what does it mean /g/?
>>53746833
>storing your files on someone else' computer in current year
>>53746928
But what do they mean? When you sit in a meeting and they start talking about the cloud, what is it?
I think it's very handy and cool. Storing your data on the aether is a brilliant way to save space.
>>53747179
Just a buzzword for the internet.

>Still stores information on local sources and thinks his Open Sores Encryptini Al Gore Rhythms can expecto protecto him in 2016
>>53747310
But what is the cloud? The way people talk about it, they don't necessarily mean storage only
>>53747323
A cloud is basically a large network of servers that can be used interchangeably.
>he uses the cloud
>>53747323
>The Cloud
is a buzzword for anything "connected" or "networked" these days.
Your Yahoo/Google/Outlook email online? CLOUD EMAIL
Dropbox/Google Drive/Box.net? CLOUD STORAGE
Virtual Server Hosting instead of dedicated? CLOUD SERVER
Web Based Customer Relationship Management software? CLOUD CRM
Amazon Web Services? NAW NIGGA THATS BROAD & DEEP CORE CLOUD INFRASTRUCTURE SERVICES
Seriously. It's that simple. It just sounds so much more EPIC and GROWN-UP to call internet connected/internet hosted things CLOUD things instead of WEB or INTERNET.

tl;dr
the cloud is a marketting term to get investors exited about technology that has existed since the 90's
>>53747370
>trying to force some shitty meme
>>53747387
It hurts to live
It's like big data. Everyone talks about it but it's just another term for an older term
>>53747537
what is big data? When is big data big data?
I read somewhere that big data becomes big data when it becomes too big to process conventionally. But that's fucking relative
>>53747625
Big Data becomes "Big Data" when the company/group dealing with the Data can no longer process it conventionally, and they begin to require the help of additional software/hardware to process/move this data.
For Example:
You'd call your mother Big Data if she required a Rascal to get around, rather then her own legs. The company that rents her that Rascal, and gets to bill her insurance company for it. It becomes "Rascal As A Service" rather than "Software-As-A-Service" for most traditional "Big Data" management suites.
>>53747789
>>53746833
It's called the cloud because you can access it anywhere, but what's going to happen when it rains?
>uploads files onto someone elses hard drive
>dude clouds lmao
>work for cloud hosting company
>switch clients over to cloud storage
>user complain "why does it take 10 secs to save my spreadsheet, it used to be instant
>welcome to the cloud
It's just a scam. Cloud backups makes sense, storing your data offshore does not.
>>53749008
that's why you need cloud insurance
>>53749125
no, you work for a company that provides remote data storage facilities.

The only cloud worth a shit is IPFS.

You can choose what you host with IPFS, m8.

You'd not wrong, but you are a neckbeard.
Serious, it's just a bit of lingo... get over yourselves.
>>53747370

whats the meme?
>>53747789
So you're basically saying that fat people at wallmart in those carts are the cloud? That's an interesting theory.
When at wallmart next time spotting fat people, make sure to throw harddisks and usb sticks at them whilst screaming you're helping them by upgrading their cloud storage. Pls film and convert to webm for 4chinz pls.
>>53749256
He's not though
if it were just a marketting phrase and nothing more it wouldn't be a massive joke, but normies delude themselves into thinking the cloud is actually something inovative, new or magic. If it were something the sellers did it wouldn't be funny, but it is funny because the buyers are the ones that have tricked themselves.
I use cloud backup at work because my company has a server for just that.
But fuck putting my own files on somebody else's stuff. HDDs are cheap enough that I just do redundant local backups.
>>53746833
What you don't do any of pic related?
Get with the times gramps
'" VR '"
>>53749226
technically email is not necessarily cloud, it could very well be on a discrete server somewhere

Normies DO NOT belong on /g/.

At least I can try to keep it locked up.
Serious business now. Anyone have good info on hosting your own chrome/chromium sync stuff?
I found some script stuff to use and I have a freenas server already hosting owncloud and other shit.
Might even look at the more autistic versions of chromium that are supposedly more safe somehow.
I need to one good source about setting it up and proofing it so I can be mostly sure I am not being spied on.
>>53746833
Just gotta use it right. Some chink service with 1TB is decent for media backups, Google Photos is great for images, simply don't put any pics with your face on it. I think you can even store 1080p videos and stream them from it, perfect for muh anime. Also Google Drive and OneDrive are decent for smaller files, again, just make sure nothing personal is there. Think ebooks.
Obviously nobody sane would use them as only backup or put anything with personal information inside but why not having an extra one?
>>53750077
Christ autism everywhere. Also you need to look up the definition of the word lingo in the dictionary — it has nothing to do with marketing.
>He drives a car.
Hurr durr, it's not a car it's an automobile. Normies delude themselves into thinking it's something new and innovative.
It's lingo, it's the terminology of the present. Get over your fucking autism.
>>53750470
>not being a neet
Don't worry anon, your data is safe in the cloud ;)
You have access from it everywhere, because it's in the cloud ;)
Just trust us, you dumb fuck.

What did you mean by it?

Have you hung your chair yet anon?

>not having your own NAS
Oh i forgot, you guys have shitty expensive net speeds, unlucky
>>53747537
Big data is when you install spark and run your calculations over 1000+ nodes
>>53749125
> not caching the data on local disk and transferring over network in the background
Tbh you guys fucked up on that one
