On the flip side, this huge surveillance will easily motivate competent programmers to either strip all the online services from the official driver software or to immediately start working on an open-source driver like in the Linux ecosystem.
If that doesn't happen, we can all jump ship to the Vive. Even more so when Valve releases Half-Life to as a SteamOS / SteamVR exclusive. Won't that be a shitshow.
