Just so happens that ping and network traffic capacity aren't necessarily related at all. Think about your connection to the test server as if the virtual path was a pipe and the data was water. Your ping represents the delay between one side opening a valve and the other receiving the water. Your speed represents the volume of water per second the other side can receive. If you have a very long but wide pipe, you get your situation.

speed and ping are not related. speed is bandwidth or amount of data (bits/bytes per second) and ping is how far/long the signal has to travel.

You both are correct in that ping is not speed, but ping can affect speed in several ways. For one thing, ping affects the amount of time it takes to establish a TCP connection. If you are downloading a small file (say 2KB of CSS for a website), with a 150ms ping, you'll spend significantly longer establishing the connection than actually downloading. Also if you drop any packets (and you almost always drop at least a small number of packets), ping affects how long it takes to request that a packet be resent and how long it takes to receive it, which affects your total throughput.
