More importantly, it represents Microsoft's refreshing stance on open-source development. VP Terry Myerson teased "more coming soon" in regards to other possibilities signaling a modernized and extremely open Windows 10. This blog post by Microsoft's Scott Hanselman offers a deeper explanation of the move. "This is brilliant for developers that use a diverse set of tools like me," he said. "This is a genuine Ubuntu image on top of Windows with all the Linux tools I use."
But wait just a second. Things like grep, ssh, apt, etc etc, these are GNU tools, aren't the developed along with the GPL? How the fuck will such a copyright heavy OS such as Windows get away with integrating such tools into their system?

old news

that doesn't answer my question of how GPL/GNU tools can just be "integrated" into a system like Windows without lawsuits. What happened?
Oh yeah. Doesn't the GPL require other programs using it to be free™️?
>>53807273
Nope, just the gpl-licenced code has to be free.

Derivative works also have to be.
how in the holy fuck do i enable this?
>>53807424
do you know what the word derivative means?
I can apt-get install firefox now without using internet explorer?

I don't think you understand the GPL. There have been ports of GPL software for Windows for ages. What matters is that the source code must remain GPL'd and be available.
Microsoft did not modify the source code of GNU tools, they did not even compile it themselves as they are Linux ELF binary files. What they did is reimplement Linux syscalls on Windows so the Ubuntu binaries run natively.
