When did you stop falling for the GUI meme?

When did you stop falling for the GUI meme?
>>
Literally what is the point of not using GUI?
>>
i grew up and finally realized that Mac OS X was for real work, and the nectar of true gentlemen

all of my Office 2016 apps work fine on it, and i can post on all of my favorite charity sites. even my wife's son uses it for educating materials.
>>
>>53810781
When I started using vim and i3. After that I got rid of gui as much as I could, and tried to go mouse free as possible
>>
>>53810781
when i installed gentoo and couldnt get x to work

hahahahahahahah, Oh WOW!
>>

In my case it was the other way around. I resisted GUI for years but during the last decade I ended up switching over. It does feel like a bad habit (like using a car instead of a bike, or worse) but what can you do... GUIs are everywhere now.
>>
>>53810803
usually doing the same action faster and without having to even look at the screen much. GUIs often take up video memory and make a program run slower, or limit your options. Sometimes you even have to stop and wait for animations or slowly scroll down long lists using the mouse or the like.

When I got my laptop and found it easier to use just the keyboard than trying to move the mouse everywhere and click.

Choose one.

Only shortly before I stopped falling for the CLI meme.

When did you get diagnosed?

When I realized Normies used consumer-friendly products. I decided to become patrician.

String oP = "faggot";

while(oP.equals("faggot")){
System.out.println("Op Is A Faggot");
}

Dropping GUI is becoming more and more tempting with all these fucking horrible design concepts geared towards tablets and touch interfaces being rolled out to desktop applications.

Gigantic buttons, lack of keyboard shortcuts, swipe mechanics, all this shit is getting nauseating and it completely obliterates my workflow.

Use OSX when it's the best thing for the job,
use Windows when it's the best thing for the job,
use Linux when it's the best thing for the job,
use a GUI when it's the best thing for the job,
use the terminal when it's the best thing for the job,
use a text editor when it's the best thing for the job,
use an IDE when it's the best thing for the job,
etc.
>>
>>53812050
>>
>>53812008
start using better applications then.
I primarily use gui applications because they make things easier.
If a text application does the same thing just as easy, I use that.
Visual feedback is really good for a lot of things.
Eg changing the color of something by a color dialog or selecting between options using a dropdown.
It makes sense in a lot of situations.
>>
>>53812360
There are TUI that have drop downs.

Mined is the best text editor of all time.

OF ALL TIME

I still GUI, but with a (by modern standards) low res laptop (1024x768) I can get a lot more information on the screen at once, as well as use far less resources. A virtual desktop with urxvt and a multiplexor running a music player, email client, text editor, and whatever minor program I need uses less of my minimal resources than just a single one of those applications in a GUI.
>>
>>53810781
I'll stop using a GUI when I can fill out captchas and use the 4chan catalog in w3m. Also it would be nice if there was a terminal multiplexor that would still allow me to view images using the framebuffer.

Threads are more fun

import java.util.*;
import java.lang.*;
import java.io.*;

/* Name of the class has to be "Main" only if the class is public. */
class Ideone implements Runnable
{
@Override
public void run(){
String oP = "faggot";

while(oP.equals("faggot")){
System.out.println("Op Is A Faggot");
try{
Thread.sleep(1500);
}catch(Exception e){
System.out.println("OP IS STILL A FAG");
}
System.out.println("OP IS A HUGE FAG!");
}
}
public static void main (String[] args) throws java.lang.Exception
{
Ideone ideone = new Ideone();
// your code goes here
Thread t = new Thread(ideone);

This there is no point to not having a gui for 99.9% of users.

If you are working on some embeded chip maybe.

Otherwise any machine you have wont even notice the fucking difference.

Does the code tag not work on 4chan+?

import java.util.*;
import java.lang.*;
import java.io.*;

/* Name of the class has to be "Main" only if the class is public. */
class Ideone implements Runnable
{
@Override
public void run(){
String oP = "faggot";

while(oP.equals("faggot")){
System.out.println("Op Is A Faggot");
try{
Thread.sleep(1500);
}catch(Exception e){
System.out.println("OP IS STILL A FAG");
}
System.out.println("OP IS A HUGE FAG!");
}
}
public static void main (String[] args) throws java.lang.Exception
{
Ideone ideone = new Ideone();
// your code goes here
Thread t = new Thread(ideone);

A while back, noticed that CLI is much better and easier, surprised myself too, like a wizard with the command line.

This pretty much. Only pure command line can be considered not gui
>>
Is there a WM that's basically like a stacking i3? I love the shortcuts, but tiling everything is a bad meme
>>
>>53814660
Which shortcuts do you want? You can set up your own with a lot of WMs (Openbox for example).
>>
>>53814660
i3 has floating windows too.
>>
>>53814739
Mostly I like the meta+D menu and the whole idea of being able to stack the window tiles with meta+shift+arrow shortcuts, but I'd like to do it within a stacking context (kinda like Win7 handles it, but more thoroughly)
>>53814852
Yes it does, but it's highly limited in functionality compared to a regular stacking WM.
>>
>>53810781
That is a GUI though. You are just running it in text mode.

when doing repetitive tasks.

and for most things using the command line is not much harder then using the gui, and it can be faster when you get used to it.
