There are a lot of people on /g/ who do not like SSDs. I installed a 500 Gb Samsung 850 EVO in my laptop and I am very happy with it ( its blazing fast). What I wanted to ask, /g/enlemen, is, what do you have against SSDs? Just asking, maybie there is something i do not know.
>inb4 shill or whaterver

A few years ago people complained about the short lifetime of the drives, but that has been mostly fixed now. Now it's just retards who bought a shitty kingston and complain about how slow SSDs in general are

OCD prevents some people from using it.

To give an analogy:
Most of us do not know when we are going to die, and don't want to know, because it gives us the illusion of living forever.
A HDD has a finite lifespan, but because it's non-deterministic, it gives the illusion that a HDD lasts forever.
An SSD has a finite and a deterministic lifespan, and that triggers some people, because it's like knowing when you're going to die.
>>

>>
>>53788411
which doesn't matter at all

if they really did beat HDDs at everything then those would be dead
>>
>>53788411
This isn't true for a few years now.
>>
>>53788290
My Intel X25-M still works like it did on its first day.
>>
I was very much against SSDs, still am. However I'm using one.

I fixed my neighbor's Wi-Fi (installed new APs, set them up to use roaming: he has a fucking big house). He then gave me two options: pay out in cash, or order something for me on Alternate (Dutch newegg). So I let him order an SSD for me.

Can't really complain, SSDs are nice. But they're overpriced little shits.
>>
>>53788467
bingo, I had this before I took the plunge (plus they used to be expensive as fuck)

but honestly an SSD now will last you 5+ years, and by the time it would die, you will have upgraded to something better, and larger capacity.
>>
>>53788244
They're good for laptops but /g/ morons want to replace regular drives with them, like it will last the same time.
>>
>>53788244
The fact that the drive will die is a certainty, built into it by the nature of flash memory. Some people don't like this type of design ie: preordained failure. Never mind that all machines fail eventually, you're not talking to rational people here.
>>
>>53788783
It will probably last most people 20 years but that won't stop the triggered emotion of knowing something's lifespan.
>>
>>53788411
Maybe, but they will both be obsolete before any of them dies.
>>
40GB of writes every day for 5 years (fairly standard rating) is more than enough for anyone outside of enterprise cloud or some shit. There are no cons to modern SSDs that I know of.
>>
>>53788816
True, the hdd will have slated away before the ssd has even worn down 20%.
>>
What the shit is all this about hard drives lasting longer than SSDs?

Two of my hard drives have 5 year warranties, which is to say I can expect them to fail anytime after that. My SSDs will last at least that long.

Wtf is anyone complaining about reliability for?
>>
Honestly I have a few problems with them.

Firstly I can't rationalise the performance increase. Yes, it's much better than HDD in terms of performance, but so what? A HDD performs good enough for any task that I use a PC for (I do not "game"). Since I would have to pay for the extra performance of the SSD, and that extra performance is effectively irrelevant, then I cannot see the point.

I also distrust SSD manufacturers. Flash drives are pushed to size limits because manufacturers use all sorts of shenanigans to push them to sizes that they shouldn't be. God knows what SSD manufacturers are up to.
>>
Only an idiot wouldn't like them. I use a 150gb mSATA SSD in addition to a 500GB spinnin disc in my laptop. Best of both worlds.
>>
In layman terms it is very simple.
Bigger the drive the longer it will last.
You can trust modern SSD used at home will never run out of writes, it's more likely to have 'other' technical faliure.

All the fad about SSD faliure is connected to older technology and smaller sizes.

You can trust modern ssd to survive 2000-5000 full write cycles. One write cycle for 500 GB drive is writing 500 GB on it. Which means life is linearly dependent on size.
500 * 2000 = 1 000 000 GB = 1 000 TB or 1PB.
I write about ~10 TB per year, which means my evo 840 would live 100 years minimum.

For old SSD with ~500 cycles and 64 GB size the same math doesn't look as good does it?
60 GB * 500 = 30 TB which is only 3 years for me! For others even less.
>>
>>53789127
>(I do not "game")

SSD is a waste for gaming.
I have the main OS/Win 10 and Virtual Machines on mine.

Video and Games on a HDD.

SSD is a must for OS drive, cannot go back.

I can buy an 850 Evo 500GB for the same price as a HyperX 3k 480GB

Should I still get the Evo, or is the deal on the HyperX worth it?
>>
Only downside to ssd it's the price, that year by year goes down.
For everyday use, even for professional workstations, SSD is the drive of choice, at premium price.
Short ssd life is nowadays is just a myth, technology matured and is no longer susceptible to this.
>>
>>53788290
My Kingston SMS200S has been serving me just fine.
>>
I only restart my computer about once every month and I rarely restart applications. There's really very little to benefit from. One day when their prices reach parity with HDDs per GB then I'll consider buying one.
>>
>>53788244
It's just third worlders with little to no cash that are against SSD's by their logic only second hand half decent standard hard disks are ok.
>>
>>53789238
Some games explicitly take advantage of SSD by use of texture streaming.
Others e.g. open world games contiously load and unload content SSD makes it no hiccup process... reducing detail popup rate significantly.
Every single game takes advantage of shorter load times typically 2-5 times faster using sata drive. Before I had SSD I thought of this as meaningless, but it really increases my 'quality of experience' when I wait so little for transitions and starting up games.
>>
>>53788877
Well, I bought it on sale at 110€, dunno what it costs where you live but I am very happy with it
>>
>mfw all these people ITT who have never used an ssd and buy the memes
>it's so much more than load times and boot times

HDDs are like two lane high ways for OS disks.

SSDs are like increasing to a 16 Lane high way.

Especially if you use Windows. There's so much shit going on under the hood, especially if you use an anti virus.

It's more than just the speed, it's the iops that are important.
>>
>>53789417
OP here
I bought mine on sale for 110€ to replace a dead HDD, and the computer is a lot faster overall (7 secs from pushing the button to ready-to-use desktop)
>>

Hell, even on Linux. My current setup with a full KDE 5 install boots to the fully loaded desktop in about two seconds (provided I type my password fast enough).

Admittedly, the old HDD doesn't get daily use like the SSDs do.

I've also purchased one for my laptop. Ofc speed is nice but the main improvement was in battery life. With hard drive my laptop could last for like 5-6 hours of average daily usage (wifi, office applications, browsing etc) and with ssd it lasts for 7-8 hours. This upgrade gave me more than 2 extra hours of battery life, pretty amazing.

>>
>>53788411
This is untrue.

SSDs last longer, with more I/O, and are less likely to fail than a HDD.

The ONLY downside to a SSD now is that a failure is a 100% failure - but you should have been making a backup anyway.
>>
>>53791732
>100% failure
I'm prepared to bet that FBI has a different opinion about that...
>>
>>53789035
a failure on the logic board is pretty much a 100% loss of all data and is unrecoverable.

But, you make regular backups - so no worries there.
>>
>>53789127
7200rpm Sata WD Black - Cold boot to desktop in ~40 seconds

SSD Sata, Samsung Evo - cold boot to desktop in 10 seconds.

Here's the kicker, even after windows is loaded, with the HDD, services are still starting, and the whole PC is still pegged for resources for a minute or so.

SSD, its all fucking up, complete, done. You log on, and you immediately open your browser, or video, or outlook, - and the shit just opens up like it was merely minimized. There's no loading shit from a spinning HDD.

Building new servers now, i'm actually inclined to put some industrail grade SSD drives over 10k SAS drives, and they cost about the same.
>>
>>53791762
The FBI can surface scan HDD platters that are cracked in half.

Maybe they recover data, maybe, but you fucking encrypted it anyway.
>>
>>53791857

>>
>>53792034
m.2 SSDs are choice.

Too expensive for me, after seeing them in person, the performance didn't justify the price over a SATA SSD.

But, yes, holy fuck the m.2s
>>
there were legit complains about SSD's back in the day but they are no longer legit.

when the warrantee oon your SSD lasts 5 years you no longer have lifespan/reliability issues

in fact SSD's (good ones) are better in every single way to HDD's except for one which is cost/ammount of storage and that is quickly changing eventually even SSD's will be cheaper

HDD is obsolete tech and should only be used for mass cheap storage or for specific applications any normal user should be running an SSD

Sure they show signs before failing completely from all the sound and heat they emit. However, they report errors far before that i.e. S.M.A.R.T.

SSDs are also capable of that. I guess normies should install the manufacturer's software which monitors the ssd for such things. Some ssds show absolutely no sign and have their monitoring programs report that everything is a-ok before faling all of a sudden without any forewarning or chance of repair. Those are Samsung SSDs. It's related to the firmware and software though and samsung is notorious for fucking shit up software wise.
