You're delusional if you think these updates are actually adding anything. Even my GTX 780 doesn't get performance updates any more. They released a new driver that improved Rise of the Tomb Raider performance quite a bit for 900 series cards recently, which did fuck all for anything before that. Updating the driver on anything but their newest product line is a pure placebo.
The only thing they deserve minor credit for is actually making these cards work on newer versions of Windows at all. There was no official Windows 8 driver for my old 4870 and the final Windows 7 driver was buggy as shit when force-installed.
Somewhat related to the op: am I the only one hoping that his coming generation(pascal/polaris) will usher in a second era of single-slot powerhouses like the 8800GT/X1950 Pro? I really miss those.

The updates do nothing for you. They just push them out with no changes to those cards and sometimes even making them worse (though to be fair, that's rare and probably not intentional with these old cards.
The only cards that benefit are dual-GPU cards like the GTX 295 and 9800 GX2, which gets SLI profile updates for new games unlike the 4870x2 and the like which just ceased to be supported.

Kepler cards are shit. Downgraded from a Titan X to a 780Ti.
My Firefox causes random driver crashes, I cannot play Minecraft without OpenGL crash every 5 minutes, ME3MP works but sometimes has 10 second blackscreens.
I would have a 290X without Gsync. Best deal for a cheap card right now.
