sitting here stairing at your post thinking i'm in the exact same situation. Gayming getting in the way of life, in general. I've enjoyed gayming so far, but i feel like it's taking way too much time from my life.

I'll really have to concider buying a laptop to satisfy my "IT needs", and to block me from constant gayming. So, to keep on the topic:

What thinkpad would someone recommend to replace my desktop PC? budget is high, can go as high as 600$, but prefer to keep it low. Would like the option of using a dock to keep using my dual monitor setup & mechanical keyboard & my favourite mouse.

By what logic? You're running your OS on the SSD, right? The only upside the Ultrabay has over the main bay is that it's hotswappable, and you wouldn't be able to use that if you had your OS drive in there.

Snagged this just now, /g/uys. Used the corporate code you guys offered in the OP. I'm hoping it will make me happier than the T560 would have. The 6200U/DDR3/HD520 bugged the hell out of me. Now I've got a 6700HQ, 8GB DDR4 and a quadro dGPU. Also got extended accidental damage protection just in case.

Yeah I got cucked into buying an expensive new machine but that's okay. I needed some extra power in a super portable package.
>>
>>53814873
I was thinking more that the main bay has that hard drive protection thing, but that's completely useless with an SSD since they're resistant to shock for the most part

T420 here, just got mine today and everything works fine w/ openSUSE 42.1.

Literally just took the Samsung mSATA SSD and 4GB stick of RAM out of my Ideapad Yoga 11S and put it in my ThinkPad. I was surprised at how painless the process was.

My reason for going from an 'ultrabook' to the T420 was because of the durability, simplicity, and the ability to swap out parts with ease. Nice keyboard is just an added bonus.

Got mine for $200 off of newegg, would highly recommend to anyone who's looking for a T420. Came in good condition. They put some sort of textured black decal over the lid (to presumably cover up scratches or protect it), but it looks nice and matches the laptop so I don't see any reason to take it off.

Here's the link for anyone interested:

Not too many latitude fags in the thread, I am one though and that's a pretty good deal.

RAM is cheap and I'd be shocked if you actually had to pay that much for a 9 cell. I was looking at some on ebay for 26 bucks the other day.

You should research and see if you can't stick an msata drive into the wwan port, my e6440 allows you to use the wwan port as a bootable ssd.

Also you should check to see if it's eDP or LVDS, because if it's eDP you can definitely get a 1080p screen for it. My e6440 has a eDP and this 1080p IPS panel is godly.

Then again, it was only the later versions of the e6440 that had eDP, so yours having ivy bridge in it, it's unlikely it has eDP, but you can find out by researching part numbers.

Cheers, welcome to the latitude club,

Is there a not-shitty way to install a modded BIOS on a linux-running Thinkpad?
I just upgraded from an X300 to an X301, but it didn't come with a primary drive, and I'd rather not have to image+install windows+restore my drive.
I tried WinToUSB, but the resulting OS is slow as hell and doesn't even let me log in.
The modded BIOS doesn't have an ISO version available. Does it work to take the official BIOS ISO and swap the ROM with the modded one?

Just because I feel like talking about it, I had all Latitudes when I worked at a particular company a few years ago. We had all Dell workstations for the stationary folks and the field guys like me had laptops. I had a D810 which was outstanding for its time. 16:10 high res screen looked great and had great contrast and brightness. It was very capable and took everything I threw at it. Eventually it got relegated to my personal laptop when the docking port died and I ran it as my "server" for a year or so. It was my first foray into linux and ran Mint 13 beautifully. To this day it's still doing duty as my father in law's (lubuntu) HTPC for low-res shit I download for him.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've been a Thinkpad owner for the over a decade but I think it's time to make a switch-- these laptops aren't the same anymore and my X200's performance is getting in the way of work.

Looking forward to giving Dell a shot. Hopefully with the trackpoint and keyboard I'll feel right at home.

With regards to display upgrading, I've looked into it and the best I can do is a WXGA++ TN display (1600x900), for exactly the reason you stated: LVDS.

That's definitely the most disappointig part of this transition. I was hoping I could score a 1080p IPS display with my next laptop, but the timing and pricing made me put that aside. It's going to suck to have to deal with the 1366x768 res. until I snag a better display off ebay, though. :\

Still, an i5, 16gb ram, ssd, it's going to be nice to join the modern computing world again.

>>
>>53819066
Yeah, I'd really like to do the same with my T420.
And possibly a 16:10 or 3:2 display.
But ain't gonna have one.
>>
>>53819066
T60 has similarly thin bezels and it can be loaded with up to a penryn core 2 duo and a 1600x1200 IPS screen. Best you can do short of the crazy custom motherboards the chinks make.
>>
>>53819192
I bet if I found a 14 inch tablet with a 4:3 ratio screen I could fit it in the top part alone. But that'd still leave us with figuring out how to get the keyboard and ports to work
>>

And just put a fucking huge battery in the bottom part.
>>
>>53803820

>>
>>53819033
You'll get used to the 900p screen. Get a good one and it'll be alright.

Just distract yourself with all the cool shit you can do with your modular bay, like an extra 3 cell battery or hard drive. Ordered two Modular hdd odd cadys for maximum backup portibility.

Also sweet fuckin christ, you can easily upgrade the cpu to a 3720qm for about 150 and double your performance. That's desktop replacement tier cpu power.

Sadly, it looks like your WWAN slot cannot double as an mSATA port, I was just reading on the dell forums about it, guess that was an option they added starting with the **40 series, I've got a friend with a 5520 that has the same problem.

Oh well, with the modular bay, you can carry extra hard drives and swap them out as needed. Just get a 500gb ssd for the main sata bay or something.

That's a real shame, one of the neat features I have on my e6440 is RAID0 option between the mSATA bay and the HDD bay itself, where you could put an mSATA to 2.5" sata adapter, and RAID the two together for 1GB/s read/write speeds. (The e6440 owners thread on tech inferno has detailed information on how to do this, so I am pretty sure it's possible.)

Yes, it's actually very nice for scrolling thru webpages. It makes way more sense than the scroll section on a square pad.

Also, thin cast magnesium feels and acts a lot like painted ABS plastic. You can tell the difference by disinfecting the surface and licking it. Mg tastes like metal. Plastic tastes like despair.
>>
>>53819301
you're making me wish i shelled out the extra $100-$200 for an E6440. :(

That's pretty sweet about the 3720qm, I'm not going to do it right away but that could help me sqeeze a couple more years out of it. Good to know.

I'm reading on notebookreview forums that people used non-dell displays in the 6420 and that the 6430 can do the same, so I'm hopeful that I'll find a decent-enough display for cheap.
>>
>>53819314
That's fuckin awesome, rollin like a cop.
>>
>>53819341
Well if that e6430 is returnable, it might be worth it, alternatively, you could throw some spare parts into it when you get it and just resell it.

As for the display, Yes, that's one thing Dell is good about I'm finding, is interchangeability on their generic parts, like screens.

130 bucks for an e6430 isn't bad. I guess you'd have to really be honest with yourself about how important the feature difference is. Before using it, I really didn't think I'd care about the 1080p screen but jesus was I wrong.

I dunno man, it's definitely a project top, but if you really think you'd be happier, return it and shell out the extra dosh. I think it's worth it, but that's me.

The CPU upgrade path on the e6440 is a little trickier due to thermal headroom, and the "Cheaper" quad core i7's don't have essential shit like vt-d. But I have a desktop if I need perofrmance, maybe you don't, so the easier/cheaper upgrade path on the CPU socket might be worth it, enough at least, in exchange for having no mSATA and a 900p screen.

It's all relative. I did a lot of research before I bought the e6440 and I still felt a little impulsive when I bought it.

Laptobs r hard :DDDDDDD

what would be the best way to utilize a thinkpad advanced dock? I found one at a recycler, but I haven't been able to get it to work
>>
>>53820430
Utilizing as in
>getting that broken thing to work
or as in
>actually finding some use for the e-waste I dragged home
?

If the first:
Check the hardware manual for it, and take it apart, to see if something obvious is broken.

if the second:
Well, at first, you need the matching thinkpad for it. Not every TP fits every dock, and there are also differences between the generations.
If that is covered, the classic use case would be to leave the dock at your desk at work, with your large monitor(s) and all kinds of periphery plugged into the dock (mouse, kb, printer, external HDD's, speakers, USB-controlled dildo, coffee heater…), so that you can easily add and remove your thinkpad that's controlling all of that, without having to unplug dozends of cables.

The advantage is that i can just pop off the laptop instead of unplugging everything if i want to watch a movie in bed (though i dont have a second charger yet). I have a dock for my X201 and its fucking nice, extra USB ports, CD Drive plus a VGA so I can get a dual monitor setup going.
>>
>>53802469
For video editing you need good CPU, GPU, monitor. Laptops are the worst place to searching for it.

Indeed, no set area for this laptop so I'll probably pass on it. Got my PC build anyways for demanding gaming etc.. Laptop is for watching movies and chilling. Cheers lad :)

Thanks, I'll look out for that.

quad core i7-3630qm is as fast as the i5-2500k, and it's still older than 3 years already.
You can get an eGPU instead of dGPU. This gives you the freedom of disconnecting GPU and having a very mobile machine.

UPS and priority USPS have always been decent to me. Fedex and standard USPS, you might as well just burn a pile of money instead because you're never fucking getting the shit you ordered.
>>
>>53824171
You don't making this easy. I'm not telling it's impossible, I'm telling this is very problematic.
>>
>>53824246
How is it problematic?
You want to seriously gaym - you connect eGPU.
You want to light gaym (cs:go or some shit) - you use iGPU
You want to go out to school/whatever - you disconnect eGPU and you go out

It's so simple.

Any comments on the T460s yet?

>want to buy a t420 mobo with the dgpu just so i can run 3 external monitors
I'm close to doubling the price i spent on the laptop on accessories and upgrades...

>why couldn't I buy the upgrade to pro?
The standard upgrade procedure will be more expensive than paying those extra $30.
Manufacturers like Lenovo use OEM activation, which requires some licensing info in the board's EEPROM.
If you check the parts list for most thinkpads, you'll see that windows 10 home and pro have different boards(and different FRUs). This is because those boards have different licensing data that is used by the OS to validate the license.
Also, 10 pro boards include license tables for windows 7, so you can downgrade easily(using recovery discs from lelnovo, which they send for free during the warranty period)

10 pro allows you to defer major upgrades(the most important feature for some people), to use bitlocker(useless for me) and it can be configured as a remote desktop host.

Don't forget to buy the new heatsink+fan and a 90W power adapter
>>
>>53824286
You want to do serious gaming or video editing - you use a desktop with big monitor.
You want to go mobile - you take laptop.
It's simplified even more

>EVO
The pro costs a little more but it lasts longer than the evo.
>>
>>53824463
I understand the differences. I don't use bitlocker. Group policy changes would be nice to have. And updates aren't super important for me. Fuck the botnet worrying I have college to worry about.

Now I understand that most manufacturers use OEM distributions of Windows that I know now the EEPROM is used to identify better. But how does this stop me or cause me issues when using a legitimate copy of Windows 10 Pro if I wanted or needed it down the line? I'm sure Home is more than enough for what I need but I'd just like to understand this a little better. No worries if it's a bitch to explain I don't care -that- much.

Yeah. Looks like it isnt worth selling my igpu mobo though unfortunately. I'm going to put in my 2620m and 8gb of ram and create a near top spec dankpad.

>>53824490
I spent maybe $8 on the ssd because i got amazon credit for my birthday (There arent any 850 pro msata drives on there.)

lol
you can ask about that fucker in 4 years or so, we are still at the *20 generation ;^)

that said:
I'll probably get a last gen X1C for $900 next week. Then I'll finally be the guy on /g/ with the newest and most expensive thinkpad. Finally, I will be someone!

Check the archive. Some anon purported to have done a fair amount of research and concluded the R7 240 is the best GPU for the advanced dock that still fits (and just barely).
