I have siterips from most VR porn sites.

I play the video on my phone, which is in VR goggles my wife wears.

I mirror the screen, streaming it to a tablet which I prop up next to her.

In this way I can copy the sensations she sees on screen by performing the same acts in real life.

Immersiveness feelz good.

Have a full 7 monitor display to handle huge workflow and data charts, yet fit in a medium size suitcase with my semi mobile desktop.

Seriously some of the flowcharts I want to build won't work on normal screens because of sizing limitations. I need more screen space!

If I could fly around in infinite 3D space with a 3d mouse I could get so much more work done while waiting at the airport.

Also play some nice movies ever now and then

I don't need one, but if someone makes a good way to manage 3d flowcharts with this then I might just get one.

smartphones have pretty damn good DPI, i imagine it wont be that long before VR screens get sufficiently high DPI to make it possible.

besides, we already have many games where combat takes place at those distances and beyond.
>>
>>53760910
No i'm saying just having screens 5cm from your eyes must do something over a prolonged period of time.
>>
>>53760994
it's not like your focus is 5cm from the screen because it tricks your brain with depth so it's not like sitting 5cm from your PC monitor or TV.
>>
A near perfect VR is something with high dpi screen that "surrounds" the entire field of view of an eye, can detect the location and orientation of pupil for adjusting depth of field, and probably some sensor that helps to adjust dof when looking far or near. Are these things possible?
>>
>>53760956
>we already have many games where combat takes place at those distances and beyond.
I don't know if you've noticed, but it's significantly harder to spot people at those longer distances in those games than it is in real life, which leads to developers putting in features like the eyenoculars in ARMA. I've been waiting for 4k monitors to come down in price for a while now because at that point they'd actually be getting somewhat close to the limit of what the human eye could see (think I measured for the location of my monitor vs where I sit and it would reach the normal limit at 6k). It's going to be a long time before GPUs get good enough to power VR with two 4k screens at 90+ FPS (I think it's been estimated currently that you'd probably need the processing power equivalent to about 6 GTX 980TIs to be able to do that), maybe in the early 2020s.

Have you ever fired a rifle with just iron sights before? If you have you'd know that no game comes close to a realistic depiction of it due to monitors simply not being capable of a high enough resolution. In real life I can take one of my rifles and shoot 12" steel plates at about 450 yards, in a video game that would appear as just one or two pixels with a normal 1920x1080 monitor and would be extremely hard to see and shoot.

because they dont release any harmful radiation, and a VR screen is just a small version of those.

>Definitely. That's why you won't look at the sun for long. You can literally go blind from looking at a solar eclipse for long
i didnt mean looking straight at the sun.
just looking at the sky when the sun is out would blast your eye with more radiation of different types than a screen at 5cm from your eyes.

and heat radiation is not harmful.

>I didn't know there were lenses before the screen.

Yes, there's lenses. They make it so your eyes can focus at 3 to infinity meters, depending on the model, so your eyes can be completely rested and focus on the screen.

How does focus work? I mean, in the real world we get depth cues by having to focus on near/distant objects.

VR can't simulate that, right? So it's like everything is painted on a sphere of constant depth around you?
>>
>>53762992
We get our depth perception from the difference between the image in each eye aka stereoscopy. VR provides a different camera angle to each eye to produce the same effect
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereoscopy
>>
>>53763334
No no you misunderstand. I mean in terms of the focal length.

Let me demonstrate with an example: Suppose you're trying to play a VR shooter, where you're holding a gun up to your vision.

In reality, you can't focus on the front sights, the rear sights and the target at the same time. Two of the three will always be blurry.

VR can't simulate this, can it? So you can't have a VR gun simulator that feels even remotely realistic, due to the fact that in VR, everything is in focus at once.

Won't it feel unnatural?
>>
>>53763393
that's true. I don't think it will be that big of a deal
>>
>>53763465
Idk, I think the brain is pretty damn good at picking up subtle errors and hints like these.

I mean technically it's basically like the current generation of 3D glasses (the type you get when watching “3D” movies), except now with head tracking and a wider FoV.

So whatever depth information is missing from the current stereoscopic 3D goggles will also be missing from VR

It isn't that much of a problem since your eyes only really focus on a tiny center point of your vision anyways, you don't notice what's outside that area with or without depth.

I tried the Vive late February and I haven't been able to play regular games since then. It just feels so dull now.

Pic related: I cleared out the perfect space to use my Vive.
>>
Oh boy, you guys will be so fucking disappointed when you realize that VR barely moved on and that some asshats are just trying to hype the same shit over and over again.
>>
>>53765508
You DO notice, and it's probably the one problem many people have with VR and fatigue. The scenario you put your eyes in is completely unnatural: Your eyes move like there actually is depth in what you are seeing. Your accommodation on the other hand is only focussing on one plane the whole time. The two reflexes usually work together closely, so what you will be experiencing is eye strain, which most people who are not insane tech enthusiast complain about. Also rules out VR for children.
>>
>>53765612

Pretty sure infinity focus solves this problem. As your eyes register the scene being far away in terms of light coming in meaning they won't try to refocus.

I'm not saying you're wrong though, just saying it's pretty new and I haven't heard eyestrain complaints from anything other than badly set IPD's yet. But that may still come.
>>
>>53763393
It's a bit of a shit, your eyes think they're moving to a closer object so they refocus, but then they realise they've overshot and go back to how they where, which confuses your brain.
It's one of the smaller issues in VR.
>>
>>53765715
>As your eyes register the scene being far away in terms of light coming in meaning they won't try to refocus.
When the stereoscopic tells your eyes that the thing in front of you is much closer and they need to refocus, then your eyes focus to something close, and everything goes fucking blurry, then you're fucked.

A solution I read to this was multiple layered transparent LCD's, but I don't know how well that's going.

Also, someone said animal simulator. It could simulate the better hearing and probably reduced colors that an animal sees. Also their ability to see in very dim light.

it can, there's a guy at nvidia who did a research project where he solves this
the downside is you lose lots of spacial resolution, so we'd need to wait for much higher resolution displays before that will be viable

his project also makes headsets small, too, his lens is really thin

What I want the most from VR is a passable AI-infused long term sim that runs at the same speed as reallife; Basically I want a ideal-real-life to hook myself up with it when I wake up (or the moment I get back from work) and disconnect only when I need to sleep.

I want to get married to someone who cares about me in it, I want to have my first son or daughter, with them in it. I want to see them grow up, get married, and be successful in life (perhaps even see my grandsons if I live long enough to reach that stage in the sim) I then want to grow old with my wife.

Just thinking about this cheers me up

Most people will tell you that there's something wrong with what you're saying. They'll tell you that it's less valuable because it's not real.

I don't think that's the case; life isn't fair and not everybody can have the same experiences. VR is the democratization of experiences.

They're not wrong you know. I'm confident in that using such technology in this manner would be classified at a minimum as a psychological disorder or hyperbolically 'slow suicide'. I'm equally confidant that some societies will seek to regulate it as drugs with access only granted exceptionally for "medical reasons".

But like you said, not everyone is living their lives normally. To them, the trade offs are worth it even if it destroys what little they have left.

It should be possible make it work with existing shooters easily enough. The fov will be all wrong and there will be no 3d effect, but you could totally do it. The game could possibly become somewhat out of sync with your movements, since I don't think as many guarantees are made with your typical mouselook game. Basically, axes could drift due to simplistic mouse measurements on the game's part.
