Just convinced me why not to.
Assuming it costs $300 for the equipment to properly charge a laptop, then at 15 cents a kilowatt it would take you more charges than the life of the laptop to break even. Also the carbon footprint would be higher going solar.

the ROI for solar panels is many years and the money you eventually save is not significant. If you want to do it for independence from the grid, ok.

I'm planning on buying a big battery bank and a small panel soon. I'll probably never really use it, but being able to use my lappy in case of widespread power outages is a real possible problem in tornado alley.

It's nice if the power goes out, but it's too bulky to carry around something big enough to power a laptop. Plus to get batteries small and light enough would be really cost inefficient.
