Those don't come close, they're about the size of the 7" and early model 9" Asus EEE laptops (I know because I looked into those before settling on a used EEE). Due to not having to worry about the touchpad and having smaller hinges you'd almost be able to fit 2 Jornadas side by side in the same space.

Cray knew how to make a camera friendly computer. I wanted to be able to take a nap on the Cray X-MP bench. Their competitor, The Connection Machine, upped the ante by slapping on a blinking light panel that displayed certain memory registers. It wasn't really useful for much but looked sexy as hell.

I forget which company it was from, but our lab at college had a massively parallel computer donated to it. The thing was a pain in the ass to program but if you were able to truly split your task up to use all the processors simultaneously, it would really fly.

While searching for the name of the computer, I discovered that Goodyear, of tire and blimp fame, actually made a supercomputer.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodyear_MPP

Seems like an odd thing for them to get involved in but I guess it makes sense in that they had an aerospace division at the time.
>>
>>53762794
Checked the wikipedia page. It states that each LED was connected to an individual processor and would be lit only if that processor was performing a task. There might be some degree of debugging value in that.

The issue with this is that it's still a computer with a keyboard attached and there will still be wires to the power and monitor. For me it's not worth throwing away the modularity of having a sperate keyboard and mouse because that computer keyboard is still going to take up space with an external monitor and power adaptor.

If it has a battery and the ability to wirelessly cast it's display though...

Not really sure what the definition of a UMPC is, but if you want something smaller, you might want to look into the successor to the Openpandora.

Personally I don't want something so small that I have to thumb type; modern smartphones are pretty good at that and you can get an Ubuntu chroot or something if you want traditional software.

Applies to most software nowadays. It becomes more bloated as computer hardware technology improves.
>>
>>53775226
I miss the days when this was how normal people accessed the internet.
I wish it could have stopped the JavaScript bloat, other assorted YouTube bloat, and stopped Tablets taking off.

Alas.
>>
>>53776785
Stay mad chink.
>>
>>53782484
I wouldn't hate on tablets if I were you. Smartphones and tablets are still relatively underpowered compared to desktops/laptops and are the one place where Javascript heavy crap runs like a sick half-frozen dog. It's basically tantamount to suicide for a company to make a somewhat functional phone/tablet app with web tech because the user experience for it will be abysmal.

In other words, if companies want a presence on these devices they're going to have to write their apps in real fucking programing languages (C, C++, Objective-C on iOS and Java/Kotlin on Android) and hire people who are competent in said languages. These people often write or contribute to desktop software on the side/as a hobby. In short, the mobile consumer industry is largely responsible for keeping real honest to goodness native application development afloat.

Sure, they've got a dedicated app - but log onto their site and they'll pester to you to try it.
I'd say they should fix up their sites instead of making apps, but I know you should be careful what you wish for. Some of the biggest abominations in website design stem from designs oriented towards smartphones. (You want to smoothly scroll down the page? No, you're going to scroll [vertical screen resolution] at a time!)

>hire people who are competent in said languages.
I'm not going to pretend I know what I'm talking about when it comes to programming, but a lot of the mobile software I've seen surely can't be competently programmed, and a lot of mobile stuff has even worse time-wise problems than desktop software.
(Namely something that could run on an iPod Touch 2G having minimum requirements of an iPhone 6s or something, or something that could run on a 2G if made competently struggling on a 4.)

I'd resent phones/tablets a lot less if they never did away with physical buttons. Might actually like them and see them as a valid replacement for netbooks, even.
>>
>>53762055
it is possible to run linux on that?
>>
>>53782660
Different strokes and all that but these days I find myself *wanting* to use the web/a browser for less and less these days. If there were native desktop apps for things like Netflix, for instance, I'd jump for those in a heartbeat. Shit that complex doesn't belong in what should be a networked document viewer.

>>53782660
>Namely something that could run on an iPod Touch 2G having minimum requirements of an iPhone 6s or something
99.999999999999% of the time this happens because mobile OS developer SDKs/APIs have changed so dramatically over the years that supporting an app on OSes several versions old AND modern OSes is extremely difficult, and it gets even harder if you want to take advantage of functionality found exclusively in the latest version. It's not like the desktop OS world where things have been stable and relatively unchanged for decades.

Wicked awesome device, but too slow, and too poor battery life compared to modern options.

Touch screen emulated mouse input at the hardware level so it worked with pretty much everything unless you wanted gestures.

I had an X60T for a bit, that thing was adorable, cheap, and reasonable like the T60. The hinge however went flaccid and has to be replaced and I didn't want to bother with it anymore.
>>
>>53787300
The hinge on the Thinkpad Tablets has always made me feel uneasy.
With just one thing holding the whole screen on I get very worried it'll fall off, even though it feels reasonably sturdy. Plus it would never align just right at the base (i.e. the screen would be perfectly horizontal, but the base would be slightly off centre) which bothered me.

I want to stop focusing on making laptops tiny and thin. It needs to be at least thick enough to have an rj45 port in it. Also the lid should be hinged on the top, not the middle. Makes it thicker, but opens better.

Also want to see modularity in laptops more.

The thing I want the most is having hot swappable batteries. This can accomplished easily by having a tiny internal battery that might only last for like 45 seconds on its own and then you have your normal external battery that you can pop in and out.

CrOS is just regular GNU with Freon (I think) in place of X and CrAS instead of ALSA/PukeAudio.

On basically every Chromebook in the past few years you can wipe CrOS if you want and do 100% GNU/Linux. Or chroot for real software (which is what I do, because lazy).
