I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Ubuntu, is in fact, Ubuntu/Windows, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Ubuntu plus Windows. Ubuntu is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning Windows system made useful by the NT kernel, system libraries and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by Microsoft.

Many computer users run a modified version of the Windows system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of Windows which is widely used today is often called Ubuntu, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the Windows system, developed by Microsoft.

Not that any of the consumer tech retards here will read this, but this isn't some sort of weird Ubuntu clone on Windows. It's just going to be command line tools that are standard for software development, like make, autotools, etc., because right now using cross-platform libraries on Windows is a nightmare and most people end up using MinGW or Cygwin (which both provide the same sort of tools for Windows).

I'm excited by this.

Compatibility across platforms is a good thing.

FOSS reached out to Windows with the Mono project and many great pushes to link features between the platforms.

Microsoft reached back and said, "Okay, let's do this." and pumped money into Mono, Xamarin, etc.

Whatever happens, as a developer, I win.
>>
>>53766635

What cygwin does is kind of a hack (converting normal POSIX/linux calls to WinAPI ones, where possible) and not really performant as it build ontop of the existing API to the kernel. If now MS would implement the interface to the kernel directly, cygwin and its inherent dependency on the cygwin.dll would be unnecessary and porting Linux software much easier.
>>
>>53766673
Except you can't EEE GPL software, you kike
>>
>>53766755
cygwin.dll IS the interface to the kernel directly

If Microsoft implements a system that gives you source-level compatibility, it will be a .dll just like cygwin - translating linux calls to windows calls.

>>53766774
You can. You open source GPL parts and do not link them to the reas of your software, using IPC instead.

cygwin for the most part uses the win32 API not the native API.

native API = functions exported by ntdll. completely undocumented and you're not supposed to call these.
win32 = exported by pretty much anything else, ie user32.dll... usually calls ntdll instead of interfacing with the kernel directly

Bad. Microsoft is doing this to destroy it in some way, they have never been nice, not even fucking once. They want Linux and open source as a concept dead, as evident by their Halloween documents and they're clearly using their "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish" methodology on Ubuntu right now by embracing it, extending their Cygwin clone and extinguishing Linux as a viable option since "Windows already has all that".

Never trust them, they are all about what they can destroy next to make their marketshare even bigger and force businesses and private individuals over to their broken mess. There's absolutely no form of "love" involved, only business.

How can they destroy free/open source code? The only way I can think of is by taking it and making it work better and providing better services - making it so much better people would sacrifice freedom (freedom as set out by Stallman, not actual freedom of choice I the real world) and money to use.

That isn't bad, it's competition.

lol. Linux cucks never learn.

Microsoft is going to use them for all they're worth, then kick them out and rape what's left like they always do.

Microsoft doesn't partner with anybody. They just steal and sabotage legally.

Don't hype this shit up before we see any real results.

This is actually pretty neat I've always wanted to have bash and unix tools on Winblows without Cygwin or a virtual machine.

But it's open source Microsoft can easily just take all the code and fork out their own project.

They couldn't kill Linux with FUD and the usual bullshit, so now they've conceded defeat to its existence. The only thing they can do now with the whole other OS is what they've always done:

>EMBRACE
>EXTEND
>EXTINGUISH

Never change, Microshit. Never change.

Ubuntu always were traitors sellouts with dishonest SJW motivations as a form of openwashing. Ubuntu is linux for niggers.

Theo de Raadt was right, linux users hate Microsoft more than they like linux. Stay true to your colors lincucks.

I wonder if this has anything to do with android apps running on Win 10.
The next logical step is everyone running ChromeOS apps in Chrome on Windows on Linux

You realize it's more GNU/Windows though?
Nothing Linux is getting ported, the linux kernel isn't what running, it's the GNU utils that are now running because windows is translating the syscalls it expects to windows ones.

>or are they just neglecting the GPL

GPL is toothless. I've stolen GPL protected code and used it in my proprietary applications many times. What, you think I'm afraid of Richard fucking Stallman?
>>
>>53772378
Ok sorry that's Nicholas Goroff
>>
>>53772536
Your code is worthless, while Microsoft's code better conforms to GPL. Microsoft is the main "enemy" of the Free Software Foundation, I'm sure they'd be willing to go to court with this.
>>
>>53772536
>I've stolen GPL protected code and used it in my proprietary applications many times.
That's because your proprietary applications have little to no value in the real world.

It would be like suing some chinese fuck who hand-solders shitty USB cables in his toolshed for not using RoHS compliant lead-free solder. With such little impact, noone will bother.

GPL is not toothless. FSF maintains an army of lawyers.
Hell, they've won a case against Cisco, which is basically US govt extended into a commercial corp.
>>
>>53765809
They are doing reverse Wine, building a Linux "emulator". Linux system calls can be implemented by different closed code.
>>
>>53765606
It's the Jew emoticon, right? Can someone explain that emoticon to me?
>>
>>53772672
MS has a definite upper hand in this.

They can use all the linux libraries they want because they're foss as long as they comply with the licenses.

Wine doesn't have such freedom since all windows libraries are closed
>>
>>53772696
it doesn't even matter if it's FOSS or not. Canonical is working with them to do it. It's like if MS worked with WINE devs to make it work. They're bringing in Ubuntu libs specifically.
>>
>>53772696
Linux libraries are already available and can be readily used on the emulator, Ubuntu is providing them as FOSS. They just need to reimplement kernel calls.
>>
>>53772636
>>53772650
One of my apps has over 500k downloads on the Play Store, and has earned me a nice comfortable living. It's littered with GPL code. I love FOSS software, makes my job soooo much easier. :^)

>>
>>53768538
You're partially right. Maybe microsoft's telemetry showed that a big chunk of developers abandoned windows because of telemetry, so it's "making it convenient" to use ubuntu without removing the underlying botnet.
>>
>>53772774
The Chinese fuck who hand-solders shitty USB cables in his toolshed also sells a lot of those shitty USB cables mang.
>>
>>53765230
There is. Lookup GPU passthrough. You can run your hardware directly into a Windows virtual machine with only like a .4% hit to performance.
