Xiaomi Mi Note Pro is currently the best phone.
Nexus or Moto for the best experience. I've used a Moto X first and second gen and they were pretty good. Moto X Pure should be good too. I'm on a 6P now and it's good too, latest version of Android with minimal bloat.
Only thing I miss from the Moto is the "moto display" which is like Android's Ambient Display but waaaay better at activating when you want it.

There are "good known" brands of chinese phones like Huwwei, Xiaomi and Oppo.
