Why not multiboot?
You can install os/distro as many as you want without messing too much.

I have windows 10, ubuntu 16.04, parrotsec, remix os and bbqlinux.

If you're new to Linux, I'd recommend Ubuntu.
It will take some getting used to, but it's quite comfortable.

If it's your first Linux install, I'd day you should go with Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian or Linux Mint. Sure, experienced Linux users bash on these distros a lot because they're considered "noob" distros, but I think they're pretty stable and intuitive if you used Windows until now.
Once you get used to these distros you can start comparing and really choose which distro is the best for you.
If you're not sure if you want to install a certain distro, you should consider Virtual Machines.

I just use Mint Cinnamon because I am a lazy fuck and just need a proper linux environment as Cygwin and MSYS2 are fucking awful. Maybe that will change with this Bash on Windows shit but who knows.

I don't give a fuck about ricing, I just need a proper terminal with gcc and all the gnu tools. plus mint gives me an LTS base which I have found to be rock solid.

you use what works best for you not what looks cool but sucks up days of your life to get working right.
