I switched from GNOME 2.0 to XFCE a few years ago.
XFCE has become prety good.
Worst part about it tumblerd , this shit crashes often and eats resources like there is no tomorrow.

Gnome here. Terrible defaults but really nice after fifteen to twenty minutes of customisation. Just make sure to trawl through gnome-tweak-tool and extensions.gnome.org.
Using stock Ubuntu MATE. Gets the job done and only a few infuriating bugs mostly related to unsuppirted GPU drivers.
