Discussion: Is Android worth rooting at this point? Hostfile adblocking and ricing are the only things I use it for and with the new Nexus update release cycle it seems to almost not be worth rooting every time.

I do not root anymore. The only adblocking I ever did was for YouTube and I now have YouTube Red.
Just isn't necessary for me personally anymore, at least not on this phone. If I ever go back to a Samsung I might root, but LG's skin, what little i see of it, really isn't that invasive.

I used CyanogenMod 7.1 on an old Optimus V and now CyanogenMod 13 on my Zenfone 2 and they've both been as good as or better than stock.

I'm not that guy, but I can give you some tips.
The first thing most people do is install a custom launcher, with Nova being the most common.
After that you want to find a wallpaper and icon pack that match each other.
(icon packs can be found on the play store)
You should also either find a widget or make your own for the clock, date, weather, etc.
The best widget app is kwgt.
If you really want to do something with lots of animations though, you should use klwp. That's basically kwgt but it lets you create an interactive wallpaper instead of just a widget.

You'll need the pro version of klwp, so either buy it or use lucky patcher to get the full version.
Then you can just import that wallpaper in and use it.

You need to create a stack of icons and then put a clipping mask above it. Then set the animation to scroll on a global toggle, and create another icon that toggles that on touch.
Whenever he pressed the arrow the apps slide in.
Do the same thing with the music controls.

Custom roms are hella worth it for one main reason: SECURITY UPDATES. I can get my phone from 2011 up to March 1st 2016 on security updates while official ROM is stuck like 4 years in the past - a walking honeypot. My new phone from 2014 also stopped recieving updates and won't get Marshmallow, so I'll just keep it up to date with cyanogenmod and there we go. OTA upgrades even, what more could you want.

Total Launcher can do that. It's app drawer has a pretty decent smart sorting algorithm but it can be turned off. It also supports tagging and folders.

Not automatically, but with something like ssLauncher or Total Launcher you can place icons anywhere you want without being locked to a grid. It'd take a while but once you get it set up you wouldn't have to mess with it.
